DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack, 40.24-r20

Only thing I realize is I had days older dfhack compiled from git installed. I guess that changes the file enough to que the message.  I'll try to update my old DF install's dfhack to  current resave and recopy and try again. I can't try now so I'm typing about it instead...

I made a world and embarkex in it on a vanilla no tilset/graphic/ mods, I copy it to the save folder in the proper place. Then when I install a graphic pack via LNP interface, it works and skips the save with the "would have broken raws" message.

is there an easy way to turn off that protection or  is the problem I need to install graphics before genning the world and its legit?

Thanks

How about Google? I dropped it in my google drive before I left work and remembered I could share it from there.

But I am not comfortable with this, I am not familiar enough with Google shares to know the world can't see all my stuff now. But, I think you are an advanced user based on your posts, and you probably have already compiled your own,and you are trying to call me out as if I am doing something malicious, in an effort maybe to protect the community. so I am posting this on here, linked to my personal Google drive on my personal email account I have used forever professionally, to show that I am not being malicious and used zippy share out of lazyness not maliciousness. And don't misunderstand my tone, I am being blunt not angry, in fact i applaud the inoculous question tryn g to smoke out a bad guy, which i am not,but this should show this is me simply trying to share, as it's been awhile and I bet there are alot of people that use prospect and reveal as their only dfhack tools to start a fort and may be waiting patiently.  Even though I am a jerk, I value being a tiny member of this community and don't want people  to think I am malicious.

The point of that wall of text is to say I will remove the Google link in a few days, so get it while its hot, but BACK U P YOUR SAVES, and do not bother to the pack maintainers with yelling WHEN it corrupts your save, instead, post the juicy details of what you were doing and if you have a tileset and/or other mods so they can get a tip about where to look for bugs. Phrase it like a report and not a complaint.

They will release it when they are comfortable with it, they do not release it early because it's not worth their time to have people that won't BACK U P THEIR saves cry about their lost fort, so please don't do that and make it my fault that they are getting angry emails about dfhack blowing up their computer.  *edit*  however , it seems they would like reports on the specifics for bug hunting

I thought about dffd, but this felt so unofficial I didn't think it would be cool. Seriously, I dont even know if this is cool, if it was ready for release, they would release it, its obviously not, but after reading the post pleaing for a pre alpha/cuniaform version, and I had just compiled it, it seemed like a good idea at the time. *edit* The post after this is a request to please REPORT specifics of what happened with errors so they can hunt bugs. I am adding" please remember it is a report and not a request for help, they may ask for more info or they may not respond at all"

Seriously, print out the compile doc and READ and complete each line, then check it off.  You will save yourself and more importantly others time.  I am helping, its called tough love. its meant to embarrass you so you actually go read every line of available documentation. In future tasks, this will allow you to complete your task vs reading the heading and trying each thing and then getting stuck from not reading the details, such as when you ignored the documentation and did not select the button the set the PATH, and again possibly now with not having SV 2010 SP1.

If you want to get into this thing,(programming/compiling code/ advanced windows use?) You are going to have to learn to follow instructions and thoroughly at that.

If that makes me a troll, I guess I am a troll, but, I like to think I am more of a funky dwarf.

Here is an excerpt from the build documentation. Why are you bothering people when you didn't even bother to read and follow the instructions?

CMake

You can get the win32 installer version from the official site. It has the usual installer wizard. Make sure you let it add its binary folder to your binary search PATH so the tool can be later run from anywhere.

DF General Discussion / Re: How is DF not technically doomed?

So if the only way to make a single core of a processor faster is to use a smaller manufacturing process, does that mean an AMD and Intel chip at the same manufacturing process size and hertz deliver exactly the same performance? Of course not, architecture matters, and the upcoming AMD Zen chip is trying to close the gap with Intel and is supposedly sporting a 40% IPC gain from architecture alone, independent of manufacturing process.

Don't be so sure we are done making cores run faster.

Sure is! Memory does not serve me well!

Jwoodward48df have you tried from a console (command prompt) to watch what happens like the helpful sv-esk suggested?

The stability of the Linux version was specifically for one of the other dead remote programs. There is a memory leak or something.

BOOM! What the hell... This community never ceases to surprise. I was searching for a good way to do this for a while, finally give up and use a Google drive to sync multiple locations, and this hits from nowhere. I mean you been working on this for years? In seclusion like a strange mood dwarf?  Or did I miss this posted elsewhere long ago? Holy cow, nice work. Thank you for this. I will check it out. Thanks again!!

Heh, oh yeah that makes sense. The versioning information.

We should make this the general chat thread.

The facts:

1.it uses dev time to optimize. further devving (the other 57.94% of the game) will break most prior optimizations. Why waste all that devtime to optimize each microversion of this alpha when it will change?

2.Just cause it fun to play and works (mostly) doesn't mean its a "Release" ready 1.0 product. You get to play the alpha.(lucky you!)

these are easy to understand.  #1 in particular makes it to easy to see why Toady chooses the strategy of "optimizing once at the end" over "optimize every 10% or so"

It is a chosen strategy chosen by Toady.
People who press on insisting we will not be able to play DF in 2017 or even 2024, after learning fact #1,is trolling.

There is a version without world generation and big trees, its 34.11.  Its still available. The only thing missing is world gen and big trees...

added opinion: the cpu industry will be focusing on IPC(instructions per sec) again soon to now
