Pathfinding, canceled jobs, and more pathfinding is known to cause lag. Ever thing you've listed is a cause of Job cancels and Extra pathfinding.

Known bug where Idle dwarves gain experience from conversing while the game is paused and you designate areas to be mined (with the mouse)

You can either smelt or make it into strands. Making strands is only for clothing, and adamantine clothing rots like any other clothes. So extracting metal strands is useless any way you put it, bugged or not.

It depends how fast Df runs on your computer, it it's too slow, you might want to change [KEY_HOLD_MS:150] to something like [KEY_HOLD_MS:350] in init.txt.

We need to have bigger worlds so make up for modded populations and stuff. Maybe it would scale to the "Max" (As the game determines with the info given by the raws) amount of population.

10k-20k max (alive) people in a world would allow it to be the same size.
20k-100k would make the world about two or three times larger.
100k+ would just go with some algorithm. Over 100k the world would add maybe 10 Region Tiles onto the X and Y of the world for every 5k more population.

Maybe a stupid suggestion.
