DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I set a population cap?
« on: October 23, 2014, 03:38:57 pm »
How do my fellow Fortress overseers set their population limits? As far as I know there is no Lazy Newb Pack for this version. Do you change it in the raws? If so, how?

I usually make steel weapons and everything else iron, if I'm short on metals/coal. However, my fort is at 95 dwarves and I have 5 wood furnaces...

Protip: Don't make your general dining halls into rooms, dwarves don't spend their free time socializing. They don't form close bonds nearly as quickly, so deaths initially result in fewer tantrums, and it takes years before dwarves start having children, resulting in a more efficient fortress.

#1 thing I do is, don't use cage-traps.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: siegeless in Seattle
« on: October 17, 2014, 04:34:29 pm »
Since the siege fix in .10? I have had almost zero sieges. I've started ne embarks each version, hit a pop of over 100, wealth in the tens of millions, with all noble positions filled each time. I make sure to embark within a few squares of a goblin fort that I'm at war with plus every faction and at least 1-3 towers listed on the neighbors screen. After 10+ years, I'm lucky if I get one half hearted siege and maybe a Snatcher or two. I've made short histories and long ones but it doesn't seem to matter. After at least eight forts I'm starting to think something is seriously wrong. Any ideas, sieges were always my favorite part of the game.

That's a bummer. I'm similarly disappointed with sieges. However, I am sieged basically once a year, but it's always exactly 6 goblins, and I always crush them with exactly 1 speardwarf :/

DF Modding / Wanted: Harder goblins in 2014 version
« on: October 17, 2014, 04:27:39 pm »
Hey all, I play DF quite a bit, but don't even have Dabbling in the Modding skill. I searched around a bit, and couldn't find what I wanted in DF2014.

Essentially I just want to make your average goblin siege more difficult. I want to give each goblin some starting skills, namely:
Armor User: Legendary
Shield User: Legendary
Discipline: Legendary
Dodger: Professional
Wrestler: Professional
Fighter: Professional

Can someone post a simple way to do this in the Raws. I do NOT want to change goblin size or add different types of goblins. Ideally I don't want to download DFhack either.

Thanks guys :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Trading food versus Trading Rock Crafts

Usual exports: ~8 bins masterwork metal crafts, gold, silver, etc.
Excess armor, if I'm on an embark with plenty of iron.

No matter how valuable prepared meals are the one thing I always stockpile for a rainy day, no matter what.

Speaking of SPAM and how it ruins the workflow tool.

Coming soon to a DF near you... (Windows only i'm afraid)

DFMon V0.0001.

A tool which replaces the mini alert bar and gives you an alternative alerts screen to look at. It also lets you see combat as it plays out rather than just from any one units perspective (of course this is very confusing for multiple simultaneous battles).

Anyway the real benefit comes when you set up custom filters to ignore certain spam. Basically you can shove whatever you like into the filter exceptions and no longer suffer spam from it, and you can make these filters as specific as you want. (for now only a single part of a text string such as "feed animal: No Path" but eventually things like "Web" + "Cancel" so you can have names in between,

I was inspired to make this by 10000s of web spam when I started up my forgotten beast silk farm.

Unfortunately I'm a c# Programmer so this is a Windows application at the moment and I've not had a chance to test how the UI looks without the aero interface yet! It is definately not linux or apple friendly though as I make use of Windows stuff to minimize/maximuse/resize windows/find df

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nice! Please let us know when it's complete, this sounds very useful.

The best way I've figured out to avoid tantrum spirals is not using meeting areas. Don't let your dwarves congregate there, because they waste time and build close relationships with EVERYONE in the fort, so as soon as one person dies everyone goes nuts.

I also like to eventually make separate barracks for each squad.

I've had this exact problem before, but it only happened one time on one fort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Elves, and more competent warriors
« on: September 19, 2014, 05:05:27 am »
What would make elves more capable and still fit the generalized lore Toady has lain out?

I like nice and simple. Significantly increase their attributes (archery, dodging, etc.) and somewhat increase their strength (or size if you want).

Can someone help me do this? I've never used DF Hack before. Is there even one for the new version?

Step by step instructions would be appreciated :)

W = Wall
G = Gate (bridge)
X = Stairs

A drawbridge with 2 guard towers. The towers have ammo stockpiles on the 2nd floor, and fortifications on the 3rd floor, plus a roof.

Very simple, very aesthetically pleasing and symmetric, very efficient.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: when to military
« on: September 03, 2014, 06:44:52 pm »
Maybe you guys play very differently from me, but I don't even start my military until I have 50 dwarves, and even then the first squad I make is marksdwarves.

However, I always build a bridge/gatehouse early on, so I can lock down my fort. I find it's less labor intensive early on (takes maybe 2 dwarves to build these), so that I can use military dwarves in economic labors before I commit them to squads.
