DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Right... Should have expected that
« on: November 08, 2014, 03:53:24 am »
So in my last few forts I've been getting a handle on quantum stockpiles and I absolutely love them, not sure how I managed before. So in my new fort I have this brilliant idea: my kitchen/farm area is up fairly high but I wanted my dining hall down deep, under the various workshop levels and closer to the bedrooms, so to save on walking and hauling I made a chute to drop food and drinks near the hall.

Fortunately the first casualty was only a useless child, he shall not be missed.

So how do I avoid having dorfs getting their heads crushed by falling wine pots? Is this viable at all?

EDIT: alright, I'm losing dorfs children at an alarming rate... So this might be considered a success after all.

Why not make the vampire his trainer? That would solve one problem atleast.

P.S. What's the life span of a dragon anyways?

Hey, new to the modding thing. How do I make my smiths produce foreign weapons? (Whips, mauls, longswords, etc)

That's a beverage. Put it with the dwarf wine.

DF General Discussion / A quick thank you

I will admit, the first time I tried playing Dwarf Fortress, I looked at the screen, became quickly terrified and disoriented, then turned it off. I didn't even think to play it again until two years later when a friend gave me a tour of his thriving fortress and demonstrated his gcs silk farming operation. Since that day I've been hooked.

If it was up to me, I would include the latest version of df on Voyager 3.

Thanks, Toady

I can't get it to work 100% of the time... more like 90% of the time but I often just build a series of water wheels and trap the water in using two floodgates at a depth of 7 over most tiles and 6 at one or two (so the water continually sloshes back and fouth). In the current version of DF this constitutes flowing water and you get power without any lag.

Usually I build a large snake like this:

This is intriguing... Is it lagless or just lag-resistant? Does it work in all versions?

It could be useful to train your smiths without wasting iron.

Yeah, the best part of hammer/xbow dorfs is that they run out of bolts and just start wailing on stuff with both hands (hence the steel crossbows) like I hoped they would.

I've heard copper crossbows are better for bashing with(heavier, I guess?). But I'm definitely making a xbow/hammer squad.

I'm gonna give her my artifact xbow and a short sword. Seems more obvious to give her a hammer but there's a certain adamantine scimitar she's going to go fetch one day...

If you're playing 40.xx and talking about a certain "in the stone" sword... I have some bad news for you...

Nope, 34.11! And this will be my first clown experience... Should be FUN!

I had a vampire singled out once, dropped him into the caverns as punishment, with no way home. Gave him a suit of leather armor and an iron sword for mercy, no shield. Ignored him. About eight years game time later, BAM "Urist McVampire has entered a martial trance!" Went to the location, and guess what I find? The same vampire, now legendary in every combat skill he'd used, fighting a swarm of rutherers. Vampires are mightily strong, you may want to keep him, singled away from everyone in a danger room 24/7. Siege shows up, seal the fort, and set him on the siege in masterwork steel and candy. Watch the massacre.

My thoughts exactly...

On a slightly related note, if I assign one of my military both melee and ranged will they actually swap between them and use them effectively?

If I have my bloodsucking mayor isolated will she lose the next election? How often are mayoral elections?
