DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Strange mood problem

3 forts in a row I've had a child get the strange mood. It has sufficiently pissed me off as now I have a legendary useless pile of trash.

There is a realistic (DF realistic) method of adamantine procesing here. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=109582.0
It's... rather graphic.

I did this on a whim, but I'll check it out.

(Sorry for not posting about insanity train, lost motivation after it corrupted :( )

He was promptly atomsmashed.

And this is the reason I always build a 2z level deep "Bridge" moat with no ramps (only staircases on the side.) To prevent accidental atom smashing.

Dear Urst McWeaponsmith

While I appreciate your demand for bones, and metal bars so you may complete your strange mood. I do however not like the fact, that you made one of the highest value items in the world. Meaning Spiked Balls.

But not only did you make a Iron spike ball, studded with horse bone. You highhandedly doubled the value of my fort. Next time, please make a proper weapon, that someone can bloody well hold onto.

Love, OS

Dear Urst McMigrant

While I do love seeing what I get during the first two waves of migrations, having 9 out of 14 migrants in two waves being children does not please me. What angers me even more, is the fact that I've already set my child cap to 10, so what the hell is wrong with you. Next wave of primary children gets sent to the caverns.

Love, OS

Kreydursts Research Tablet on Adamantine

So, it seems that the melting point of Adamantine is 25000 degrees Urst. Which compared to normal stone/building material, it's melting point is way above normal boiling points.

Another thing is that the boiling point of coke producing stones is ~16000 degrees Urst. Assuming that the coke/charcoal burns at that boiling point, (0 leftovers [of coke/charcoal] due to assumed Dwarven smelting/forging 100 Urst-cent efficiency) until it inevitably evaporates. Only smelters/forges made of dolomite can contain the raw power of explosively stupidly passive, non face-melting efficient coke/charcoal.

And let us not even get into the properties of Adamantine as an armor/weapon in general. (I.E. Blunt/shear strength and whatnot) as it is absolute bullshit makes even less sense how a single Urst can pull off strands of Adamantine from a craftsdwarfs workshop, without some kind of specialized equipment.

And through the process of stranding the Adamantine it somehow reduces the melting point of Adamantine just enough to make wafers? Which then can be turned into armor and weapons!? Impossible I say!

Our Dwarven workers must be hiding specialized tools from us, the things I list above might make sense to a few fellow overseers. So I will now begin listing the specialized tools I believe our minions workers hide form us.

  • Plasma torch Small dragon on a stick
  • Because of dragonfire being the ONLY natural heat source that can melt Adamantine, I have deduced that somewhere, somehow, hidden from our sights is a simple, yet innovative tool created behind our backs to properly melt the Adamantine strands into Adamantine wafers. I have deduced that this hidden tool, which is distributed to every Urst through some divine method (Likely Armok's doing,) is the only reason we can work the wondrous metal.
  • Ingenious in it's design, an adult dragon must have been killed to take it's scales and create leather straps. Which then hold in place a young (Baby practically) dragon, tied to a nether cap pole.
  • After a the tool used to create strands of Adamantine are used, the dragon on a stick is punched repeatedly until it's fire gathers. Which at that point, the stick will be pointed at the Adamantine strands settled in a magma-safe stone mold (for wafers.) Under normal dragonfire circumstances, a magma-safe stone mold would easily boil away in seconds, but due to the limited supply of the dragons breath, and the focusing array of the smelter and forges (Described in bullet point 2) the Adamantine receives 99 Urst-cent of the heat.
  • The same process (Meaning Adamantine being melted into molds) is used to create all things from Adamantine, I.E. Armor, weapons, furniture, and coins. During the life-inhibiting facemelting cooling phase of the Adamantine ~15000 <-> 24999 degrees Urst is when the quality of the hammering factors in.
  • Funnel Focusing Array
  • As with the previous special tool mentioned, this is another thing I theorize that is hidden from our view at all times. But this tool is odd in that it must be shaped like a cylinder (With a closing mechanism to prevent face destroying fire from blowing back through) made entirely of dragon leather, and dragon bone mechanisms / knobs (Or tower caps, that's another possibility) to allow the closing of one end of the tube. Which, as it's name states, it aids in focusing the dragons fire onto the Adamantine strands/wafers.

If you go for magma first its best to move everything underground, because at that point it would be safer and the surface wouldn't be able to provide anything the caverns couldn't.

I've decided to dig tons of ramps so that the trade caravan can get to the 2nd cavern. I'm evil, and await to see the destruction forgotten beasts do to the caravans.

Alright, I'll begin the fun and see how fast I get destroyed by a forgotten beast.

Now, feel free to berate and smash me as you please. But is doing an instant dig to cavern 3 for instant magma forts a semi reasonable idea? I'm starting to find the mass deforestation for my metal industry is quite insane (I keep getting unlucky, and can't see to find a place with coal.) While it does help me get into wars quickly with elves, I feel as if I've lost to many a wood cutter to ambushes resulting in the fort atom smashing enraged behavior due to production slowdowns.

In short, is it a good idea / semi safe to go to magma layer instant? (Yes, I know trade will be a pain until I get a track system done.)

Due to an unfortunate event, the files of this group have been corrupted.
Curse you Terry!  :'(

What will happen to the story after the winter writeup?

I'll likely ask for 6 more applicants. And continue the idea of what I'm doing. But I'll come up with some semi-satisfactory humorous way to end our tragic fort :( Next story should be tomorrow. I have some things I need to catch up on / write a ton of emails today before I can work on the >Arrival< section. Going a bit slower then anticipated but that's life for you.

Departed from Kikrost Kacoth

Kreydurst grumbles as they reach the end of the road. “Right, lets hope our supplies last till we get there.”
Khaziraad deciding to chime in as he picks up everything he can. “Worst comes to worst, we got plenty of rock-bug-shoe-beard makeshift ale.”
“That sounds more disgusting then hugging an elf.” Kreydurst would retort.
“Ain't nothing more disgusting than an elf, wot be wrong with ye Kreydurst?” Horkon shouts from the rear of the wagon
“Probably the fact that he has his arse handed to him by Khaziraad as he tried to escape the intense melee in that pub.” yd12k snorts a bit. “To be honest, none of us really fared well when Khaziraad decided to go on a rampage.”
Pumpa, being the fat noble he wants to be grunts, “I'm half surprised we didn't get some justice served to us.”
“That's because we ran like cowards! And how are you cowards going to face goblins if some justice is to much for us!?” Tunist bellows from the wagon, raising his trusty wooden spear.
“What do any of you know about justice!? I've been served justice for my entire life practically! Yellowpick ain't exactly a 'friendly' place just so you gits know.” Dailm would state with a rather downcast, and just cruddy tone.
“Right...” Kreydurst states as all conversations seemed to have halted.

-   -   -   -   -

At the front of the wagon, yd12k tugs on the reigns of the horses that pull the wagon. On the right face of the wagon, Tunist practices with his wooden spear. Making some quite agile movements, and a few epic displays of strength. Meanwhile Kreydurst and Horkon, at the left face of the wagon practice their sword and axe dwarfsmenship. Dailm, Pumpa, and Khaziraad seem to theorize about making a endless rumfall. Surely it won't end in a disaster like Pumpa's previous gran architectural feats.
For the most part, the groups seem to have formed within the group. Their relationships develop steadily as they begin to reach the embark point. Daily activities include attempting to brew random shit. Combat practice, medical checkups and bragging about their accomplishments. During the night, Kreydurst would dig out a small cave for them to sleep in, and hide the wagon in.
About a week away from the embark site, Pumpa declares himself the leader of the expedition. Everyone else seeming to not give a dam about who the leader is, just keep moving. Needless to say Pumpa's designs for the fort are grand, and Kreydurst nearly puts the sword to his throat because. “I'm not going to be digging that much, just for you to accidentally give someone the wrong order to pull the bloody lever!”

End of Departed from Kikrost Kacoth

Due to an unfortunate event, the files of this group have been corrupted. (Hard drive stuttered on me and chunks of the embark [and backup] are destroyed/overwritten) I'll finish writing the story up to the point of the 2nd winter. So, needless to say, I'm sorry for our loss.

The graphics packs made it hard for me to read some of the font, so I just got used to the default graphics. What graphics pack do you use, Casei? I'm really surprised that a 9 year old was able to pick up the game.
That would be the major problem with graphic sets. For the most part, I'd suggest ironhand for beginners. But I must say, that if they need a graphics pack to get into DF they're likely to quit sooner or later. I love the asc II but it just hurts my eyes to much, which is why I use ironhand.

Dear overseer.

While you might find it funny to sacrifice your lowly mason. The joke is on you, for I have created an artifact when you weren't looking. And as I have my last true breath, because my lungs are sure to be ripped out and reanimated into beings of their own stead. I will use it to laugh at you, for the wonders I might have produced is beyond your ELVEN mind!

Love, Urst-kun.

Dear Hauler Urst,

Just because there's spot unfilled in the stone stockpile, doesn't mean you have to go into the caverns to pick up the most dangerous rock when I'm not looking. And bring back three forgotten beasts which killed everyone but you, the brewmaster and my last swordsdwarf.

Yup, fixed now.Ty for pointing out. It would had been quite a face palm moment if somone only noticed this a few journals in when it was screwed up half a dozen times  :-[

Quite so, I'm almost done with the post-embark chapter. Soon I'll arrive at the arrival chapter and we can see the story unfold as I, the terrible overseer screw up.

Edit: Also there's one more or so Kikrost that's supposed to be Kreydurst in your journal.
