DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Haunted Glacier
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:35:52 pm »
I wanted to give myself a challenge, so I embarked on a haunted glacier with a necromancer tower 3 spaces away and a goblin fortress 5 spaces away. I'd never played on an evil biome or a glacier before so it's all pretty new challenge wise.

We dug in quickly to avoid the prowling undead ice wolves and after the first wave of migrants managed to slip undetected into the fortress we had to lock ourselves in. The first caravan came, and subsequently got slaughtered by the undead animals and re-animated by the evil terrain. Now there's a zombie horde hanging around the front entrance that every migrant wave gets killed by and re-animated.

My question is, do we resign ourselves to underground and in-breeding? Or is there a way to get migrants inside that I'm not thinking of? I'm already up to 32 engraved slabs and I'm thinking I'm going to have a very large tomb.

I think I know why they disengaged every so often. Every once in a while on of the military dwarves would become horrified after watching one of the were elephants limbs get gooified by a warhammer or severed (and probably even more horrifed at watching it grow back immediately). They would flee towards the fortress stairs as it was in the general opposite direction of the were elephant. I'm guessing that this is when they went for drinks. Probably to calm their nerves.

Sorry for the title, I couldn't resist.

So, I started a 40.05 fort up recently and about 2 years in a Were Elephant shows up. He zipped towards a fisher dwarf and one-shotted him before turning back into a goblin and quickly leaving - and I mean quickly. So fine, I had a green military anyways.

So about a year later, I have two pretty decent squads of hammer and spear dwarves clad in steel for the most part, when he shows up again. So, great, I feel like we're reasonably ready for him and order the two squads to attack and unpause the game. I have never seen something move so fast. The Were Elephant sped across the entire map in literally 6 seconds to my fort's entrance where he promptly exploded a butchery workshop. He then raced inside where my squads began to engage him as my barracks is, of course, near the entrance. I can only imagine what it looked like to the dwarves as a red-eyed, frothing, monstrous elephant of insanity advanced on them at about 100 miles per hour through the wide stone entrance.

I was tense with anticipation at this point getting ready to watch the fight as they engaged each other. The dwarves quickly surrounded the beast and had it pinned up against the wall. The fight continued for a about a minute before I decided to check the report to see what was happening. Fortunately, either my squads were fantastic dodgers, or the were elephant was terribly unlucky in its strikes as it failed to hit any of them once. The dwarves on the other hand were fracturing legs and bones with their war hammers left and right, even exploding some of the beasts body parts into gore. But it was regenerating faster than they could inflict the damage, even parts that were severed or crushed.

On and on the fight went for about a week horrifying any kittens that came near them. The dwarves who were fighting actually started taking breaks to go drink some alcohol and then come back to the fight which was pretty amusing. Finally, after 10 days of fighting, the were elephant turned back into a goblin and ran lightning fast to the edge of the map, where a hunter shot him in the head with a single bolt.

So ended the were elephant rampage.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarves and Their Traps

Dwarves will be caged if they fall asleep or unconscious on a cage trap, or if a spider spins a web on the trap and they step in it.

Sounds like your little guy was tuckered out  :)

I had heard of that, and thought about it, but I'm skeptical in this case because it was the first trap in a row of about 40.  I suppose it could just be the odds, but it made my eyes narrow dubiously.

Hello everyone. Just stared playing Dwarf Fortress about 4 months ago, and I'm having a fantastic time. After a few failed forts in Version 34, I managed to get a fairly mature 30 year fort going.

After waiting a while, I decided to download the new 40.03 version and got a decent 3 year fort running. Loving all the new stuff, and I found this version actually ran a little quicker even with some of the dwarves climbing up trees to get to things.

In any case, my broker drowned one fine spring day while attempting to retrieve a merchant that had dehydrated in a tree. I wasn't overly concerned, and I quickly replaced him with another who had an appraisal skill. A human caravan arrived shortly afterwards so I had Urist McBroker stop his wood burning and go trade with them at the Depot. Things went well and he left after the trade was completed to return to the fort. Then, bam, he's suddenly caged. I look and he's set off one of our cage traps at the entrance, and I simply thought, hey they can accidentally set off their own traps now, that's actually kind of neat, maybe there's a 0.01% chance of stumbling into one. So, my mechanic dutifully retrieves the cage and stores it in the animal stockpile. I had tried assigning the poor prisoner to another cage or a pit with no success, as he didn't display in the list of creatures to put into any of these. I was in the middle of setting up a chain for him to go to when I experienced my first crash. No biggie, as I'll just go back to my most recent save, but just wanted to share in case anyone else has experienced this. Cheers!
