DF Suggestions / Refugees

Bands of refugees (not sure if they should be from non-dwarven races or not) fleeing from nearby warzones turn up on the map and request refuge. You can assimilate them into the fortress or shelter them for a specified while. These positive actions will result in better relations with the faction that the refugees are from (and may trigger some kind of reward?) Alternatively, you can turn them away or kill them, resulting in a drop in relations with the faction they are from.

You guys seem to be so good at the game! How into the game does it take to reach a level where you can build such heavy ships, both time spent in one save and also overall time spent playing the game?

Are soldiers affected by lack of infrastructure on a hostile world?

OK, thanks guys. More questions: Can geological teams be dropped off on hostile planets with no Infrastructure and be expected to carry out a survey before they asphyxiate? Also, does low gravity or other planetary characteristics affect the quaity of soldiers trained on that planet?

How do I conduct an orbital geological survey? I have three ships in a task force; They all work and they have geological sensors. I order the task force to conduct a survey at Luna, and the game shows that they accumulate survey points, but when I go to the Population and Production screen all the minerals have a value of "-".
