I like the idea of toys leading to skills. As far as the nursery idea you can already accomplish something pretty similar by making a burrow for just the children.

I think part of the awesomeness of Dwarf Fortress is that even if you manage to escape with an adamantine armor set, you can still die pretty much the first day you leave your fort (at least I could, because I'm nubcakes)

I don't really like the idea of choosing migrants, or rather having direct control or who shows up or if they show up. Part of establishing something like a fort is having people just showing up and expecting to be part of it. Maybe  you could give input to your outpost liason when they visit, in a fashion similar to choosing your imports. If you don't want migrants just build a wall and don't let them in.

If you want generic meat and leather, use one of the mods. Part of the fun of dwarf fortress is that it's so intricate. I care whether its giant rat leather or large rat leather for the same reason i care whether its mako shark or pond grabber leather. The devil is in the details

A true artifact engraving seems like it would have some issues. A better idea would be an artifact engraved slab! Its already a work of engraving, can have the same things on it as a normal engraving, and could be handled like any other artifact.

thats a great idea, because then in adventure mode you could hunt it down, haul it back to your house and have a piece of expensive art.

Regarding the graphic. I like the one on the right, and think it would be neat to see that kind of topography in the game, but you shouldn't be able to just paint your embark site. Dwarf Fortress is about surviving in a harsh and deadly world, not the world bending and shaping itself to compensate for the skill of the player.

Some races should have the option to open doors or grasp, if they would realistically be able to. I know people might not think it would be fun to fly around as a bird or or an elk or whatever, here's why I think it would be fun:

Sometimes I want to see what an old fort looks like without reclaiming it, if I'm a bird, I can fly to my fallen fortresses and see what state they're in, who's moved in, etc. For things like fish I think the whole underground rivers idea would first have to be implemented (and expanding on THAT idea, there should be 'pits' on the surface that cause some surface rivers to waterfall and continue underground) Certain things like monkeys, ravens, rats can steal items from people. It may sound silly, but just think you could also spawn as a goblin, or a mummy, maybe you'll raise the dead in your ziggurat, let them loose, and start a zombie apocalypse? I think there would be more to do than people would first think.

I like the artifact block idea, but also here's how you can remedy the indestructible artifacts thing, make the artifact quality engravings able to mined out. Artifacts cant be destroyed, but giant kea have made off with a few of mine, they aren't completely safe.

I think that there should be some preset options so if you want you can have an entirely desert/jungle/forest/whatever region. I've tried to do it by tweaking the settings but im nubkins and i just wind up getting an infinite rejection loop

I like that Idea. It would be so useful for pulling levers in emergencies, getting nobles out of harms way, etc.
