DF General Discussion / Re: What linux desktop environment for DF?
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:13:08 am »
I went with lxde, cause its built to be lightweight. If I am missing any packages, apt-get is real easy so I went light.

So bandwidth issues are why people go with vnc, I wondered why they didn't just remote x over ssh.

Woot!

DF General Discussion / What linux desktop environment for DF?
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:17:18 pm »
:D I know enough to know that could be a volatile question!

I don't mean in general, I mean specifically for my scenario...I am sure all off them could be the best for whatever.

Ok enough flame retardant...here's my deal,
I got a dellrackmount 1850 with two 3.6ish(forget,irrelevant )single core xeons with 16 gigs of ram and with the few ways to "remotely" run DF,now and on the horizon, I am determined to be able to fiddle with my fort while stuck at work with downtime.   I have had a highly modded Minecraft server on it and use it to serve a few games here and there, so I am fair to middling with the Linux terminal, but never used x.

I am pretty sure DF needs x to run in Linux for opengl.

So will the ultra light environments not have stuff I need? Do I simply need opengl support? Will the fancy modern puffy ones take some cycles away from DF? or not since it dual cpu and DF uses mainly one.

My plan is to wrestle with dfeverywhere a bit.or vnc ...I know I can remotely run x over ssh on my phone, could I just play through that, with a Bluetooth keyboard lol. These are the questions I am setting  out to answer.

Tldr; which graphic environment has the least impact on df in Linux.  My distro is deb 8.
Thanks

Any way to run this without x installed? I have a headless dual xeon in the basement with Debian. I didn't install x when I set it up, I tried installing it(I have a local monitor and keyboard set up) and now it boots to a mouse cursor on a seemingly ok blueish screen, but no keyboard command or combos will bring up a login prompt...its like I don't have a desktop manager setup, although I selected gnome(I think, lol maybe I went with kde).

Anyhow, I can ssh into it fine still and it all works so its not crashed out....anywho...

I guess it needs the open gl to run-on the local machine so it can have stuff to send via your protocol wizardry, bit I thought I would ask just in case...

Cause in Los Angeles there are nice Craigslist deals on old servers...I got a rackmount(pain to run and loud...hence basement) server for under 100 bucks dual xeon at 3 gig...but it will take two dual cores up to 3.2 (o think, been a while) or better...two single core 3.7s xeon which I got on eBay for another 50...perfect dwarfcruncher and maybe I can play here and there o. My laptop at work or do tedious military stuff on my phone(with keyboard) when I am stuck riding in a truck for hours...

I guess I'll reinstall Linux with x this time sonit will all be set up...I'll lose 4 game servers that are set up on it(one at a time, I only run them when we play whichever game)

Tl:Dr. Is there a chance I can run this without xwindows on Linux....I guess no, but worth an ask

first thing i would try is to get rid of the space in the Dwarf Fortress directory. If its some sort of script, and someone somewhere did put it or carry over the " in the right place it could be looking for a file called Fortress in the directory called C:Users\Username\Desktop\Dwarf.  If it works without the space, maybe something else somewhere is off.

 actually on second thought

dont you set you Dwarf fortress directory in the sound sense settings? did you type in the directory location or browse to it?  maybe, if you typed it you need quotes around it all.

like this in the setup?

"C:Users\Username\Desktop\Dwarf Fortress"

NOT
C:Users\Username\Desktop\Dwarf Fortress

That's mighty nice of you

New news to me. Thanks! I'll fool with it later although it looks to be frustrating lol...still I am gonna fool with adventure mode while board at work...but comments say it doesn't save ,even if you syncniy with some sort of cloud drive.

Still cool they are trying

DF General Discussion / Re: Hardware and Game Performance
« on: December 18, 2015, 10:12:15 pm »
Single core performance will continue to improve.

Amds zen architecture will be out sometime next year. They CLAIM a baseline 40% increase in instructions per cycle.

The cpu industry has been milking development of more cores because they are afraid to hit the limit of smallness for copper, and thus speed(smaller wire traces have less capacitance). But they can't keep that adding cores forever, sooner or later they will focus on the speed of each core again.

I been watching this thread cause the people pushing for multithreading are amusing about how "easy" it would be. I believe I speak for alot of the silent majority that would rather Toady work in cool new features, than an extra year of devtime in between each round. Once this thing is 1.0, then optimization can be done.

As soon as the cpu boys focus on deving raw core speed again, and they will, it will improve drastically in a few gen of chips.

DF General Discussion / Re: How much has version .42 changed the game?
« on: December 17, 2015, 05:28:19 pm »
dwarf mode changes are huge. Semi random month generic breaks are now a fully fleshed Out need/want/ personality system. drinking booze..which has been a generic need until now is very specific need based on each dwarf.

Yeah, pretty big change to gameplay op.

Say it with a 5 dollar donation...

Classic apple bs...

Edit...I mean not making it easy to support older versions...not anything mifki has done

Super delayed double post!

Print screen? I am not super familiar with the keys cause I haven't had time to play for a bit...

The render range is really small for performance he stated, so my guess is its out of the render range.
