DF Modding / Re: !!SCIENCE!! - Working Animal Caretakers!
« on: April 23, 2015, 05:28:39 pm »
Nice work! I didn't even know that was what an animal caretaker was supposed to do :P

It's a shame Toady doesn't just fix things like this. It seems like he isn't even aware of most of them. He's focused on the future, new features, etc. Which is admirable, because it's easy to lose focus and forward progress when working on a game, but not always the greatest for playability.

Heh, I never really processed that this would be a major release until fairly recently (the devlog sounded like some medium-sized stuff until I realized what he was doing with all the randomized stuffs.)

273
Okay, thanks. Good to know! Think I'll just take this as a practice run then, because I need those libraries, and what's a library without its art?

274
I thought I saw a topic about this earlier, but I couldn't find it. Not on the homepage or FotF either. So I'll ask it here.

Has Toady said anything about a save break when the next version comes out? I want to start building a massive complex to be filled with temples, taverns, etc., and I would like not to have to restart. I guess I could just use this run as a blueprint and wait until summer break for the real one, but I'd like to think the time won't go to waste.

Alternatively, is there a DFHack utility or something that just allows you to copy over the terrain?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Factional in-fighting in a civ?
« on: April 02, 2015, 10:40:44 pm »
I've seen it in every species but elves. I've even seen it cross-species and cross-civ, but less often.

When did this become a new feature? I thought there could never be any infighting, except for loyalty cascades.

Colonizing the HFS. That thing that I haven't ever done yet. (But always wanted to.)

Defeating the HFS. That other thing. :P

Legendary warrior. One of them. Have I done that...?

I think I'm limited by my insistence on > 60 CPS. (And RL, of course. That's probably the real reason.)

Silentthunders is the bomb. Incredibly impressive. Keep it going!

I just wonder how long it'll take for our libraries to be flooded with tomes pondering the metaphysical and philosophical implications of the existence of burning cheese.

More like that time when the bloody militia captain got switched out. We already have it covering the walls; why not books too?

As goblins don't die a natural death (unless you count violence in goblin society as natural) they might make some of the best sages.

by that logic, elves would be the greatest philosophers since they're also ageless and less violent than goblins

Although a lot of our greatest works of literature, etc. revolve around war and conflict. It could spice up the goblins' works, although yeah, the elves would probably live longer...assuming they're not attacked by said goblins. Wood doesn't go very far against iron.

Yes they do fly, but that doesn't make them immune to lava.

This magma comes from the lower level. I'm assuming it isn't pressurized; if it were, the archer nest would be flooded upon trap use. So yeah, if they fly or climb to the second level, problems ensue. But such beasties, as acknowledged by the OP, are probably pretty rare.

Are the necros good for anything other than militia training?

If the fire-breather dies, then I believe yes. I *think* that revived undead retain all their living abilities (undead kobolds picking locks, undead civilians not triggering traps, etc.) So if you lose your flamethrower to an elite archer, you might be able to bring him back. As a skeletal flamethrower. Or at least a slightly-past-expiration flamethrower.

Most useful legendary skill for a dwarf to have? Gelder.
I recently got a great gelder in my migrant wave, have no idea what I should do with it though... the skill seems highly useless unless you want to be able to have two cats without having 1000 cats...

Unsullied.

One day a flyer with ranged attacks will mock you, your archers and your magma all. Also a climber with ranged. This will work quite well for grounded ones though.

Wait, hold that thought. Do FBs ever fly? It's been a while.

Do you use minecarts at all? I've had civilians somehow die from 1-tile drops at the end of minecart tracks. (The carts themselves stopped on the tile before, and there was a hatch, but somehow it didn't help. Maybe they were dodging the cart and...I don't know, opening the hatch so they could fall through.)

Maybe? But very, very slowly. You would probably want to build up pop first.

While you're modding, why not just increase litter size of your favorite enemies?

Double bonus: build it aboveground, with no surrounding walls, and be at war with at least one neighbor.
