DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin nobles
« on: August 04, 2014, 07:59:45 am »
Edit: What bugs me about the current situation is not the fact that you have some goblins in your civ but that - if the situation amongst nobles is of any indication - your dwarfen civs are either predominantly populated by goblins or they have a tendency to assign goblins as their nobles (perhaps a wise choice considering a nobles propensity to meet an unfortunate accident).
Going by my experience it is now the rule to have more goblin nobles rather than the exception.

Lol, this makes perfect sense. They finally get the hint that no one likes them, so put up a patsy to take the punishment.

The solution is actually to increase politicial instability in settlements and civilizations in general.  Not only does does this make for a more entertaining read through the legends, it also keeps down the number of goblin rulers because they will tend to be assasinated, executed or sent into exile like everyone else.

Instead of just increases political instability, just make them much less happy if there is a noble of a different race? That would be even more fun in fortress mode. Look through your dwarves, and half have bad thoughts because their king is a goblin.

Zombies showed up way too early, right after the first migrant wave of 3 dwarfs, and are hanging around deterring any more migrants. Also have an aquifer, and I've lost two picks with miners so far. Basically watching my population drop slowly while I try to make the best of it, but I am quantum creating steel, so at some point I will charge with steel clad dwarves. Oh, and I somehow ended up with 4 pieces of stone. Two for slabs for miners than froze to death, one for a mechanism for a well, and the final stone is probably the most precious thing in the fortress. It could be anything I could end up needing, but it's the last.

Fun way to start an attempt at not using traps or doors/bridges to protect the fortress. I kind of feel like the Roanoke Island colony, and I didn't really have to try and make it like that, it just happened. I'm amazed it's lasted as long as it has. This would be a fun fortress to have the mod where I could make robots to do my work for me. The dwarves would eventually die out and it would be all machines.

I'm trying not to think really hard how to fix my situation, it's kind of fun just hanging on with 8 7 dwarves working and zombies on the border. The first real goblin attach will be the end of it though. Might just build a wall at the entrance and go deep, or at least z-2 to the aquifer, lol. It doesn't take much room to entertain 7 dwarves.

Then I suggest seeking an alliance with ants. Ants should have little love for anteaters.
If they are not against us, they're for us, right?

Huh. I never knew that giant anteaters have panda heads on their forelimbs.

Wow. Just wow. I had to. like. go check the picture on the website to make sure you didn't photoshop that.

You could try modding milk to give a temporary [NO_FEAR] flag maybe. Getting your dwarfs to drink it would be hard.

I thought that was the whole point of dwarves boozing up? They couldn't handle day to day, so they drank them selves into a stupor, grabbed a pick axe, and started beating on that warm rock because some unforseen force told them to? Maybe dwarves should start with a mediocre discipline level, and then it degrade if they live in posh quarters/don't see much trauma. If there is a lack of booze in the fort, they turn into the blubbering fools we are experiencing right now.

Not that I'm complaining, it's kind of funny. Not very dwarfy, but funny, in a killer carp way. Somehow, dwarves have turned into the very elves they hate for a few generations. Scared of the trees' retaliation, and scared of anything that even resembles blood or could possibly be dangerous. Eventually Toady will get it straightened out and dwarves will have realized the error of their ways and grew their backbones again. Or just think of it as Armok drank a little too much and had a few too many dares. The worlds a little hectic, but once he sobers up and the hangover passes, he'll straighten everything out. Just part of the continuing narrative of Dwarf Fortress. Every new world spawned is the universe being recreated, and each new version adds some variety.

No, really.

Dwarf fortress has gotten so lifelike I think Toady has broken the plane between the worlds. I didn't even know they were aggressive in real life. Or dangerous. Next thing you know, Carp will be dragging people into the rivers and drowning them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves not gathering outdoor plants
« on: July 26, 2014, 06:56:49 am »
How many plant did you designate to be picked, and what is the skill of your gatherer? A lot of the time, an unskilled gatherer will not get anything, if I'm not mistaken.

Try checking out your kitchen stocks. Hit Z and then go over to kitchen and see if there are any new plants that they picked and you just can't find. You also have to turn cooking and brewing off of every new thing or it will get used up.

Yeah, you almost have to make sure your embark will have some fun now. I've embarked in a location at war with elves, and by a tower and several goblin pits. My last fort saw one invasion and then nothing. My miner finally drowned after a few years, and he had the only coffin the whole time. The one invasion ran away when my hammerdwarves showed up on the ramparts.

Trying a new play style, no doors or bridges. All passageways will be blocked by dwarf bodies when the sieges come. Also embarked beside 5 goblin sites and a tower, but the tower is marked as a dwarf tower.

Aquifer has me limited to the very top layer of a hill, and trees keep randomly? collapsing, knocking holes in the roof. I haven't dug any recently because my miner is currently desperately trying to learn to swim before he drowns in the aquifer I was digging into, so I'm not sure why the trees are collapsing, but he's up to level 4 swimmer now, lol. If you chop down a tree at ground level, does it now collapse and give a message? Also have had several people knocked out, which has never happened before.

LONG LIVE THE OUTPOST OF YAWNBOATS! Yeah, that doesn't really have a good ring to it.

Yeah, I get some covered up, same as when I'm trying to plant, and also I have a few that black out randomly. Not sure what they are.

IIRC, I can brew and cook them, just can't see what they are, and I only have one.  The other random ones I don't remember what I could do with them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Embarking on an army
« on: July 24, 2014, 10:59:56 am »
Has anybody had any luck embarking on a location that an army happens to be passing through? Your seven dwarves and their god - the wagon - start looking around and notice an army of dwarves fresh from conquest, just passing through.

And can an army just pass through your site after you embark? Bandits can, but it means they are attacking you, but what about your civ's army's coming through? They are moving around the world as you build your fortress now, right?

Too bad you couldn't find the regular roads used by armies, and park your embark on it. I kind of miss having regular sieges without having to go and try to find somewhere fun. I've only lost one dwarf to drowning, and killed one goblin in a year and half. Going to have to start a war with the humans or elves to get some fun going.

I just found a cave with a pathway to the caverns. Down in the caverns, I found an ettin, who promptly fled. I ran after him and gave him a few hits with my axe. The I proceeded to hit him with a necromancer's book I got earlier (the zombies in this tower were surprisingly friendly, I only had to kill ten of them, the rest just did not care). While beating the crap out of the ettin, I had a nice talk with him. I even offered him the position as lord of a small dark pit, which he gladly accepted. This was followed by horrified screams on the ettin's side, not even my comment about the weather ("At least it doesn't rain down here") could cheer him up. He eventually bled to death.

I love DF. You can tell that someone has played it a lot by the way they can make a comment like this and act all nonchalant about it.

not even my comment could cheer him up. He eventually bled to death.
I love it. I hope I never get tired of laughing at stuff like this.
