General Discussion / Re: Maybe the WWIII thread (soon) (Ukraine)
« on: March 05, 2022, 01:43:19 am »
I'm a Ukrainian, but not in the country. My mom is in touch with family members who are there. According to her, my Aunt and her son have evacuated to Romania (try to guess where the Uncle is), but my grand parents have chosen to remain in their city inside a bomb shelter. I'm sad to hear that bombs were dropped on their city.

Can't say I know much more than that though.

Also isn't this Russophobic backlash kinda a bit startling to anyone else?

.... this is reminding me of the burst of anti-Asian hate that cropped up at the beginning of the pandemic.

The Italy story is an example of how virtue signaling can wrap around and become racism again, but the liquor and hollywood story are both legit acts of protest by corporations (as legit as their pride-month flags are at least). The Vodka ban got a lot of laughs from the Ukrainians at the last protest I went to, the hilarity of it was a great morale boost, but when you stop treating it as a joke I guess it kind of sucks. I can't say I have much sympathy for an importer who uses hammer and sickle imagery in their marketing though. Those are like Swastikas to us.

Make no mistake, all of this is being done to avoid getting cancelled for "profiting off of Russia" and we all know how good cancel culture is at making actual positive change /s

As for the sanctions, we seem to be doing things differently this time. Rather than target the common people, we're aiming them directly at the Oligarch's ruling the country by seizing the assets they own outside of Russia. Who knows if it will work, but at least there's a chance for once. It's like pressuring America by placing sanctions on billionaires at Wall Street. Since they're the ones who actually run the country they might be more motivated to stop the president from running unnecessary wars.

Putin has more power than our president though so I can't say with confidence that he'll actually buckle to that pressure. Especially since a lot of Russia's economic future is riding on its ability to eliminate its rival (or its Oligarchs, but guess who they'll choose...).

It seems pretty clear that this war has very little support from normal Russians, what else is expected to happen?

And here you are wrong. Of course, normal Russians wanted a short victorious war, not THIS. But average Russian is an imperialist who views Ukraine as nothing but a breakaway territory that should be brought back.

+1!

Wut?! I don't even...

The more I learn about Kevin, the more confused I get. If Kevin wants to ruin the game for the sake of realism so much, why does he sometimes do random 180s. This reminds of the time when the Colonial Marines Space Station 13 server decided that the soldier class was too stupid to use basic health items because it was "more realistic".

Kind of weird that this tread disappeared for a bit, guess a war is more interesting than a disease.

To be fair, a lot of governments are starting to pretend that the pandemic is over. I’m going to University classes in person now, and I have to say, minus the mask mandates it doesn’t really feel like a pandemic anymore.

I’m sure the feeling will come back once the lockdowns resume.

And now it seems there's more economic threat to be had in the consequences of committing to an invasion, plus the potential for driving more countries to NATO and basically ensuring that if Ukraine survives this they'll likely get pushed firmly into the EU and NATO camps for good. Smart. :v

You gotta understand that Putin literally did this exact same thing in Georgia without any hitches. Sponsored some breakaway states and then commenced a full invasion. No one gave a shit back then.

It's kind of amazing that Putin failed to pull it off a second time. My people have been fighting hard, but their success is more on Russia's incompetence than it is on our troop's heroism. As horrible as it is to say, we have been incredibly lucky.

  • Ukraine is soft-sieging Crimea via water supply

Video might have addressed that more fully,

Nope, the video didn't. Says the people there are living on water rations. Though I'm not surprised to learn that Russia decided to prioritize agricultural exports over it's people *cough*.

How deep are you into the RPG maker horror fandom if I may ask? Dreaming Mary's one of the big classics so I'm surprised to hear that you haven't heard of it.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then boy are you in for a treat. There's a whole host of games like Dreaming Mary that you'll get to discover. I personally recommend Lilly's Well. Don't google it cause of spoilerific images, you can just download it for free on steam.

It's a good video, I saw it earlier. It really showcases how Russia basically is dying as a country, but the pedant in me has to correct your typo. The video states that Ukraine has a lot of newly discovered natural gas reserves, not oil. The war for oil logic still applies though.

My only complaint is that the guy adopts an aggressively neutral tone that almost seems to excuse Putin's actions. I don't care how much Russia "needs" these things, they have no right to subjugate an independent country to do so. What Russia needs the most is a government whose sole purpose isn't to siphon public funds to oligarch's. That will do the country way more good than a successful conquest.

EDIT:

I have officially changed my stance on this video. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that this is just an outsider reaching to come up with rational explanations for what is at it's core, an insane series of actions. The video's only merits are as a summary of Russia's economy and issues and of some of the recent conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, but for the latter, it is only touching the surface of it to the point of being misleading. You cannot talk about Russia vs Ukraine without mentioning the fact that the ousted president Yanukovich was a corrupt piece of crap (for even Ukrainian standards) who did not deserve his seat in the government. For fucks sakes, one of the first things he did when he gained power was to illegally jail the runner-up candidate who had loyally served as Ukraine's prime minister and was beloved by the people. Doesn't that sound like someone you know?

Just more proof that not everyone with a polished presentation is necessarily right.

Basically, Russia fears becoming Ukraine's bitch in the future.

I get the feeling they wouldn't have gone off half-cocked if they actually thought Ukraine was much of a threat, so I'd take this claim with a grain of salt.

Ukraine was seen as an economic threat to them, not a military threat. That's why they tried to solve this economic problem with an army.

With that footage example, you should remember that there is also a lot of fake footage out there which could inflate your number. I hear a chunk of footage was taken from previous wars.

A Bloodborne hunter is just a beast wearing human skin. That's why they're all destined to become one in the end.

I think DnD is a very appropriate system to model their badassery with. If you're playing as hunters, you're gonna get into theatrical fights. Play Call of Cuthulu if you want to RP wimpy scholars who run instead of fight.

A lot of Russians unfortunately still fall under the sway of Putin's propganda machine even after traveling beyond the border. If I had to count the amount of times one has told me in person that what Putin did to Ukraine in 2014 is a good thing...

I hope the bigotry hasn't been too harsh, but the sad truth is that an oppressed minority is going to feel a little jittery among their oppressors.

The singular of gloves and mittens is a glove or a mitten.

This logic applies to shoes and socks as well.

Pants and trousers are the only anomaly. There is no generalized distinction between top and bottom-half clothes.

Glasses is a always plural btw.

If there was some sort of arrangement with China that's been betrayed, Putin will likely reveal it once he goes down to make sure his backstabbing buddy doesn't escape with him.

Now that I think of it, there's a pretty good chance Putin might end up fleeing to China.

As a Ukrainian, I can safely tell you that unfortunately it is indeed a racist country. Most parts of Eastern Europe are actually (including Russia).

I'm not surprised by any of this border stuff. It's a country where there is no taboo against the N-word.

Looks like a big blast indeed.

Could have been a sufficiently large stockpile of munitions, ala the Halifax explosion.

When my ex messaged me out of the blue, I responded to her cause I didn’t see the harm in it, had a few boring conversations and then she disappeared again.

The desire that’s fuelling this conversation is fleeting and thus of little consequence. Do what you want with it. Just don’t get back together.

Of course I was the one who initiated the break-up in my relationship so I purged myself of lingering feelings long ago. You are not so lucky so try not to lose control of them. It’s only once in a blue moon that someone actually changes.
