Where are you getting the Lance from twin? Like you, they enemies are trainees which means 4 mov. Also the melee should move up and protect you anyway, so you'd probably only get shot.

On short notice it may be difficult to train a proper standing retinue, but the woodsmen and women this far east tend to share the cultural heritage of the Brettians to some extent, and are keen archers. We could also attempt to construct an infantry force of some sort, though without a source of iron we may have issues keeping them properly armed. We can reasonably assume a force of axemen with hatchets, but armor for proper soldiers and knights may be impossible without significant investment on your part. Finally, while we may also hire mercenaries temporarily until you return... they can be a disloyal lot, especially when not kept under a strict hand, and we have no idea for how long you will be called to service."

Everything taken care of Charles decided to hunt down Harold. He'd needed to inquire about "Red" and to see it was possible to gather anymore volunteers for the upcoming battle. He found him cleaning up the deceased bandits.
