I was pretty much right there with you, (and I'm a huge advocate for "No, BaByCrUsHeR6969, dwarves don't like arenas, or fighting outside, or slavery, just read the raws and look at your suffering dwarves!",) until:

If anything, I think Toady should make it more difficult to join this forum--perhaps only people who pledge on Patreon could be allowed in, for example, or he could spend some of the money from the game's budget to hire goblin cosplayers to besiege your house in real life and only those who survive may have an account.

To which I say, "By Armok! Gatekeeping, from someone with a 2019 created account? What have we come to! Better to delete all accounts created after August 1st, 2014!" (Quit clicking my account summary! Rude!)

Although there is something to this goblin cosplayer idea, I admit! I mean, I have swords, doesn't everyone?

Ironically, Toady's judicious use of censorship is the reason why so many people believe the bay12 forums don't require censorship.

Can vouch. I reported a horrible thread about a week ago when Toady was fully busy with other stuff, but it was still nuked in about an hour, not locked, just gone.

This could be a rather useful and interesting mechanic to add, despite the whiners on Reddit and Steam.

I don't spend a lot of time defending reddit, but while the small handful of bad on this topic in /r/dwarffortress has been bad, the little bit of it that was public was promptly heavily downvoted, and much mockery ensued. What I complained about above was mostly modmail & PMs. Really /r/dwarffortress is still "small hobby reddit," otherwise known as "good reddit," even at ~80k subscribers. The 4channers keep saying reddit's been "ruined by sjw's," so maybe they've given up on it. We can only hope.

I'm actually pretty impressed, tbh, I expected worse, but no one even started an independent "discussion post" on the topic. I was of course accused of censoring discussion posts anyway. eyeroll

"I've never played, but from the three PCGamer articles I skimmed over the past decade. . .."

This is the tweet they are mad over.
[tweet imgur link]

And no one is posting it alongside their complaints they ckeep saying *redacted* because once anyone reads that they will see how silly the outrage is.

Alas I'm well aware that's what they're upset about now (I mod the /r/dwarffortress subreddit, for my sins, apparently, and I wouldn't even be mad if this comment got removed if I showed you some of my modmail screenshots over that tweet,) but this thread of course predates that tweet and the Steam forum was already nonsense.

It's a shame that apparently you can't turn off a Steam forum, even for a non-existing game.

What I think happened with Steam is Kitfox did not moderate it adequately so Steam's community mods stepped in. They're invariably shit and probably overstepped the line.

I have reason to believe this is what's going on.

Sorry if this post was a bit doom and gloom Toady, but I just wanted to share some brief fiscal talk while you were on the topic, not that im a expert or anything but i guess next time you meet up it'll give you some points to raise and check over.

Maybe not the optimal place for it given we're getting an open conversation between the dev who wants to add features we all want and the utility modder who's actually made those feature possible currently.

The stockpiles with the little type designation icon in the corner make me unreasonably happy, cheers!

I hope that makes the final cut (and that someone steals the idea and puts it in Phoebus over the weekend! Come on guys!)

I strongly encourage people to look at Toady's copious "Steam Dwarf Fortress" answers in at least the two reddit AMAs before asking "fresh" FotF questions that have likely been covered many times over. Kitfox Games's community director Victoria, Toady's co-editor and Kitfox founder Tanya X. Short, Meph, Mayday, and ThreeToe (via Toady) are all in there too, answering questions. There's even a bonus Scamps pic!

So, nothing profound, but I've ended up working alongside a couple of the Kitfox people quite a lot the last couple days, helping with the AMAs, the /r/dwarffortress announcement thread (linked upthread,) catching their community person up a little with the DF community, etc.

They seem like nice folks, and I'm a suspicious dude who's not getting paid.

I have a number of real concerns about the project, but not about Kitfox at this point. By way of example, if you take a look at that reddit announcement thread, you'll note I quoted and linked Bay12's Patreon and PayPal four separate times, and point out at least a couple of those times the links give Bay12 more money than buying the game.

I didn't write any of those, they're straight from from the media release. When asked in reddit posts and on the new official DF Discord, they consistently said the same, that the best way to get money to Toady is PayPal, followed by Patreon (TECHNICALLY it's mailing him a money order, but close enough.) I think Tanya cares about Toady, and I think the others have caught it as well. At the very least so far they're doing a crap job of being greedy about it, and let's face it, probably most of us here are donating several times over the cost of the game each year anyway.

Here are the press release sheets, for as long as they're up, and for what they're worth. I will mention they took the concerns of some of the people who got the early materials and adjusted them to do a better job of addressing things. I don't think there's anything there that isn't widely known at this point.

mifki's definitely allowed a whole period of creativity to flourish that would have been impossible without their work!

Now if we're REALLY lucky, they won't consider TWBT deprecated until there's an actual replacement!

*shudder*

Officially the wisest post in this thread.

Can confirm, Meph is very active over on reddit, often volunteering to answer newbie questions when he's not walking people through tileset issues or gloating about mysterious whatevers.

DF General Discussion / Scamps Adams Turns Ten! Beware his baleful gaze!

I didn't see this announced here, and not everyone has Twitter.

If you're unaware of Scamps, I recommend his wiki entry:

Last I heard of Scamps, he was pursuing a private war against the Linux version. Beware!

I don't have additional data or explanations for the various community metrics.  The forum numbers don't feel *tremendously* different.  The 500-700 ranges for Januarys from 2012 to 2019 are pretty consistent; it has dropped a bit, and sometimes it dips into the 300s nowadays, but we had a 739 today, so I really have no idea.  The latest version downloads are currently around 60000 a month, and that's been consistent for the last five months according to these stats.  I don't have the older numbers on hand, but it doesn't strike me as different from what I've seen (and I have no idea how many of those downloads are "real".)

This topic has come up multiple times recently on the /r/dwarffortress subreddit, for some reason, people all a-panic that the Bay12Forum/Dwarf Fortress community is dying. I wonder what the origin of the concern is.

On the reddit side, which I can speak for as one of the moderators with access to usage numbers, our ~74k members and other unsubscribed readers are generating ~70k unique visitors and 601k to 1M+ page views per month, with a substantial positive subscription rate. They don't give us year over year data, only the previous year, but it doesn't look like a weakening community to me.
