DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Archery has been nerfed?
« on: November 26, 2014, 09:11:45 pm »
Yep, specifically projectiles speed has been lowered and armour piercing capabilities nerfed a lot. Now it hard to penetrate a steel breastplate without iron/steel bolts.

Also, now units can walk, run, run at full speed. .. meaning that they can change speed on the go making aiming harder.

Ahahah exactly! Without forgetting how your entire army could hurt itself with the help of a single warrior dodging in another one, hurting him, making him stumble against another one and so on...

Spiked Armor: better source of FUN since Year 0!

DF General Discussion / Re: Recommended Reading Material

...Obok?

Well, i would suggest you to watch some tutorial on youtube right to understand the basic mechanics of the game, then searching your game style.

The wiki is the holy graal for players, i play since 2010 and i still have it opened the whole time in a tab... it's simply essential!

Yep, but you know, with all these fantasy drawers... spikes looks sooooo good!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adventure mode: too slow archery?
« on: November 26, 2014, 03:53:48 pm »
Nothing wrong, the new combat system splits move/attack time, making fights a little more realistic.
In real life firing a bow is pretty slow... take the arrow from the quiver, put it in position, bend the bow, aim...  not everyone is a Legolas (filthy elf...)!

At the moment armor and clothing are not counted for during a fight if not for defence. If you punch a guy in the face with you bare hands or with stell spiked gauntlets, it's the same, and the same goes for kicking, biting, catching etc etc etc...

Probably in the future things will change, but i don't know how soon!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Engraving and room value?
« on: November 26, 2014, 08:26:43 am »
IIRC (but i'm not sure), smoothing makes your room calculate the value of the wall/floor and add it to the room value (so 10 granite floor tiles will add 10 to the room value, 20 in the case of flux and so on), then engraving will apply a quality modifier to each tile.

So simply smoothing do not add a great value to a room, while engraving it with high-level stone detailer can jmprove it a lot.
From what I had been led to believe was that the value of the wall is added to the room by default, but then smoothing it doubles the value, and engraving it multiplies the value of a wall by the standard value multiplier for the quality level of the engraving. "Room quality is determined by the total value of the room's floor and walls"- excerpt from the wiki which sounds to me like what I said.

Yep! That's correct! I apologize!

DF Suggestions / Re: Rain Causing Floods
« on: November 25, 2014, 11:05:03 pm »
That way any map with depressions and such would be unplayable, because in 1-2 years half of it could be flooded.

i think that to have something similar we would need to wait for a better rain/dainage/evaporation system, at yhe moment it's juat too simplyfied.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to choose a specific material at workshop
« on: November 25, 2014, 09:21:55 pm »
Yep, stockpile selection is the only way at the moment.

Reeeeally strange... at this point the only thing i csn suggedt you is to download everything again and start over with a fresh install. This could be a Masterwork bug, so you should try with vanilla and see what happens.

one more thing i did not understood... the problrm happened only one time or you tryed multiple embarks?

86
Never happened to me. Let's check usual things.

1- there is a direct and free path to food and drinks?

2- are you sure nothing is Forbidden/set to dump?

3- there is perhaps some burrow that doesn't include your stockpile?

4- is there really enough drinks and food for everyone?

Totally agree. We can do much of this trought DFhack, but i would love to see that in vanilla.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Freezing Temperatures
« on: November 24, 2014, 09:39:46 pm »
To wood? Nothing. Only organic tissues and liquids are affected, everything else is perfectly safe.

Zombies also are immune to extreme cold (but not to ice-casting muahahah).

Well, this is a bit exagerated... stone tile yeld boulders only 1/4 of the times (roughly), but you'll still have tons and tons of syone to play with.

Wood instead is much more frequent, but if you have to keep your metal industry fueled and you're not in a heavily forested biome (or at least woodland) you'll have to keep an eye for it.
