DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Aquifer: how to get past it?
« on: March 29, 2014, 02:54:11 pm »
Well I managed the plug version after accidentally drowning one miner while trenching out the plug drop point...I guess that even with ramps up out of the wet trench, dwarves just aren't sensible enough to dig from the landward side...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Aquifer: how to get past it?
« on: March 29, 2014, 12:36:48 pm »
OK, I've started a fortress game in an area with a water table 2 levels down from the surface. How do I find a diggable path past it? Digging trenches obviously won't work, since if I dig a trench through a diggable area AND water filled area, the water will flow from one to the other, rendering my excavation useless. What is the usual method?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Mouse interactivity and large screens.
« on: March 20, 2014, 09:11:17 am »
When I increase the size of my window, the mouse stops working to designate areas anywhere outside the original size of the screen when it first pops up (the extreme upper lefthand corner) - I assume this is a bug? Is there any way to fix it so that the mouse will work in the entire screen?

Finally managed to get a guard schedule set up...what I did was set one squad (of my three starting squads) to guard "burrow 1" (which is the entry hall to my complex) at a time (rotating between the 3 squads, so each one guards the door every third month) and setting "Minimum" for that task to half the squad (which would, i presume, allow the other half of the squad to eat and sleep and drink while half of them are on duty?)
Nice, remember that at least half of them will be on duty, dwarves are a bit diligent, if you give them three pieces of food and some boozeskins(Really, who puts water in that?) then there will be aways 7-9 dwarves at the burrow.

Tough... 3 squads through 3 months each... 9 months? You have a entire season where the front door gets no guards?

I think you misread it...every third month, a squad will be on duty...so in a year, each squad will be on duty 4 months (Using human months, one squad would be on duty in January, April, July, October, one in February, May, August, November, and one in March, June, September, December.

Are barrels and bins permanent, or do the dwarves eat them? I've been pumping out barrels for about an hour now and for some reason, I STILL can't brew any drinks at my distillery...what gives?

If you want them to defend an area on a schedule, then you'll probably want to remove their previous "Train" order (or at least make sure it's on lower priority).

If you want them to defend an area right now, then you don't want to be in the military screen - press "s" to view the Squads list, select the squad you want to order (e.g. press "a" to select the first one), then press "m" (to order them to Move to a location), move the cursor over the area you want them to defend, and press Enter. When you want them to go back to what they were previously doing, cancel their Station order by selecting the squad (as above) and pressing "o".

OK, Here's another question: I can't figure out how to give orders to my military...I managed to set them up to train, but that's it...when I try to go into the schedule and change one squad to defend an area, I can't get the schedule to change from "Train" to "Defend" (or whatever that command is supposed to display) - it always says "Train" when I shift-Enter out to supposedly set the command.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What to do with bronze
« on: March 18, 2014, 05:03:50 pm »
Real Life bronze may hold a better edge than iron, but it is MUCH more fragile (which is why the "Bronze age" comes before the "Iron Age") - Iron weapons needed to be resharpened more often, but didn't break nearly as much, and of course led to steel weapons later on.

Well I made them out of gold...this is my first game, and for some reason, the area I'm working in has a crapton of gold, but I haven't found a single scrap of Iron yet (Assuming you can actually find Iron and don't somehow make it from something else)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Newbie questions I can't find in the FAQ

How do you place chests? my Mayor says he needs two, and I made some, but I don't see them under the build item lists..."Containers" apparently only includes bags and bins?

They should really make a way for the dwarves to drill a hole through the "Moist stone" to let a thin stream of water through, without having to make a channel all the way from the entrance to the well.

Yeah. Water needs to be underneath it or else the dwarves have nothing to drink. Try routing some water from a lake towards it.

EDIT: Hit "u" and then use the arrow keys for any dwarf. Then hit "c." After that use the + and - keys to go down to "Other" and hit enter. Hit enter again. Hit escape twice and boom, instant architect.

After 'c'. the + and - keys appear to do nothing, but there is a list of apparent "jobs" in which nothing can be selected...there does not appear to be any "Other" in the list, and no selection to hit "enter" on.

Example: I pick a Miner who's not doing anything at the moment...the list under 'c' for him is:
No Job (Yellow)
Dabbling Persuader
Dabbling Negotiator
Dabbling Judge of Intent
Dabbling Intimidator
Dabbling Conversationalist
Dabbling Comedian
Dabbling Flatterer
Dabbling Consoler
Dabbling Pacifier

That's it...no "other" and no apparent way to scroll in the list.

Aha! Figured it out...had it in General and I needed to go to Professions, then pick labor, THEN pick "other jobs" and so on....

OK, well is finally building...anything else I need to do with it like build someplace for the water to go at the other end of the channel?

(Edit) Hmn...maybe not. It's been a while and it's still a blueprint. Says "needs architecture" - how do I give dwarves skills without using a third party manager, so I can make one an architect?

Oh, right... You need to dig a hole on the ground my son, this is how wells work!

Don't see "Make hole" in the designate or construct menus...(Isn't the entire complex a "Hole in the ground?")

Maybe you give someone the profession and he died before finishing?

I don't even know how to give dwarves professions. Apparently there's some kind of third party software that lets you edit that, but I'm trying to get the hang of vanilla before messing around with third party hacks, thanks.

Well eventually, they DID make the blocks and mechanisms, but now I can't figure out how to make an underground well. The placement icon says it needs "Open space", which I have no idea how to create...

I can't get them to build a well at all...it says I need Blocks and mechanisms...I've had the mason shop assigned making blocks, and the machine shop assigned to make mechanisms, for about an hour of run time, but with dozens of dwarves running around, the workshops are sitting idle and making nothing...
