DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Traps and Training (2 Q's)
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:42:00 am »
For the mechanics, its probably because your mechanisms stockpile is far from where you wanna build the lever : they need to go back and forth numerous times to pick up mechanisms..

For the marksdwarf not training, are you sure your archery target room is "long" enough? I think they won't train if the room is too small...

Mine's 8x8 for example

Also, does he have a quiver? I'm not sure if they need one, but my marksdwarves do have a quiver, and they train, so..

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Animal pasture?
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:48:00 pm »
There are basically two ways that i know of to keep animals from roaming everywhere in your fortress :

a) cage them : they won't move but they won't breed
b) designate a garden statue room or a meeting hall : they will still breed and roam around in the room

PS : i think you can't milk animals now, i remember reading this somewhere, i'm not 100% sure though

PS2 : no animal in the game needs food. ever. except wild animals caged, but only when you try to tame them, then you give them food

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A different barracks for each squad

Why would they be less likely to hit their opponent if they are more skilled? That doesnt make any bit of sense.. Is that intended?

Or maybe i'm completely missing your point, Skanky?

They're champions and thus, i dont think i can take them off military anymore

Thanks for the answer though, if i cant think of anything better, i'll just put them on duty and train the others meanwhile

DF Gameplay Questions / A different barracks for each squad
« on: January 28, 2008, 01:50:00 pm »
Hi everyone,

Here's my situation :

I've been training 12 soldiers for eleven years now, they are all ultra mighty, perfectly agile and super dwarvenly tough, and legendary in every possible military skill

Since i have a LOT of steel, i figured i might as well give an armor set to everyone, including civilians, and have everyone spar a bit so they're not completely retarded when it comes to using their shields/armors/etc...

The thing is : i'm afraid if i have all dwarves, including the "real" soldiers, spar in one single barracks, the legendary soldiers will end up injuring the civilians, if they don't simply kill them off with one punch...

So what i wanna do is this : order the regular soldiers to keep sparring in their barracks, and build a new barracks for the newbie soldiers
Of course, i dont want the real soldiers to go spar in the newbies' barracks..

Is that even possible?

If not, can you think of a better solution than "putting the real soldiers on duty so they stop sparring while civilians are training in the barracks"?

Thanks in advance
Bog'

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is there hope for a "stark raving mad" dwarf?
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:38:00 pm »
He's a legendary miner, legendary mason, legendary engraver, legendary pump operator... And he has a steel pick.. So i'm kinda worried that he might attack some other dwarf, cuz he'd prolly shred them to pieces in the blink of an eye

But i've decided to wait n see, and not try to starve/drown/catapult him, just for the sake of science   ;)

Edit : FlashNews : he died of thirst, i guess he stopped drinking... I hope this won't make his friends all go mad (i assume he had plenty, my fortress is 11 years old)

Ok, thanks for the very fast answer by the way  :)

Further question then : is he dangerous for the other dwarves? Will he attack them? Make them feel bad?

DF Gameplay Questions / Is there hope for a "stark raving mad" dwarf?
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:14:00 pm »
Hi folks,

One of my engravers went into a tantrum lately cuz i accidently crushed one of his masterpiece when (voluntarily) collapsing a huge part of the mountain.. I guess the damn support i used was a masterpiece.. >.<

Anyway, i know there's hope sometimes for dwarves who just tantrum, the Mayor can talk to them, and make them feel better..

But what about a stark raving mad dwarf? I'm not too good in english, and i'm not sure what "stark raving" means, so i'm not really able to tell if the little guy is gone forever to cuckoo world or if i can "save" him somehow

Thanks for any help  :)

Bye

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bedroom Designations
« on: January 27, 2008, 10:15:00 pm »
I think its not a good idea to do this, because the King/Queen, from my personnal experience, is very jealous and won't allow any other noble to dwell in a Royal room..

My Queen kept throwing tantrums, despite her incredibly fancy room (walls & floors made of platinum, 8 diamond-windows, tons of platinum/aluminum/gold chests, cabinets, statues, etc...) until i made my Mayor and Dungeon Keeper abandon their Royal bedrooms, and move into Great or so bedrooms.

Her thoughts said she had been "shattered to see the luxury of a lesser's dining room/bedroom/office" or something close enough..

I'd suggest giving Her Royal Beardness her own rooms  ;) and not letting other nobles in Royal rooms

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: marksdwarves ignoring orders
« on: April 29, 2008, 12:08:00 am »
I can think of a couple reasons :

a) You didnt turn the squad to "on duty" instead of "staying down"
([m]ilitary -> [v]iew squad -> [t] to toggle to on duty)

b) The leader of the squad is busy doing something else (sleeping, drinking, humping a tame mountain goat..) and therefore, none of his minions will move, they'll just follow him around

I did notice some bags disappearing and white sand being spilled on the stockpile floor so.. i guess we have a lead. Now, to get rid of the problem, would it work to build a few ropes there and tie cats to them?

I do but my carpenters are the ones who suffer art defacement, not my woodcrafters (they're not the same persons)

I do have bins close to the magma vent, where my magma forges and smelters are, and there just might be fire snakes there, but i disabled temperature in the init file (it lags the crap out of me if i dont) so i dont know if this could be the cause of it...

I've had many goblin ambushers killed and their blood-drenched clothes stocked so maybe blood defaced the bins? Just an hypothesis out of the blue here..
