Life Advice / Coding for absolute beginners?
« on: September 11, 2016, 07:33:10 am »
Hello Community

I really want to learn how to code (maybe for a little ascii game or so), but i've no idea where to start.
What programming language is the best to beginn with? C sharp, C++ or python?
Those game creation systems like Gamemaker seem handy. And what about Unity?
I've read that the language isn't very important, but to be spoilt for choice doesn't make things easier.

I'm thankful for a little bit of suggestions and guidance.

30 years father here. I have also four old Dogs. I'm afraid I can't program a single line. Livin in Europa. Does that count as normal?

I'm a married female in my 60s.  My male husband is in his 70s.  We were both chemists before we retired.  I play DF but my husband does not.  His vision isn't very good and he has trouble seeing the little letters.  He plays turn-based military strategy games (The Operational Art of War, for example), and sometimes real-time action games (Dungeon Siege, for example).  We use gaming rigs from Alienware.  We just bought a PS4 and are awaiting delivery of Diablo 3.  We played the original game together and are hoping we can play this one with more enjoyment.  Playing the original on our home network led to some nasty situations due to lag, as in I used to fill him with arrows and he used to electrocute me.  But we are willing to try again.  *grin*

He has two living children, six living grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.  We have two cats, who rule the house, as it should be.  We live far enough away from all of both of our families that our time is our own.

We can both program, although it has been a decade or more since I programmed for a living.  We don't program anymore because we are too lazy.

So are we normal?  Probably not, but who cares?
Wow. What a lovely post. Thanks for brighten my day!

For the creature to appear, you need to generate a new world based on those raws.
That was it. Thank you!

Yes it is. An Adventurer only race may be created, and can be set up so that the only time they exist is when they are created in Adventure Mode.

What you will need to do, if you are simply creating a copy of a pre-existing creature, is change the creature's ID, add in the tokens [NO_EAT] and [NO_DRINK] pretty much anywhere in the raw definitions, and if they are not playable as an outsider normally, then add [OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE].

To change the ID, change the token [CREATURE:X] into anything that is not currently used.

The standard creatures such as Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Goblins are found in creature_standard.txt

Another alternative is to create an Adventurer-only reaction that creates a substance that will give your Adventurer a syndrome that will remove hunger and thirst.

Okay, I tried and failed.

I copied all the human code, insert it the bottom and changed the name but it didn't appear in the game.

Redcolored what I changed:

Thank you, BlackFlyme. Let's see if I can make it work. ^^

I love this game. Never played such amazing physicbased combat. Sadly, there is still no Minimap for Dungeon-Mode...

Here a little montagevideo I made, from the last version:

I've never tried to deal with modding so please be patient with me (and my way of writing).

I don't want to suffer from hunger and thirst in adventure mode, but without altering neither the worldgeneration nor the Fortress Mode. So my question is, how do you exactly create (respectively copy) a race, remove the the hunger and thirst. The copied race should be keept out of world generation, since only the player should generate it by creating a character in adventure mode. Is that even possible?

Did you watch the demo yet?http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023372/Practices-in-Procedural

It's a tool to be used as part of the next arc (on magic and npc artifact creation) to procedurally introduce magic into world generation (and cosmic egg shells, alternate planes and other stuff).

When Toady says it creates civilizations he means it creates the mythological beginnings of each of the races rather than just plonking them down with no explanation in a random spot of the world at the start of known history. Landforms are something to do with cosmic eggshell fragments. Um....
I read about the demo. I was looking for it, but didn't find it. Going to watch it immediately.
Thank you very much, Shonai_Dweller. Makes much more sense now!

Referring to the Demo: Tarn is the coolest programmer i've ever seen hehehe.

DF General Discussion / Myth Generator: I don't get it
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:43:13 am »
May some one explain to me, what the myth generator is and how it affects the gameplay? Can we look it up on the legends mode?
I have a very rough idea. Sorry if that have been asked before, but all I read feels very vague.

We’ve got this prototype myths generator that does more or less what we need. It creates the civilizations, it has some types of magic systems, and that’s really what we wanted to get out of it. Makes some kind of landforms.
Whe had creation of civs and landforms already, didn't we?
Whats about the magic?

Is it possible to use workshops yet? If so, how?

DF General Discussion / Workorder limit?
« on: February 19, 2016, 07:09:26 am »
Whats the reason for the workorder limitation? Of course you can make more items than that by making another workorder, but isn't it a unnecessary circumstance?
