DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Economy questions
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:43:00 am »
About the haulers thing, i have 26 idle dwarves, and they all have hauling allowed for any objects.

As for the liaison dude, as soon as the baron was done drinking, they started to talk and that canceled the task "attend meeting" for my broker, who then proceeded to go trade.

Hopefully, he learned his lesson and got over himself, and figured out the liaison doesnt care about him and won't wait next yer for a bit of attention.

DF Gameplay Questions / Economy questions
« on: May 20, 2008, 07:50:00 am »
Hey everyone

I'm now discovering the economy gameplay, since until now, my computer couldnt handle high population forts.

Anyway, i'm trying to meet my nobles mandates and did a good job at it so far, built a bunch of shops and they seem to be running, since i find purchased crap in some rooms.

Onto the questions :

1) Why wont they use the coffers in their rooms? They all just let all the items they purchased on the floor and there's not one thing in their chests, what gives?

2) I produced plenty of barrels and bins, but now it seems they wont use them anymore.. They still haul stuff and dump stuff when they have to, but the barrels i made are abandonned in the forge/carpentry workshop despite the fact that my furniture stockpile is almost empty. I dont get it, and its pretty annoying because brewers now take much longer to brew booze since they have to run a marathon every time to get a barrel.

Prolly more questions to come soon   :)

Thanks for help

Edit : new question although it definitely looks more like a bug :

The Humans arrived, that is, the human diplomat arrived. No caravans whatsoever, i have no idea why. She met with the Baron and said stuff like : "geez what a lovely place you carved for yourselves" but no trade agreement was offered.

Now, the dwarven caravan showed up, and some goblins ambushers. I slaughtered them all, and the caravans entered the Depot and started unloading their goods. As usual, i asked dwarves to bring finished goods and pressed "r" so the trader would come.

But my trader, who is also hoardmaster, but not mayor anymore, seems to be stuck on "attend meeting" and won't come to the depot. It seems that the liaison guy doesnt want to talk to him, cuz he's waiting next to the Baron who's busy drinking.

Is that a known bug? Will my broker be able to get to the depot after the Baron talked with the liaison, and the liaison left?

Thanks for any enlightement.

The stomping doesnt enter into it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Lack of wood in Heavily Forested!

Hey everyone

I'm having a problem i never faced before : i'm lacking trees despite the fact that the zone i embarked on was heavily forested (all of it)

The thing is : there were indeed tons of trees when i arrived, but when i cut them down, they never grew back

I think its because the ground has been stomped so often by so many dwarven feet, it used to look like grass, now it all looks like black sand.

Anything i can do now or could do in a next game to prevent this?

Thanks for help

I think i read somewhere that if your marksdwarves have a shield, they'll be holding this in their hand instead of the practice bolts, which means they won't train.

Maybe they stopped because you gave them those shields?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Question

I dont think dwarves enjoy steam. What they enjoy is mist, as far as i know. So if there's a window, there shouldnt be any mist behind the window, and it wouldnt please the dwarves.

I'm still pretty sure you'll have to dump a whole lot of water on top of the magma if you dont want your obsidian to melt back into lava right away

I've never tried but my instinct tells me if the water is dumped in the middle of a big magma lake, the stone may turn into obsidian but it will melt right away.

If this was real physics, there would be three possibilities :

- with too little water, it would probably evaporate before it gets a chance to touch the magma
- with enough water, you would get an "equilibrium" (i just made the translation up so dont blame me) where obsidian melts down at the same speed as magma cools down into obsidian.
- with too much water, the whole magma pipe would end up solidifying.

Edit : and by the way, it's not so much about gravity than it is about density : it is very very likely that solidified stone from magma is less dense than liquid magma and thus, floats on top of it. If you've ever seen obsidian stone in real life, you've probably noticed that it is actually very porous, making it very light.

DF Gameplay Questions / Skeletal creatures
« on: May 18, 2008, 12:11:00 pm »
Hi

The wiki doesnt seem to have much info on the subject, so here i am asking for your knowledge :

Can skeletal creatures can be tamed if you manage to capture them in cage traps?

Can you then breed them like normal creatures if you happen to catch a male and a female?

Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do cave creatures respawn over time?
« on: May 18, 2008, 09:59:00 am »
Yo, i was spending the weekend at my gf's so i couldn't reply earlier, my apologies.

Anyway, i'm almost certain that i once had fire imps respawn. The map i started in had 4 fire imps at the start, and i killed them but not all 4 at once. If i remember correctly, they never respawned when there was still one of them alive, but when the last one got killed, i eventually had 4 new fire imps in the area.

I have no idea when this happened (i mean, what version i was playing) and i have no saved file to prove it, but i'm pretty sure it happened.

Fire imps do respawn, actually.

And yes, i had wildlife, and plenty mole dogs and troglodytes, and my marksdwarf slaughtered all of them.

Nothing has respawned yet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Do cave creatures respawn over time?
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:22:00 pm »
I mean cave creatures as in bats, rats, troglodytes, and such... There were plenty when i arrived but they're all dead now (i used a utility to start off with a legendary marksman/ambusher/wrestler/etc...) and i'm wondering if i'll see any more of them

Even wild animals arent respawning, even though i know they normallly do, so i'm kinda worried that my game file might be corrupt in some way (maybe i altered the init file without noticing or something)

Thanks for any enlightening answer

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When does the action start?

I have to say i find quite ridiculous the amount of bashing the OP received. He stated his idea in a polite and well-written manner, which by my standards qualifies him for a polite answer.

That being said, i gotta say i strongly disagree with his statement (basically, that surviving is too easy and that the player shouldn't have to start off without axes, picks and anvils, and forbid himself from growing anything but dimple cups to make surviving hard)

A part of what i love about DF is that it gives the player so much freedom and provides so many different ways of enjoying the game.

Sometimes, i have an idea in mind, such as building a fortress shaped like a japanese garden, where water flows everywhere and then i like not having to worry about feeding my dwarves or facing armies of dozens of pissed-off goblins.
Then, i feel like i'm 8 again, and playing with my legos. DF is even light enough (in file size) that i can even send my legos to my buddy so he too can build additional stuff to my castle. How great is that?

Some other times, i want to focus on another aspect, say the military, and then i can simply pick a tough location such as a Terrifying Tropical shore, and i get my military challenge.

If i find that it would be amusing to play the game where surviving itself should be tricky, i'll just settle my dwarves on a glacier where they wont be able to grow anything.

So i guess what i'm trying to say is : if the game was designed so that surviving in ANY place was hard, then we would lose the freedom of choosing for ourself what kind of challenge we want to face, and that would be a pity.

PS : I do agree though, that traps are overpowered. Even versus the most dreadful creatures, a bunch of cage traps will do the trick. That's a real problem in my opinion, which hopefully will be dealt with (creatures could have a chance to dodge the cage as it falls down, or could be able to break free if they're tough enough or their friends could go free them), but that's it. And until it is fixed, i'll just keep not using them.

i think it takes AT LEAST 5 years for a child to grow to an adult, and about 2-3 years for a baby to turn into a chield
