I want to start this off with two different statements. This is a question and or suggestion for modding. If you clicked on here thinking this was a mod involving Attack on Titan, I am sorry for misleading you as that was not my intent. Also, I am hoping this would be the correct place for this topic. Being with a limited amount of time on the internet, it is a possibility that I over looked a thread this topic would fit. If that is so I completely accept it being moved to said area on the forums. I considered putting this in the suggestions section but it appeared that this would not belong there as it is for gameplay suggestions and not mod suggestions.

I am not a what most people would call a huge anime fan, but when I watch Attack on Titan, I was hooked. For those of you who are not familiar with the show, I would like to copy and paste the wikipedia description "Over one hundred years prior to the beginning of the story, giant humanoid creatures called Titans (巨人 Kyojin) suddenly appeared and nearly wiped out humanity, devouring them without remorse or reason. What remains of humanity now resides within a country surrounded by three enormous concentric walls: the outermost is Wall Maria (ウォール・マリア Wōru Maria); the middle wall is Wall Rose (ウォール・ローゼ Wōru Rōze, pronounced like rosé) and the innermost is Wall Sheena (ウォール・シーナ Wōru Shīna, alt. "Wall Sina"). Inside these walls, humanity has lived in peace for one hundred years; many people growing up without ever having seen a Titan. This all changes when one day, a giant 60-meter (200 ft)-tall Titan mysteriously appears and breaches the outer wall of the Shiganshina district, a town at Wall Maria, allowing the smaller Titans to invade the district. . ." -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Titan

I, amung many others who has watched this show, are on the edge of our seats for the following season to come out. After I finished watching all 25 episodes (which is what there is as of this topic) I played Dwarf Fortress. I am still far from mastering the game, but I know enough to have had something click. Sans the grappling hooks the military use in the series, the setting could fall right in to dwarf fortress.

The walls used in the city can be translated easily into DF. The citizens, why not have them dwarves? Players could try to build a fortified city before any major titan attack could happen. Titans may wonder close enough to your fortress to take notice and attack. Honestly the potential would be endless for such a mod.

I did a search via google; "Dwarf fortress Attack on titan" and other similar entries. I was certain I would find several mods with this same idea. My search turned up only one article on redit with only a few posts. This has taken me by surprise. I want to know if there is a mod(s) out there incorporating Attack on Titan for Dwarf Fortress, or at least any in the works. Did this come across any other peoples mind?

Sorry I have been gone so long. I have been without internet for some time. Last time I was on a new version of Dwarf Fortress was released. I decided to wait to download it due to many bugs being present. Since then I am wondering if now is a good time to download this new version. Are the bugs ironed out enough to consider it worthy the time of a dwarf, or should I wait a bit longer. I am hoping to get an answer quickly (I have less than 15 minutes of internet left).

I just recently put some caged elk birds, troglodytes and a minotaur to be desinated as to go to my trade depot as a trade good but only my elk birds made it and some how the others got free. How did this happen? They were able to be placed in my stock pile without a problem. Its does not help that it auto saved due to the changing of the seasons right in the middle of this. So I also want to know if there is a way to remove auto save upon a new season as this is causing me some major headaches.

I have about 25 dwarfs on idle, 5 open burial sites and a rotten dwarf at the entrance of my fortress spewing miasma in the most traversed walkway on the map, so my dwarfs are going through it a lot. This seems to be a fairly common occurrence, but underground in a cavern. A dwarf will get killed and despite having idlers with hauling enabled and open burial sites they will let the corpse rot well after it forms miasma and a while after this they will finally decide to bury him or her. I am not sure what is going on. My version is 34.11

DF Gameplay Questions / What do you do with hostile caged beasts?
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:07:47 am »
So I caught my first creature attempting to kill my fortress; a Minotaur! But as it is being my first caged creature I am not sure how to properly interact with it such as moving it or disarming it (although I dont think it was carrying anything). Also, what should I do with man/beast/cow? I am considering using it as target practice but I dont want to kill it . . . yet. I am also curious as to how much it is worth trading being a semi megabeast (if it can be traded that is). I want to use for something productive as this is my first real fortress and it is still very much in its infancy (I havent even seen a single goblin yet).

DF Gameplay Questions / Where did I go wrong . . . with my wells
« on: July 17, 2014, 03:01:03 pm »
I attempted to experiment with making 2 wells. One near my hospital and one near my dining area. Being it was an experiment I sort of was expecting to mess up, and simply reloading and doing it again until I got it right. Trial and error. Then I waited too long and fun ensued. See I forgot it auto saves when a new season begins. So I am stuck with elven traders, 30+ migrants, snatchers and a few goblin thieves and a fortress just about ready to flood . . . Kind of in need of help. I can handle all the other fun just fine, but its the flooding that I am unsure how to control. Anyone want to take a look and see how I can circumvent this? Oh and its 34.11

Also I know fortresses are suppose to die at some point, but I feel like I should leave that to something else like a dragon or an army of goblins.

I am hoping this is a simple fix . . . I have just started a new fortress and have thus far three stockpiles; one for my refuse located outside, one for my seeds next to my farm and one for general use next to where my workshops will be located. Every time I change what goes in stock pile it changes it for them all. I am about to brutally vivisect my computer in frustration stumped as to how to fix this problem.

I am going about my first "real" fortress (not using a tutorial) but I am stuck on searching for a site to start. I am attempting to use the search option and have flux stone on, deep metal, ect on. The problem is at the locations displayed as suitable it will be missing one of the things I requested. Now I have been poking around on my map and have not noticed any location to display more than 4 things in the ground. I have come to the conclusion that either it will only show 4 items even if there is more or that there can only be 4 items in any given spot.

DF Gameplay Questions / Learning the ropes . . . with a knot in them
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:48:06 am »
I am still on my first fortress and learning the ropes. I am confused about a few aspects.

My animals are not going into pastures. When I designate an area as a pasture my animals are not leaving my dining area and are starving to death.

I have a TON of wood that is not being gathered. It is across a river and there is a bridge to go across, but none of my dwarfs are gathering anything. They are not forbidden. I have plenty of idle ones.

There are barrels in my refuse stock pile and I have no clue why. As far as I can tell there is no destination for the zone any such item. Could the wood problem be related?

On the starvation note, I had a horse die of it, which is how I noticed my animals not leaving. I want it to be butchered (am aware that the meat from it might be scarce at best) before it rots so I can get the hide.

Here is a link for my fortress:

I am curious about where everyone learned about DF, or how they came across it. Was your home randomly sieged by goblins and decided to look up online about how to deal with such a problem then a link about Dwarf Fortress caught your eye? Perhaps some migrants arrived mistaking your residents as a fortress? Do you suffer from too many kittens and thought the term "catplosion" wasn't termed yet and wanted to make sure? I also want to know how you ended up on the forums.

As for me; I was watching Fodablehuman videos on chezapocalypse. One video I came across was about Minecraft which I enjoy playing. But it was also about this game called "Dwarf Fortress". The more the video talked about this game the more I became intrigued. The very last thing that convinced me to play it was the fact it was free.

I tried the game out and needless to say I was over my head. I had no clue how to even start playing the game. So I found some video tutorials and followed along. It got me a good start. But one thing led to another and in the grand scheme of things what took place in the video was different from what was happening. For instance, the video tutorial showed how to make a well to a brook. I had no such luck being in a swamp with frozen pounds. Even if they did thaw the water was stagnant which is bad news. Another example in the video there was a migration wave of about 12 or so . . . I got 47. At the time I was supplemented looking things up on the wiki to answer some of my questions. Some I could not find. I looked for a forum and ended up here. Still have yet to ask the questions though . . . whoops. Thinking about uploading my fortress as well to see if I am doing ok or if there are things I can improve on.

I want to start this off by saying that this is not a thread to suggest ideas. I want a "It would be so cool if . . . " kind of thread, if that make sense. For example (albeit bad examples) something along the lines of "If I could make anything, it would be so cool if jaws was in the game! he could eat your dwarfs if they get too close to the water!" or "I would love to see aliens, it would be so absurd that its awesome".

What would I like to see? I would love to see dinosaurs! Ya, they dont exactly go along with the theme exactly, but still. "velociraptor1 bites dwarf 1 in the arm, the arm severed and has flown in an arc. velociraptor2 scratches Dwarf 1's neck, severing an artery. velociraptor3 bites Dwarf 1's right foot and severs it. Veleorapter 4 has intellectual discussion with velocorapter 5 about the recent New York Times article regarding Iceland's economy." mauled to death by velociraptors. OMG MOST AWESOME DEATH!

Pffft, forget adamant armor; how about a dwarf or 2 with Trex leather armor. Win

How about goblins Flintstone siege you riding all different manors of dinosaurs. "guys, I know we are under siege right now by dinosaurs and goblins, and dieing by bee-lining straight to the beer and beating up Yoshi sounds enticing, but . . . they decided to surround our alchol stash with hundreds of compies . . . they have a sick sense of humor." Nice!

What would you guys like to see?

I got board and decided to do some experimenting in object testing arena. I put all "man" creatures (like mantis man, whale man, ect) together in an area to see which one would win in an all out fight. I did the same for all giant versions of creatures as well. I found the results both interesting and informative.

So who won? Well as it turns out for the man version of all creatures it was *drum roll* . . . Elephant seal man! But was this a fluke? No. I tested 2 more times and on all of these tests the winner was indeed Elephant seal man.

As for the giants, it seemed like there were more types available. I placed all together, multiple times. The result of this was . . . Giant elephant seal! It was a good fight to. At first I thought the giant cave spider was going to win since it webbed EVERYTHING and proceeded to kill systematically kill them. But then it was just it and the giant elephant seal left, stuck in the web, struggling. But as it turns out, that little seal won . . . erm big seal, well you know.

Turns out that as far as creatures go, elephant seals are BA! Do not underestimate them. Now to see if an elephant seal man can beat a giant elephant seal.

DF Gameplay Questions / What is the hierarchy of weapon and armor?
« on: June 30, 2014, 03:02:54 am »
Hiya! I am a newbie to DF (just over a week into the game) and surprise, surprise; my first topic on the forum is requesting help. Like many newbies there is many features overwhelming me within the vast game of DF. Over all however I am enjoying the game.

Currently I am experimenting with adventure mode. I created a world with the most treacherous of options. LOTS of savagery, and LOTS of forgotten beasts. I gathered many would be adventures to my aid and traveled to the most savage of areas I could find. Fun then ensued. But now my character has found a weapon shop. I thought it was a good time to replace my starting sword with something better . . . then the confusion happened. MANY swords to chose from. No way to my knowledge to figure out which of these is better or worse. Is a silver longsword better than a steel longsword? Is bismuth bronze as good as bronze? I was just a bit overwhlmed to say the least. I did not want to sell my current weapon and end up with something worse for. I also thought what of armor?

I looked online for a list of which types of swords are better. All I could rely find is lists of materials these weapons could be made out of. They may list density, but would that mean its better than something that ways less? I would imagine that a blunt weapon such as a hammer or mace would be better if it is heavier, but then what would be the purpose of making it out of a higher grade of metal? I of course know the basics, such as bronze would be better than copper. But where would the aforementioned silver lie? What about "fine" crafted items and other grades?

So, anyone happen to know where I could find a list or similar page detailing which is better or worse? It would rely help me on my adventures.
