DF Gameplay Questions / My Carpenters keep suffering "Art Defacement"
« on: April 28, 2008, 06:53:00 pm »
Hey folks

I'm having a new problem since i'm playing with the new version of DF :

I tend to get a whole lot of messages that my carpenters' (and only theirs) masterworks have been lost.

I have no thieves stealing them, i have no tantruming dwarf destroying anything, i'm wondering if this is just a bug or if i'm missing something...

For a while now, my carpenters have been making nothing but bins and barrels,so the only possible explanation i see is : when they make a masterwork bin, and some dwarf takes it to a stockpile to stuff it with stone crafts or whatever, the game considers it has been lost....

Any idea on what's going on here is highly appreciated

Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Sand Bags go to what stockpile?
« on: April 28, 2008, 05:25:00 pm »
Hey everyone

Simple question :

The wiki says Sand Bags go into Furniture Stockpiles, so i forbid "boxes and bags" from one Furniture Stockpile (lets name it SP1) and allowed nothing but "boxes and bags" in another Furniture Stockpile (SP2), closer to the Glass Furnaces

Turns out the empty bags do indeed go to SP2, but the bags full of sand still go into SP1 (SP1 is allowed to contain a whole lot of other crap, leather, cloth, finished goods, other furniture, etc..)

Can anyone help me fix this?

Thanks in advance

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dogs following Trainer
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:32:00 pm »
ok, thanks but i never used cages so this raises more questions...

1) Will the caged dogs be able to defend the fortress when there's a kobold thief for example?
2) Will the caged dogs breed anyway?
3) Won't they starve to death?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dogs following Trainer
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:11:00 pm »
Hey everyone

I started tonite a whole new fortress (my old one didnt have any flux   :o ) and when reading the "Your first fortress" article in the wiki, there was this advise to dump the initial anvil cause the first dwarven caravan would bring one anyway.. so i did

Since i had so many points to spend, i thought "Hey lets bring a whole army of dogs for fun", so i embarked with 12 dogs and one of my miners also set to "Proficient Animal Trainer"...

After a month or two, i trained the 12 doggies into War Dogs, who took out a bunch of kobold thieves in the blink of an eye, life was bright...

But now, i realise that the damn doggies follow their trainer everywhere, no matter what he's doing (usually, mining), and so do their 20 or so puppies... So i got this guy followed by about 30 dogs anywhere he goes, and it causes much slowing down of the computer...

I was wondering how i could maybe station those dogs, or at least the war dogs, to a position (a zone? a stockpile?), so they would quit harrassing the poor miner...

Thanks for help
Bye

DF Gameplay Questions / The way trading (broker) skills improve..
« on: December 01, 2007, 04:22:00 pm »
Hi everyone

I'm wondering about the way trading skills improve...

According to the Wiki :

quote:
Broker skills are the ones used by the outpost broker to conduct trades. They are:

   * Comedian
   * Flatterer
   * Intimidator
   * Persuader
   * Negotiator
   * Liar
   * Judge of intent

They are gained by:

   * Successful trades at the trade depot.
   * Finalizing an export agreement.

Notable ways through which they are not gained include:

   * Proposing an unsuccessful trade at the depot (except Judge of Intent).
   * Offering goods to foreign traders.
   * Simply being assigned as the broker noble.
   * Sitting around at the depot, whether there are traders there or not.
   * Liaison meeting steps that occur before the export agreement.

My question is :

Do you get for those skills a plain XP boost with every successful trade you do, or is the amount of XP earned based on the value (or less likely, the weight) of the items you trade?

Lets say you have the items A B C D for trade, being worth 1-2-3-4
The merchants have items a b c being worth 3-3-4

For my broker, is it better to trade A+B for a, then C for b, then D for c, than to trade A+B+C+D for a+b+c, or does it make no difference at all?

Thanks for any help
Bye

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can you kill your King/Queen?
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:06:00 am »
I finally discovered what was driving her mad every minute :

She didnt care that her bedroom wasnt ready yet, i'm sure she could've waited longer.. Even when her Supremely Royal Bedroom/Dining Room/Throne Room/Mausoleum was completed, with all the Platinum/Aluminum/Gold furniture, she still kept throwing tantrums >.<

She was getting upset because my Mayor and my Dungeon Master both also had "Royal" rooms, and the Queen wasn't able to accept that! I moved my Mayor and Dungeon Master to a less fancy room, and then the Queen's quickly moved from "very unhappy" to "ecstatic"

The two others didn't seem to mind the downgrade of their rooms, by the way

So now, everything's well in "CrazeGirders"  :)

Doesnt it also affect their damage reduction if they get hit? I figured this was the whole point of the skill..

DF Gameplay Questions / Training "Armor User" skill specifically
« on: January 25, 2008, 04:37:00 pm »
Hi everyone

My soldiers are sparring like crazy in the barracks, and their skills are really high, they're all champions, with Legendary Wrestler, Shield User, WhateverWeapon User, and they all tend to suck in Armor User...

I never made them spar without an armour, by the way, they already had the whole set (plate + helm + greaves + 2 boots + 2 gauntlets + shield) when the barracks was designated

So it seems that armor user trains a lot slowlier than other military skills..

Any idea on how to speed the process would be highly appreciated  :)

Thanks in advance

DF Gameplay Questions / Breaking the Mayor's mandate
« on: January 25, 2008, 02:02:00 pm »
Hi everyone

My mayor made a mandate saying "export of turtle shell items prohibited"

I got a couple questions :

1) I have zero items made of turtle shells, but hundreds of them are decorated with turtle shell... Will he mind if i trade those away?

2) My Mayor also happens to be my broker.. If he gets mad cuz i sold shell-decorated items, will he get mad at himself (the broker) or at the bonecarvers?

Thanks for help

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Will traps kill traders?

I think traders don't trigger traps at all, they can just walk on them, like your dwarves
