You got off quite lucky.
Expect them to return, and in greater numbers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Squad Organization System
« on: May 04, 2017, 08:26:10 pm »Having to change the names of every single dwarf in the lineage when only a single dwarf dies seems like a lot of micro for little reward.
I rarely have huge militaries, but if I have more than a few squads I name them according to their weapon of choice and number (unless they earn a more interesting squad name.) So Spears 1 would be my oldest and most proficient squad, while Spears 4 would probably be a lot of recruits and one or two teachers. If a dwarf dies in Spears 1, I promote the most experienced of Spears 2 and fill the resulting gap from Spears 3. It's a lot fewer keypresses to move dwarfs around than it is to individually rename them.
I do like the title of "Swordmother". Or like "Spearchild," but "Axegrandchild" isn't quite as evocative. . .
Dwarf Fortress is all about micromanagement. I mean, yea you can macro the micro, and certainly everyone has their own level of depth that they prefer. I have always thought the real skill in DF was mastering the game to the extent that you could choose which level of depth you wanted.
The easiest part of the game is realizing that you can wall yourself in with some plump helmet farms and never deal with the outside world again.

Install about 10 bartenders and 10 performers. This will end anyone without a truly dwarven constitution and be entirely bloodless (although there will be massive amounts of vomit).

DF General Discussion / Re: How to necromance
« on: April 23, 2017, 11:05:58 am »Lies. You can't.They roll slowly. It's creepier that way.You have to become the were beast first.
On a related note, can you become both a vampire and a werebeast? I want to be a vampiric necromantic weresheep.Code: [Select][IT_CANNOT_HAVE_SYNDROME_CLASS:WERECURSE]
[IT_CANNOT_HAVE_SYNDROME_CLASS:VAMPCURSE]
You have to become the vampire or werebeast before becoming the necromancer. I do it on all my adventurers that live long enough.
Although I see I missread his question -_-

WWUD if she were ported into Nethack?
Drink until vomiting or death achieved.
WWUD if forced to live a life of sub-mediocrity?

If you have are setting up multiple magma forges, and wait until after you fill the magma troughs to put grates over them, inevitably someone will drop a sock in the magma and create a splash that incinerates themselves and anyone near them.

I think it would be cool if you could chain captives to pumps and mills and make them work for the fort.

« on: March 26, 2017, 11:25:19 pm »
Another trick I have found useful if there are any rivers on your map, build a single tile wide ramp across them and then place cage traps on them. Animals wanting to cross the river will be forced to move over the trap.

Don't artifacts just burn forever?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Using a Waterfall and Floor Grates to Catch Fish
« on: March 05, 2017, 06:35:45 pm »I built the grates above the ice but where the waterfall would be, because I'd imagine the way it would work is the fish smash into the grates instead of continuing in the water, killing them. The ice wasn't frozen in the position of the waterfall, there was nothing there. So far, there has been some blood, but a blacksmith DID go missing the day the ice froze. I may have built it wrong, so I'm going to continue building it next winter. Fish are in the river.
I like to build a private pier only accessible from the sheer cliff face when I have waterfalls available. My fishermen can go out and fish in relative safety, and in winter I can just lock the door and pull a lever to raise a small drawbridge to seal it off.
