Thoven was born to a pair of hunters who lived in Ide, a small and remote village located about a quarter of a day's travel from a forest and mostly unknown to all but those who called it home; it provided a simple and peaceful life, perfect for raising a child. When Thoven was eventually taught how to hunt and survive he particularly enjoyed training in the nearby forest. It was after one such lesson during his sixteenth year with his mother that his simple and peaceful life came to a sudden end.
On their way home they spotted smoke in the direction of the village. His mother, being more than wise enough to know something terrible had happened, instructed him to wait in the forest and for the love of The Verdant Mother to stay there until she came back to get him. A day passed and there was no response; soon a week had passed and there was still no sign of his mother. He decided he waited long enough and returned home to find the village scorched and it's inhabitants laying dead in the streets accompanied by several hyenas and two gnolls.
He spent the next day burying the village and burning the monsters responsible. He spent the second-day sleeping and grieving. On the third day as he packed his things in preparation to leave a lone traveler entered the village and cursed when he learned Thoven was the only villager still alive. As it turned out, the traveler was a bounty hunter and had spent a good deal of time hunting down one of the villagers, a target of an old grudge by some noble in Lakinium apparently. After a good deal of persistence on Thoven's part the traveler agreed to take him on as an apprentice of sorts; strange yes, but not the strangest.
All was well and good again, except for Thoven's reservations about killing other human beings of course. He knew full well the pain it could inflict, but he eventually learned to cope by thinking of them as nothing but prey to be hunted. Ten years had now passed since his mentor had taken him in and now life had tripped him with yet another obstacle stealthily placed along his path. His mentor was killed, seemingly in an act of random thug violence after his mentor had taken on a more than shady bounty.
The killer was never found; only a broach of dwarven design that was given to Thoven after the investigation turned up no leads or results as he claimed it as his mentor's. He believes it belonged to his mentor's killer, whom he has sworn to hunt down to the end of the world if need be, and that it will one day prove crucial in identifying them. Three more years have since passed with only the slimmest of leads to go off of and now Thoven, who by now he has accumulated a somewhat notable reputation, has found himself in Kolos with the need to fill his pockets. While not officially a member of the Kolos guards he has joined them to assist with Milestride Jack and potentially others.
