DF General Discussion / Re: 50.10 missing keyboard controls?
« on: September 24, 2023, 08:48:12 pm »
Oh no.

Bought the game back when it came out on Steam, and subsequently got an upgrade on my mac that can't play DF. I've been waiting patiently for the Mac version, and only logging in sometimes to check that it was still coming. Thought the Linux version might do it. I hate to think that I'll have to buy and somehow use a mouse or something. Why would anyone want to play it off the keyboard? How terrible. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution before my wait for a Mac version is over.

I don't know about anyone else on Mac, but I bought the game when it first came out on Steam, with no Windows machine and no intent to buy a windows machine. I still have no regrets, but I have owned the game for a while now, with no way of playing it. I tried wineskin, no success as yet. I suspect I'm not alone. Good to hear that a version I'll be able to play is still on the cards! Very exciting. I've missed playing DF for so long, good news is good. One day my game will return! Gives me something to look forward to.

....This is how we ended up with that damn drunk cats bug....

Get that dorf a hospital bed. And you need a chief medical dorf! Even if they have no skillz. If you put the injured in a hospital bed and let someone examine them, the mangled arm will be washed, sewn up, and the dorf might even start working again before being fully healed.

My third or fourth bed in my fort is usually part of a dinky hospital (rarely more than 2x3 in the corner of the one room in the protofort) so that simple medical attention can be dealt with fast, before injuries get infected and cause more strife. It should be installed directly after the dorfs get their first sleep, when the beds are built and have been slept in, but not yet assigned to a dorf.

If that's the case, you could try using the ASCII, or is just a tileset now?

DF Suggestions / Re: QOL: bulk remove/cancel constructions
« on: February 14, 2023, 11:15:46 pm »
I believe in the older versions it was `b` -> `c` -> `n` to mark furniture etc to be deconstructed, please bring that back. It could be added to the `m` -> `x` menu like removing constructions now.

Also please add a way to cancel pending constructions without clicking each one and then clicking cancel. This could be part of the `x` menu just like cancelling digging designations.
I can't see this in 47.05 anywhere. Maybe you're thinking of a 3rd party memory hacking tool?

Closest you can do is mass forbid/claim buildings or hide/unhide buildings. Mass deconstruct doesn't appear to be a thing.

Now, it was a heck of a lot easier to deconstruct a bunch of furniture in 47.05 using q, then just running along a line of furniture tapping x, so something just as easy for our new mouse-driven universe is a great idea.

Or make mouse completely optional. Mouse-driven games tend to become games I don't play.

Yeah the explanation isn't written anywhere obvious, I had to have it all explained to me over a decade ago, and since then I've tried to pay forward where I can. It's not necessarily immediately obvious as to how to post your images, but the results can be very satisfying.

Your scribe can take years to get on with it. He needs plenty of time to think, pray, sleep, eat, socialise, think some more....

I have never successfully had a dwarf write on a quire, but have had plenty of success with the type of book called a scroll, which is simply a sheet and a scroll roller. Perhaps you should make sure unquired sheets are also available, just in case.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: STEAM: Simple Questions Thread
« on: February 13, 2023, 10:03:39 pm »
I just about fell off my chair laughing when I read about the dwarven sock obsession. ;D That was in the Wiki, on which I am still very much dependent as a beginner. However, many articles still refer to the original version. Is that still a thing in the Steam version?
That being how dwarves would rush out to ongoing combat to claim stuff dropped by invaders?  There's a standing order setting for that now (under the labor tab somewhere now I think) that causes stuff dropped by invaders to be forbidden by default.  You have to manually unforbid it for dwarves to rush out and grab socks.

That said, the clothing of your own dorfs is not forbidden when they die. So if you have a local dorf drown unexpectedly, his pile of clothing is up for grabs, and I've occasionally had a series of villagers-down-the-well-style drowning suicides, as dorf after dorf jumps enthusiastically into an aquifer pit, then realises they can't swim....

Marvelous! Hall of Horrors!

as far as I know, dwarves spill their drinks, usually in taverns, when the barrel/pot where the booze is stored becomes unavailable for some reason (usually someone else wants to move or use that barrel).

If your kitchen is too close to your booze supply, perhaps the chef-dorfs are going and grabbing a barrel of booze to make a roast just when someone else picked that same barrel for a drink.

Lead crutches covered in steel spikes help with that. It's remarkable how much damage a heavy crutch can do.
I've seen crutches wielded effectively even by civilian dwarves caught up in melee.  Definitely get rid of all wooden crutches, metal is the way to go.  Platinum is the heaviest normal crutch material, but lead is also an excellent choice.  The steel spikes are a fantastic addition!
Yeah, we did a lot of !Science! on it back in the day. I don't always have access to platinum. As far as I can tell the spikes are decorative and storyteller rather than effective, but they make me smile.
I'm not sure if decorations add any weight to the object or not.  If so, that would increase the whacking damage, but even if not, it's definitely more fun to imagine a crutch menacing with spikes of steel used to strike down a zombie than just a plain crutch.  I hope that one day, items decorated with menacing spikes will have increased piercing damage though.

If that happens, a lot of my randomly-decorated mugs are going to take out some eyes. And the occasional random artifact item of clothing is going to do some gelding...

DF Suggestions / Re: Allow modding gender/sex/pronouns
« on: February 11, 2023, 08:11:11 pm »
They get a bigger mood penalty from wearing the opposite gender's clothing however than they do for wearing the ungendered base clothing.

How awful.

Better: the game could continue with no repurcussions for wearing a dress and/or trousers if any dwarf feels like wearing a dress and/or trousers, or wearing high heeled shoes, or thongs (means a VERY different item of clothing for us Aussies anyhow) or whatever. I'm lucky enough to be able to wear clothing made for men when I feel like it (pockets! Yay!) or clothing made for women here in the real world. Ideal. Why program unneccessary gender-based behaviours for clothing when the game works fine without them? I find it hard to understand why people would ever want to try to gender clothing. Not like how you dress has anything to do with peoples sex/gender/cisness/transness anyway. There are better things to repair than something that ain't broke in the first place.
