 Welcome to New Newtropolis. Not as fancy as the name implies, but it's a bastion of civilization against the Rural Frontier that surrounds it - a dull country of rolling hills and blasted wasteland that no self-respecting city dweller would ever find themselves in. After all, they've got their jobs to do, right? So, they live their pointless little lives, always too short to do anything meaningful, and leave the world as ignorant as they entered it. Cradle to grave, never even guessing at how much better they could be having it if they actually tried to do something, for once.

 Yeah, you won't stand for that crap. It's time to do something that matters - and you're not going to let anything like dying get in the way of it. Instead of shuffling off the mortal coil like some kind of pansy, you've going to stay right put! Sure, some poor bloke is going to have to take a backseat to their body, but they didn't know how to live their life anyway. Hell, if you turn out to be right, they'll end up you the favor.

 And you know you're going to be right.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Oubliette and Orcs - A D&D 1E Spinoff
« on: December 19, 2017, 01:35:34 am »
 When I played a game of D&D 1st Edition, I thought it was nice, simple, but really lacking in some areas and very unbalanced overall. Here is my attempt at making a version that still remains simple, but has enough structure to be enjoyable and enough balance to be playable. I hope I succeeded in at least one of those.

 If you're a late-comer, and you're wondering if you can join, then feel free to ask. Unless I'm swamped with players, you probably can. Don't feel as if you need to read every page to "catch up" or anything - you'll be starting with a new party (or alone, if there's no one else signing up).

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Prophets: Trick the King!  (7/7)
« on: June 09, 2017, 08:02:08 am »
 In this game, one player starts as the King, and the rest of the players start as Prophets. Each year (one round), the King will make a handful of important decisions, and will then ask the Prophets to make a prophecy for the coming year. However, only one Prophet will know what will happen, while the others will come up with false prophecies. The King chooses one of the prophecies to believe, and changes his decisions based off of it. After that, the outcome is revealed and the Prophet who was chosen becomes the new King.

 Hey guys! I've been working on a videogame version of the Storm game I'd run on this forum some time ago. It's almost ready to play, which is pretty good, because this thing is due at midnight of Wednesday-Thursday PST! I need playtesting done for the game, and I was wondering if you guys could give me a hand. Once I put the code here, all you'll need to do is put it into yhe Processing program (which you can get here) and press the play button. The game is controlled with a simple UI and most of the feedback/output is in the console window (it was the easiest way to make it a text-based game, even though it means I can't export it). Here's how to play the game:

 On the screen that pops up, there are two halves - one is the map, and one is the UI.

 The map shows your location in the world as a red dot. Usually, each square on the map will only have one location, but sometimes it will have more.

 The UI has directional buttons for NORTH, EAST, SOUTH and WEST. In the center is the "wait" button. In the upper right corner will be buttons that lead to the separate parts of a multi-location square (if you are in such a square). Below that will be the buttons to talk to PEOPLE or pick up ITEMS (if those exist in your location).

 Below that is a black bar. This black bar will contain the name of the poem that your location is based on, but only if you've discovered the name. If you haven't, it will read "? ? ?" and you will be able to click it to type in the name of the poem (then press enter). Success leads to the poem being written in the console area and a brief exposition by your character. This is sometimes needed to continue the game.

 Below the black bar are the items you've collected. You use them by clicking on them. Usually, they will only work in certain locations, but sometimes they might have a default effect that activates instead of the "You can't do this" message.

That's about it. If you want to see what the game plays like (albeit in the forum version) you can go here. If you have any questions,  just ask.

(Note: the reason I'm making this before I put in the code is so that more people will playtest it when I do put it in - I expect to have the code done less than 24 hours before the deadline)

Mafia / Exquisite Cops (and Robbers)

Warning: This game is fueled by player input - game balance not included. You have been warned.

  This game will have 8 players and will last 5 rounds. It is based around the idea of player-generated roles, where everything but your Alignment has been decided by another player. At the beginning, they will each be presented (not assigned) an Alignment. They will then design a Wincon based off of that Alignment and send it to me via PM. Once everyone has done that, I will send the Alignment+Wincon to a different player, but will only present the Wincon to them. They will think of an "Archetype" it will fall into (Investigation, Deception, Protection, Killing - basically whatever you can think of). Once that is done, I will send the Alignment+Wincon+Archetype to yet another player. They will see the Archetype with the Alignment added in front (Evil Deception, Town Killing, Neutral Conversion, etc.). That player will create the role's first ability, and give that ability a name. Then I will take the Alignment+Wincon+Archetype+Ability (let's just call it a "role" now) to another player, who will only see the ability, and will decide what the Rolename is. Lastly, I will give the role to one more player, but present only the Rolename. That player will create the second ability of that role.

 Never in this process does a person receive the same role twice. In the end, there will be some players who have not seen or added anything to the role. One of those people is assigned that role for the round, and then the round begins. I will choose whether it is a day start or a night start, depending on the roles present in the game. So, to recap the steps:

1. Alignment -> Wincon
2. Wincon -> Archetype
3. (Alignment+)Archetype -> Ability 1
4. Ability 1 -> Rolename
5. Rolename -> Ability 2
6. Roles are assigned
7. Game begins

 Extra rules and stuff to keep in mind:
-If you want to be replaced, it would be better if it happens between rounds than in the middle of one. It won't mess up the game as much.
-Although you may use your knowledge of what role-fragments you witnessed/created when making decisions, do not reveal those role fragments to other players (however, you may tell players a decision is "because of the role fragments I know of").
-Only send your role-fragment PMs to me. I will use a shared google docs to reveal it to Spectators.

 EDIT:
-"Anti-<alignment>" means: Not being <alignment> and having a wincon that would endanger <alignment> players.
-If a wincon doesn't say you have to be alive you don't have to be alive.

Dripping Forest

 Puddles cover the forest floor, and a few lie on the path you stand on. Above you, the autumn branches shake with the wind and let loose small showers onto the damp leaves that seem to cover the ground in every direction. Except for that, there is no sound for miles in the rain-scented air. From the NORTH runs a small road, and splits to the EAST and WEST at the point where you stand.

 You see the sun rising to the EAST. It is day.

 I'll only be running this forum game from 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM PDT each day. You do not have to be present every session, nor do you have to stay until we reach 12:00 AM (but do inform me when you leave early). Since time is limited, I suggest that you check for updates frequently so you won't hold everyone else behind. Now with that out of the way, it's time to make a character:

 Since you've clicked on this topic, you probably recognize the quote from somewhere. I do too, but I can't remember for the life of me from where I heard it. I think it comes from a poem, or perhaps a slow, kinda-spoken song, but that's about it. I've been trying to search for it or remember it for a while now, but I haven't turned up anything. Do you have a clue where it might come from?

Overview: Trapped in the Nightmare Realm, players will have work together to survive against unrelenting waves of deadly slime. This hex-based miniatures game starts off simple, with the team of players on one end and the slime portal on the other, but becomes increasingly challenging as each passing wave introduces new mechanics and adversaries (and thankfully, allies) to the battlefield.

Actions: Players can make up to one move action and one standard action per turn. A player can use a move action to move a number of hexes less than or equal to their Speed - however, moving into slime costs an additional movement, and columns, structures, and other characters and structures block movement. If both actions are used, any damage the player deals that turn-cycle is reduced by 2.

Abilities: There are 3 classes of abilities: standard, automatic, and move substitute. Standard abilities are employed with a standard action, and are the most common type of ability. Move sub. abilities require a move action, and include some sort of movement in their effect. Automatic abilites are always in effect (such as passive healing).

Targets: Abilities almost always target one or more hexes (area of effect), or one or more entities (characters or structures). To use an ability with a target, there must be nothing blocking line-of-sight between the target and its user. Characters, columns, and some structures (but none of the permanent structures) block line-of-sight. AoE abilities affect everything in the hex(es), and are the only way to affect slime. Abilities that target entities affect those entities and nothing else.

Damage: When characters or structures lose all their hitpoints, they are removed. Slime, however, does not take damage in the same fashion (see Slime). The five permanent structures cannot take damage and cannot be removed (and neither can the columns). Slime portals (which are not technically structures) cannot be damaged, either. Also, unless otherwise noted, an ability cannot damage the teammates or heal the enemies of its user.

Turns: At the start of a player-turn, all players post their actions. The actions are resolved in order of post, unless specified otherwise. Then, during the slime-turn, the slime moves and attacks (in that order). These two turns, in the order presented, constitute one turncycle. When a turncycle ends, another begins.

Slime: The slime is in fact made up of many individual slimes that each take up exactly one hex. Each slime does not occupy a hex the same way a characters or structures do, so can share a space with a character or structure (but not another slime). Each slime can only be hurt with area-of-effect damage. When a slime is damaged, a d10 is rolled; if the number is less than or equal to the damage, the slime is destroyed - otherwise, the damage is completely ignored. Each slime moves at a speed of 1 hex per turn, and can only attack a player that is in its hex (2 damage), but moving into a slime damages the player by 1 point. At the end of every turncycle, all hexes with a slime portal icon are filled with slime (unless already occupied).

Death: When a player dies, the slot that they filled is removed. Thankfully, additional players are added during the course of the game.

And remember: -Discussion of tactics "in-character" is allowed, and even encouraged, but try to stay on topic. (This does not mean you have to be in-character when discussing tactics, of course.)
              -Choose a color that is easy to read, and distinct from the colors already chosen.
              -Play seriously: I'm not just the moderator - I'm your opponent.

Two Kings face each other from opposite ends of the chess board. When one is eliminated, the other wins. With their wits as their main weapon, they must mainly rely on moving and capturing like any king. However, unlike their ordinary counterparts, they can do more than that, for this isn't just any game of chess, this is
The Game of Kings

 Two players will fight each other on a standard chess board, each person controlling a king and beginning in the king's starting location. They win when their opponent is eliminated - by any means whatsoever. Each player will have a set of abilities, that they can use during the game. The abilities are determined before the battle, when players will get to "purchase" abilities using a pool of a hundred points. However, there is no set list of abilities to buy. Players will have to suggest abilities to me via PM, and I will reply with the price of that ability. Few abilities are off bounds, and since your abilities are not revealed to your opponent (except in rare cases), thinking outside the box is the best way to catch your opponent by surprise.

Creative Projects / Poetry Contest: Winner has been Chosen!
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:47:46 am »
 Since the Poetry Thread is dying, I have decided to start this contest to bring people back to the spirit of poems. I'll be accepting submissions for one week, so the deadline for entry is the midnight between the 29th and the 30th. Once the deadline is reached, I will lock the thread. Shortly after, I will post the winner of the contests.

 However, I'll be adding a little twist to this: Since I have no idea what to use as a prize, everyone can submit a prize idea alongside their poem. After the deadline is reached, I will select one of the prize ideas. However, no matter who's idea I select, the person with the selected idea will not have any advantage in the contest. This is just a fun way to let you input your own ideas into the process.

 Now onto the rules:
1. Only one poem can be submitted per person.
2. If you have submitted a poem, you can submit as many prize ideas as you want. Do not submit prize ideas if you have not submitted a poem.
3. Only submit poems that you yourself have written.
4. Using alternate accounts is not permitted.

 Well, I think that's all! Time to start submitting, and may the best poem win!
