Select a dwarf, select Pref (I believe) and then Z to view the profile. Read what he's unhappy about.

Best tricks:  build your dining room to be as opulent and large and engraved as you can.

I have a number of steel bolts and what not laying outside my fortress. I've marked all of them to be melted, but some won't move. It's blocking traps - are they stuck? Is there a way I can tell?

Do they have a place to take them? Are they allowed to collect refuse from outside? Check the Orders menu.

If your marksdwarves are practicing at an archery range, they'll only use the crappy bone or wood bolts.

Try removing all armor, finding it, and "F"orbidding it.

Cool. If it's marked as a "stray" it won't cause pet unhappiness if it dies, correct?

I have a number of Stray War dogs, and some War Dogs, and a Named Stray War Dog. What is is the significance of the named dog? He's named Mithuceca, "Ringravens." And what is the difference between a War Dog and a Stray War Dog?

Basically, which ones should be on chains where they'll probaby die during a goblin invasion?

What version are you running? The latest version has traps that affect/kill merchants. Your depot may also not be close enough to the side of the map they come from.

You'll need a dwarf with Furnace Operating, and some charcoal unless you built a magma forge.

A hole to the surface is not needed. Some times it takes awhile to kick in. If you leave it, eventually a dwarf will try to do the command, and report what failed.

I would like to build a "funeral home" in the top levels of my fortress, with a coffin dedicated to anyone. When someone is buried there, remove the coffin and process with it to the lowest crypts and install it permanently. Then a new one is built.
