Scholars will make discoveries and take apprentices. People will still tell stories of historical events in the taverns. So far the only visitors to Archcrystal's tavern are warriors who look to relax in the tavern and listen to stories.

You won't be able to write books because the materials to make them are not in the raws. I think it was NCommander who was able to dfhack them in during Doomforests but not sure what that will do the stability of the fortress so I haven't tried.

Also you will no longer be able to create instruments, even the old kind in a 40.24 -> 40.35 fortress so you're SOL if you get mandates for them. And dances, poetry, music won't exist in any meaningful way so bards and performance troupes do not form that I'm aware of.

Scholars do not visit your library from elsewhere either as you cannot create scrolls, books, bookcases, etc.

Suggestion: you should make a comic book out of this story when it's over. Seriously, I would buy it. Kickstart it.

Heh, maybe I should team up with evicted Saint from The Littlest Cheesemaker. :)
Update coming soon, just waiting for a couple projects to complete.

"Died from Suffocation" is often from a spinal injury as well. My guess is they are getting injured spines from cave ins and then dying from suffocation shortly afterwards.

Thanks! I'm on it, and fortunately I hadn't turned on the magma pumps yet  8)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves sparring through constructed walls
« on: July 06, 2017, 04:14:17 pm »
I've noticed since I've moved my training barracks up into a constructed tower above ground that occasionally the sparring dwarves will spar through the wall and end up outside the tower. Fortunately it's only a 2 level drop, but it could be more if they ever go through the wall above the river canyon. It happens at a specific sparring event like this when they tangle together after a charge:

Has anyone else experienced this? And if I double up the walls making them 2 tiles thick will that solve the problem?

I'll try to get a good representation of it soon in Armok vision. But since it goes through many stone layers I'm not sure if it will work or not

As was said above Cave Dragons work great if you can catch and tame one as they are also immune to the smoke effects as well as the fire.

Another option is to use a 3X3 staircase at the end of a hallway. Position your melee dwarves one level above on the staircase that way the FB won't see them until it is on the stairs and your melee dwarves should all get a first strike in before the FB can do anything. That's enough to kill it most often as they are very fragile and can't take more than a few hits.

I'd say so, though I've never tried it. Worth a shot.

Mega beasts will cause any soldier on active duty or caravan member to automatically attack them as soon as they see them.

Regarding retire/unretire. You can always make a backup. The scattering from containers and of living beings is annoying, indeed, but I do know it definitely benefits region-pops and FPS (extreme example: Sealed bloodyhells going from 10-11 to 210 fps) due reseting baseline traversable surfaces. Normal, non-sealed still got large gains, though not quite that much.)

Also, thought someone would have linked you that dfhack civ position fix by now. Alas, I don't know where it is or how to do it, but I recall others mentioning its' existence many months ago. Still, none of the visitors would use the rooms normally anyway - those are just for long-term residents.

I briefly forgot about the clouds and wondered why not "Outside/Above Ground". How often do you get them, anyway, once a year or so? Dunno if they would be any easier to avoid by building roof first, then walls.

Don't think I've ever seen a fished lungfish, but if you haven't fished the river yet. As for breaking the dam, the sensible part of me says to lower a bridge/open floodgates. The dramatic one says cave-in on top of the building blocking it.

Thanks! I might just try to clone the save and retire/unretire if nothing else then just to see what happens. The clouds come about once a month and cover at least a quarter of the map as they move so they're pretty dangerous. Fortunately they usually appear at the edge of the map and move across so it gives me time to get the dwarves inside because the tower is more or less in the middle. Once in a while though they can appear real close to the construction zone out of nowhere which makes things FUN!

Apparently you can fish lungfish according to the wiki. Dam is broken and the water flows!

Edit: This is generally how close the clouds come:

Well, that treefarm and huge open space is going to drop your FPS like an apple. Forbid logs before a caravan comes for emergency resources?

So far the fps has remained stable with 2 full layers dug out. I find with this fortress the fps killing issues are more dwarf and population related than anything else. I mean I do have a giant hole from the surface straight to hell and 140 floor, 20 block diameter constructed glass tower coming up through it. I'd say if anything killed fps more it's probably that. :)

And every time I look at your underworld city, it is stunning. But shake my memory, who rests in these beds?

Thanks! It's getting there. Those are the rented rooms for the tavern. None of the visitors ever use them because I think it has something to do with that not being able to happen with a 40.24 fort transferred to 43.05. But I still like having them.

The religious devotion to lost art of artifacts....I wonder, does retire-unretire affect artifact cap? Probably not, but it's worth a thought, since it kinda messes with them.

For a dwarven pantheon you know by heart....the temples look quite alike, more like classrooms. Or indoor churches, perhaps. I thought they were citizens' barracks at first, unfortunately.

I'd be scared to retire/unretire, because it doesn't really keep track of where the demons are so they might re appear inside the fortress. Also, I think they might lose the training on the Cave Dragons and Hydras. Not to mention all of the megabeasts we have caged could suddenly be freed.
As for the churches, those are for the main gods that most of the dwarves worship so there's some uniformity there, plus I went for utility as I want them all praying in generally the same space so I can track them more easily. The less worshiped gods like Megob of Deformity I'm going to do something more fun with.

It took me a bit to realize, but...You're building/built a tower around natural waterfall, in evil husking weather. I don't think anybody has ever done the first, even without the second. Artificial waterfalls in towers? Oh, they're plentiful. Natural ones? Novel centuries-long plan. Though the river must be empty of fish by now.

Yeah, and its pretty hard, haha. Lots of burrows and alerts help with the clouds. But also I loved the idea of the tower coming through the waterfall and digging out the river bed and reconstructing it with glass. The entrance will have ramps that lead down around the waterfall which will look pretty cool. Lots of lungfish still but not sure if they can be caught by fisherdwarves.

Getting ready now to break the dam on the second river and let the waterfall flow.

I'm already working on a PDF for Archcrystal so don't worry about that one.

Thanks for following! Currently running into a problem with trees not regrowing fast enough to make pearlash so I'm clearing out 4 complete levels below the first cavern layer and channelling them out. The plan is to drain the cavern lake/river above it into large reservoirs and then flood the bottom cleared layer using water pressure to make a gigantic underground tree farm.

You mean we're not going to get an awesome detailed post about us breaching the surface?  Sorry I was really looking forward to that  :(

Heh, I did already, check the previous page. :)
I'll do more on them building on the surface soon though

Mostly:

"Cloud of wicked soot! Sound the civilian alarm. Get everyone inside!"

"Why is Olin walking through the jungle to the opposite entrance?"

"Sigh, someone tell Olin's 34 brothers and sisters not to touch his corpse when they bury him."

"Oh look another baby."
