DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tree Regrowth
« on: July 31, 2014, 08:44:41 pm »
I haven't seen a single caravan bring wood anymore, and you can't grow forests.  Embark someplace with short trees or no trees, and it really gets FUN.

You should be able to order wood from your civ's liaison, at least.  Elves don't seem to bring me any logs, but that may just be a transient thing, who knows.

My embark happens to be quite heavily forested, and trees seem to grow above ground.  I haven't seen any underground trees in my soil layer since moving the save to 0.40.05 though.  (There were definitely some ceiling-pokes in .04.)

I have had caravans bring wood, but I haven't gotten a liaison in this fortress. Probably due to the mountainhomes being invaded or something... Stupid gobbos. Why do you always win by default? ;~;

Uhm, well, that's nit surprising, is it? Trees take a lot of time to regrow, the Elves are uppity about it for a reason...

Well yes but... a sapling does not stay a sapling for two whole years! It should at least be a single trunk by now or something ;~; I'm running out of wood and someone was just killed in the caverns randomly and there's no combat log... I am afraid.

So the regrowth of trees was supposedly lowered to 1/10th of what we were experiencing in 0.40.01-.04. In two whole years, not a single tree has regrown. Like. Not even exaggerating. Anyone else getting this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Candy Minecart Bug Fixed?
« on: July 31, 2014, 06:48:43 pm »
Is this bug actually fixed now? The wiki does not yet say it is, but I made a candy minecart just to test it and it took the full 6 wafers of the stuff.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I created a world with advanced parameters, and the min and max temperatures were both set to -1000. This means that all dead organic material on the surface nearly instantly freezes, shattering into oblivion. Dwarves and basically all living creatures die within minutes of severe frostbite of the EVERYTHING. We have inhabited the caverns, which happened to be only 7 or so z-levels from the frozen surface. All three levels of caverns have been breached and the magma sea has been found. Two adamantine spires are known, but one was mostly unsalvagable as it is a direct spire into hell from 30 levels up. I hope that the next will be more fruitful, as 25 adamantine wafers don't go very far.

Welp... since it's been necro'd already I would like to post my findings!

A few months have passed in the ice wastes of Azmokol, "The Obscure Wheel". Within the first few days we made it into the caverns with minimal casualties on the sock front. We embarked with a band of 6 miners and one woodcutter, all armed with copper tools. We also brought along a steel anvil and a heaping pile of 29 dogs. We've been surviving on gathered plants and the butchered remains of a Yak. We have a Water Buffalo in reserve, but I think we may try to keep her alive for her milk, if it doesn't freeze before being of use. No cavern beasties have caused much uproar and the biggest threat overall has been a giant toad that we startled when we broke into the caverns. It quickly hopped away into a nearby lake and hasn't been spotted since. If you get this message, send more migrants. And socks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Building Destroyer+Support=???
« on: July 30, 2014, 03:43:54 pm »
Only "undead" (NOT_LIVING, which includes beasts made of inorganic materials) building destroyers go after supports, and they only go after wooden supports.

Hm.. that's very strange behavior. Thanks for the info though!

What material was the support made out of?

It was made from a stoneware brick (brick made from fire clay). Those count as normal stone blocks (I think) so it shouldn't have been any different.  :-\

Hmm... it bypassed the support entirely. I don't think they can actually destroy them.

Yes I believe this is a fairly common way of dealing with FBs.

Thanks for the reply, I just didn't know whether I would need a lever or just to let the thing go about its business and kill itself. Hurrah for supports being breakable!

I checked the wiki and couldn't find whether building destroyers of the level 2 variety can destroy supports?

I want to know because I would just love it if this forgotten beast would break a support on its own and kill itself with a cave-in trap seeing how it has poisonous vapors...

Well crap

**** you, Murphy, for invoking your law.

Just loaded the save for the first time after posting the previous reply. And now my very topmost entrance ramps to the fort stopped working

It's not the ramps in my case. It seems weapon traps block caravan access now.

Yeah, when I came back after a little (at least half a year) break from DF, traps blocked caravan access. I thought I was going to cry at first haha.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Elven Diplomat
« on: July 29, 2014, 02:50:20 pm »
So, I genned a fresh world for 40.05. I was all set to spit in the elven diplomat's face when I saw on the changelog that elven diplomacy had returned (or something to that effect). But it turns out my civilization is at war with elves, so I have no idea if the elven diplomat is reinstated. So my question is: Does anyone know for sure whether the elven diplomat who asks for a tree quota has returned, and is this the cause for my civilizations war with them?

It has returned, but that's not why you're at war. World-gen wars are determined not by diplomats but by ethics differences. You will need to generate a new world in order to piss off the elves.

Thanks for confirming, but are you sure that the new relation of a tree-quota has absolutely NOTHING to do with relations during world-gen? I've never had a world where dwarves were at war with elves from my history of normal world-gen (No advanced parameters).
