DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to assign Civilian Burrow (Steam)

In classic you could assign all civilians to a burrow. This was useful for getting everyone inside during a siege. Is there a way to do this in the steam version? I haven't been able to found a way.

DF Gameplay Questions / Haven't seen vampires in years

... as in irl years, not fort years. I remember when I first started playing, vamps were my favorite part of the game, but they never appear for me anymore. I see other people posting about them all the time, is there something I can do to boost the chance?

I already increase the number of vampire curses in custom world gen, and give people their own rooms. I usually embark in year 500-750 or so, maybe I need to wait longer? World gen slows to a crawl the longer it goes on though :/

I can't find more info on the forums other than increasing curses and making individual bedrooms. Any help is appreciated

Hi all, in my most recent fort I experienced something weird.

I was working on a pump stuck when suddenly, "An ambush, curse them!"
I sent my axe lords to deal with it, then halfway through the battle, another goblin ambush arrives. Then another. And another... Before I know it my dwarves have fought about 6 ambushes. I thought that was quite a few, but nothing noteworthy.
A couple in-game days later, another ambush arrives at the edge of the map. I send my dwarves, but as I finish each gobling squad, another ambush arrives, one after the other, seemingly without end. In all my dwarves fought off about 50-75 ambushes, of 3-5 goblins each. There was never a siege announcement.

I noticed that the ambushes stopped when my militia was all piled up on the square they were entering the map from. The instant I moved my squad, the stream of ambushes began again. They eventually stopped when I left my dwarves stationed there for approximately an in-game month before moving them again.
There was approximately a 3 second delay between each ambush (I don't know what it was in clicks), and I did not have to finish off one ambush before the next arrived.

I wasn't able to find anything like this on the wiki or forums. I haven't created a bug report because this isn't totally vanilla df (but the raw changes I made were very minor, and the only thing I changed about goblins was natural strength and siege pop-condition). I can upload a save if anyone is interested, but sadly I saved after all of this happened.

Any thoughts on possible causes?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Effects of Caves on World Gen

Hi all, I was wondering if putting non-mountain caves on the map affects world gen, or anything else?

I really want to play an embark with one, so to ensure I find one in the right place I put 200 of them on a medium sized world. But the world gen seems...weird. I am finding that none of the civs appear to make more than 4 sites. This only concerns me because my main embark criteria is plentiful goblin neighbors.

Other major changes I made that could affect this are a massive number of vampire curses (advanced world gen), and huge shifts in populations/frequencies of natural predators (raws), like cave crocodiles and grizzly bears. I've done those before though, so I don't think that's it.

Any help is appreciated!

DF Gameplay Questions / Justice System

Do any of my fellow DFers dabble in the justice system? I remember never using it in the past, because my Captain of the Guard would turn into a murderous vigilante. But I really want to try implementing it for role playing purposes.

What if I assign my weak, crippled fisher dwarf as captain of the guard, and ensure I have enough chains in my prison so it doesn't fill up and minor offenses don't get "downgraded" to beatings. Bam, non-lethal justice?

Will this work? (do prisons work?)

DF Gameplay Questions / Unexplained Crash

Hi all, I keep getting a crash in my fort, and I can't figure out why. I decided to check my error log for the first time, but I don't know what it means, or if any of these are the cause of the crash

I have made quite a few raw changes, but this fort has lasted ~2.5 in game years. The raw changes relate mostly to GSC/wolf/bear frequency, goblin strength/agility, and dwarf strength/agility. I also have ironhand installed.

This is on 43.05. I can upload the save if anyone is interested.



Edit: I also added the [AMBUSHER] tag to goblins, which I heard may be buggy. However I got a perfectly normal ambush not too long ago.

DF Modding / Noob question about skill rate/rust changes

I've been reading around a bit about changing skill exp gain. Specifically, I want to reduce the rate at which dwarves gain military/mining exp, and remove skill rust completely. I saw in this thread:

Are the rates displayed? And does that advice still work? And lastly, can I pick and choose which particular skill rates I want to change?

Other Games / Age of Empires II & Other Games

Hi all, long time df player here, I wanted to survey the community on other games you guys are interested in. I have a couple IRL friends that play DF and most of them play DF exclusively; they claim other games don't hold a candle to it (which I agree with), but one friend plays every game under the sun, and says he gets bored playing just one game.

So, my question is, what other games do you play? Are you as invested/interested in those as you are in DF? And do you like consoles, or PC games only?




For me personally, the only game I play other than DF is AOE2. It might surprise some of you to know that there is a large and active multiplayer community on Steam. It would be awesome to play with someone from the DF forums!

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick question about stack pumps

Is it possible to run an entire stack pump (in this case 30+ z-levels) with just a single dwarf at the top? I thought it was, but it's not working for me. I ensured to channel between z-levels to transmit power between pumps, but when I have a dwarf pumping at the top z-level, nothing happens.

The pump works just fine when there is a dwarf pumping at every level. The only problem I can think of is that the stack requires way more power than a single dwarf can provide, but I was under the impression that a single dwarf was enough.

Is there another nooby mistake I could be making?

DF General Discussion / How to transfer saves?

So I am very excited for the new release, and I want to play my current fort with the updates. I have two question:

1. Is 0.42.06 completely compatible with saves from the previous version, or are there bugs associated with moving saves?

2.  How do I move my save? Is it as simple as moving the world over into a file called "save" under "data" in the new version, or do I need to move the world plus an actual save folder? Also, will this keep my init and graphics settings?

Any help is appreciated!

I'm sorry if there is another thread on this, but I wasn't able to find one.

I am wondering if I can affect what topics my dwarves choose to write on. I have around 15 codices at this point, but 14 of them are histories of various dwarven and human hamlets. I want my dwarves to write manuals about crafts and scientific subjects, which feels more dwarfy to me. Is there a way to make this happen?
