DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / .40.02 > Dwarves Jumping Down Wells
« on: July 13, 2014, 10:06:46 am »
Playing Fortress Mode.

I've got a room over a water-filled cavern, and since it is a freezing biome, I needed a well to get fresh water. Now I have dwarves jumping into the well, and have had at least 6 deaths. There's nothing down there for them to pick up - this is the lowest level of the fortress but only the top cavern layer. They're not falling in by crowded jostling. They walk to the lower level, jump into the well, and then drown in the cavern.

Anyone else had any problem with dwarven wishing well syndrome? Should I report it to the bug tracker?

Nice, a vampire queen!

I've got a fort running with a puny vampire baron who also acts as manager and bookkeeper. He's got his own four-room suite that serves as his bedroom and office. One of the rooms has a workshop in it (he was a mason) with a little stone stockpile, so I can lock him in that specific room if I ever need to. Attached to this four room suite is a large lever room with lots and lots of levers (more than I could possibly need). Attached to the lever room is a sock & misc garment room so the vampire can replace his socks when they wear out. I generally keep all the doors locked up tight.

Just so that the mortal dwarves can learn an object lesson from his vampiric nature, though, I built the whole complex out of glass blocks and windows. Noble vampires must be put on display at the very least.

I kind of like the idea of a fortress dedicated to the Dark Queen of Blood, though, where you let her run free and if someone important happens to die, well, they weren't in harmonic accord with the cult. I don't know how you'd account for the justice system - you might need to make her the Sheriff or Captain of the Guard, for instance. You might want to research it before dedicating yourself to this route - I'm sure something has been posted about it somewhere regarding forestalling justice.

Let us know what you do with her!

Good luck!

Take this Moleweasel Kit with you. It's dangerous out there.

Get rid of digging invaders, they are currently broken. And you shouldn't just turn them off on the launcher panel, you should comment out all lines in the dfhack.ini file that deal with digging invaders.

I thought one of the things MW did was rebalance the various egg laying creatures so they weren't so broken.

It does, yeah. They spit out far fewer eggs than in vanilla.

Moleweasels and Frill Lizards are the cats of Masterwork, they both help get rid of vermin.

I've checked out your init file and run a diff on it with mine. The only difference is in mine, I have the rendermax line commented out. You could try commenting it out and see if that improves the crash situation.

I hope it helps, because more talented individuals than myself will have to step up if it doesn't.

Edit: Try rolling back two seasons after you make the DFHack change to get rid of whatever is trying to crash the game. There might be a digging creature actively trying to dig - mine was a Frost Giant Thief stuck in the moat. When I deleted the DFHack stuff, though, he vanished.

Here are a couple of Google+ posts I've made about Machinetorture (the name of the actual fort). The expedition is The Gooey Beds, and our civilization is named The Steely Tongs. The river is called The Concern of Women, and the hill we are on named Barrenhill.

There's a joke in all those random names, somewhere, but as all my nobles are women I shall leave all punchlines up to the imagination.

What graphics pack do you use, Casei? I'm really surprised that a 9 year old was able to pick up the game.

Like Kreydurst, I use Ironhand. I pointed him toward the Lazy Newb Pack to make his life easier. The ASCII is pretty off-putting to many, so I tend to show the game to the unwashed uninitiated using the graphics pack. That way it looks no more intimidating than, say, Zelda.

He enjoyed the game enough to stick with it a couple of months, but he's moved on to Minecraft because he can play it with his cousins on a private server.

This summer my boss's 9 year-old son spent a lot of time at our workplace, and one day I brought my laptop and showed him a stable fortress. His eyes widened at the little features of the fort, from the atom-smasher to the lion pit.

"I can do all this?"

"And more."

He downloaded it that night, and brought his own laptop the next day. Over the next few weeks I gave him advice on how to have slightly less FUN (he was having plenty of FUN on his own).

By the end of the summer he had built a relatively stable fort under my guidance.

I knew I had done well the day he came in with his tablet instead of his laptop.

"Where is the fort?" I asked.

"I accidentally flooded it."

"Oh no, that's terrible."

"NO WAY! IT WAS AWESOME!"

You can also use the mouse scroll-wheel to go in and out and 'fix' it (and by fix, I mean 'for a short time' and 'most of the time').

Kormenu: Thanks!

Thankfully, the crashes have been fixed by completely eliminating the digging invader references from the dfhack ini files. The nice embark is safe.

As for the camels, well, as I tiled the river closer to them, they'd run out of range. I decided to make easier work of the entire affair and dig out the wall of the gorge. The camels proceeded to leap out of the river and into the fish farm, where I had the military mop them up. Two survivors were on the opposite side of the map, but both were males, so I let them be. Amusingly enough, all of the camels were quite corpulent, so whatever water lilies or seaweed or goblin bones they were gnawing on was quite satisfying for them.

We are now dining heartily on the three that we managed to capture in the fish traps.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Sadly, in spite of the Embark Point of Epicness, I'm going to give up playing this save - I reached a point that makes it crash almost as soon as it is loaded.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: First loyalty cascade

So much !!FUN!!.

I had my first loyalty cascade recently, too, and with similar circumstances. From 225 dwarves down to 11. A migrant wave saved my bacon.
