DF General Discussion / Re: DFFD Hosting Dilemma
« on: January 07, 2015, 07:31:06 pm »
The concern would still be for that one potential month where you get a huge influx of bandwidth usage, and that month's bill ends up being astronomical due to the overage charges, making the plan more costly in the long run.

On the other hand, hopefully peopel will use torrents or other file hosting services more often. So I'd suggest starting with 8TB Linode plan. We don't have a lot of other options and time left, and neither better  traffic usa data for peak months. Of course if my calculations are correct.

What was the (possible) deal with Toady again - did he have a server or was just going to pay?

p.s. as I promised before, I can still offer my help if the price is < 1000$/year.

Maybe I missed it, but what does this mean in terms of monthly traffic?

Oh, silly me! There's a page with download statistics http://dffd.wimbli.com/rankings.php?sort=file_downloads_per_day&limit=100 (daily counts are approximation, but at least something).

For the most popular 100 packages it gives 107GB/day or 3.3TB/month. Not that much, actually.

Try deleting hack/libstdc++.6.dylib. That's there to fix a bunch of Lua-related crashes that occur with DF's libstdc++ (in libs/), but I doubt it works on 10.6. I could try adjusting some more GCC build flags, I suppose.

What were the crashes, by the way? I'm doing a lot of Lua coding recently and never seen any crashes (well, except for the ones I believe caused by C++ part of my code).
Lua error messages crash the game.

Oh so it's not something you can do from Lua code. Thanks.

To encourage people to use the torrents, though, I would recommend a small fee per download.

Putting a paywall on, effectively, the least-viewed files would be a strong disincentive to download someone's save just to help them fix their minecart setup. The community would suffer, I think.

I'd hope that the server would be able to be the initial and permanent seed, to prevent the complete inability to get the file without paying for it.  Yes, this means the server still has outgoing bandwith costs, but they should be reduced by an order of magnitude.  Incidentally, that's why my proposals for the fee are so much higher than the actual bandwidth cost for the file in question.

That's hardly fair to people who can't torrent or don't know how to torrent or what a torrent is.

To those who can't torrent, true.  Then again, that's why the fees are so low.

You can't be serious about the fees, huh? I hardly know any paid file hosting service, but paid downloads for a free game is a really strange idea.

I imagine a feature like this would make some people squick a bit, but it could have it's practical applications. Prepared elephant brains, for example, would appear as actual brains instead of a generic meat item.

Interesting idea (however apart from some organs it's hard for me to recognise anything on your image:) ). I need to check how body parts are handled / rendered.

I got 5.40 on my tiny netbook, it does start up (Twbt overrides work) in the menu and world generator, but after loading a map and trying to play, it instantly crashes. I'm not sure if its multilevel or simply the poor netbook that is trying to do OpenGL. "Dwarf Fortress has stopped working", on Win7, vanilla df.

I think the easiest would be to try 0.40.19 with 5.37 (https://github.com/mifki/df-twbt/releases) of your hardware.

Hmm, sounds like a decent value as such services go. I checked and it looks like double the bandwidth (16 TB) just directly costs twice as much at $160, which is a reasonable increase. However, it looks like if you use more bandwidth in a month beyond your plan's allocation (whether on an 8 TB plan, 16 TB plan, or whatever), the additional bandwidth runs at $0.10/GB, which is pretty steep (~$100 per TB). A really high bandwidth month could end up being extremely expensive if it caught you by surprise. Though I doubt the site would go over 16 TB in a month, I don't know for sure, and it's worth considering. Their highest cost plans are also all capped at 20 TB bandwidth.

Well, you wrote "highest it reached long ago while I was actually checking was somewhere in the range of several TB", now you're saying that 8TB won't be enough. That's a different story then, and (while I don't know what he told you, so just my guess), probably, for Toady as well.

Can't you turn on logging at least for a week until 15th so that we have at least some estimate? Or maybe your current hosting provider can give some information?

It seems it's time to implement proper overrides for standard buildings)

Thank you for your hard work with this starter pack.

There's a problem with TWBT in this version. As soon as I maximize the window, or load a fortress, the game crashes.

Edit: just seen the temp solution on page 138. but it crashes as well

Download 5.40 from http://build.mifki.com

oops the same mistake as before, sorry.
try 5.40

- updated TwbT to v5.38; recent changes to mousequery not included

There's 5.39 already with changes to plugins, thanks to fricy.

868
Version 5.38 is available with support for 0.40.23. Please test on Win/Linux.
I'll have to check changes made to mousequery and other plugins and merge them into versions included with twbt a bit later.

As for folder structure, 1. I just thought people are getting twbt primarily in starter packs, and then only updating if I release new version between starter pack releases. So I didn't actually care much about what's included in my package. 2. If you're installing manually, you'll have to configure it anyway (specify fonts and print_mode in init.txt), so just copying won't install it properly. 3. On OS X you can't merge folders by dragging/dropping them anyway. 4. In old days (and who knows, maybe sometime again) the package included builds for several df/dfhack versions, and I didn't want to duplicate all other files as well just to have df-like folder structure.
So.. I'll better add installation instruction in readme file instead.

Edit: I've merged every open PR and updated a few things, so this branch should compile and work with 0.40.23 (at least, it does on OS X): https://github.com/lethosor/dfhack/tree/0.40.23-r1-rc
Umm... Thanks but... Am I supposed to compile it somehow? I don't even use *nix, you know. Where can I get compiled Windows version?

sorry

Hm, terms of service are hard to understand sometimes, but for example in Linode's TOS I don't see anything about file hosting services. And it's only $80/month for 192GB storage 8TB transfer. And we could also host something else useful (like several webfort servers :) )  there because we'll get a lot of RAM/CPU.
