DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: cats

Trees appear to have some sort of maniacal grudge against my dwarfs. Those highwoods in particular. No less than five dwarfs of Diedbolts have been slain by "The highwood log collides with Urist McUrists Head. It erupts in an explosion of gore!"
My dwarfs don't even go outside often. One of them got my metalsmith when he was on break... outside, for some reason? The trees, man. Probably full of elves.
TREEEEEES

It's odd, because I've never had a dwarf hit by the falling tree. Closest I've come is a rain of cats.

Friendlies can be odd. I don't see any harm in leaving them be to see what they'll do next. Might want to have an alternate entrance to the trading post though, just in case...

I'm reminded of the charming Pixar-like plump helmet men expedition.

edit: Poorly crafted link fixed.

They must rub beards to procreate.  Adjacent thrones allow beard rubbing to happen often.
What about statues though?

It was never said as to what the beards need to be rubbed WITH....

Plus, plenty of those statues have beards, if you want to get picky about it.

I'm starting to think that "buckets" is a euphemism.

They're telling the world how they're having buckets of Fun Fun Fun.

I made a cat fountain by mistake recently. The mayor and his brood of cat and kittens went up a tree, presumably fruit picking, then a woodcutter came through and cut the tree down. I happened to be watching at the time (trying to get the woodcutter not to do what he was obviously about to do) but too late. Injured felines, and injured mayor (it appears he landed on his hands). They all fell out of the tree, rather slowly, so it seemed to be raining cats and kittens at ground level.

Another time I had some cats, dogs, and other animals attack a giant with their dwarf companions. The dwarfs were picked up by the giant, stripped, and their clothing was strewn about before they themselves were thrown. The animals, including the cats, were just thrown across the screen. This injured some dwarfs and some animals, but the cats, as far as I know, all just landed on their feet and attacked the giant again at a run. I was picking up discarded clothing on the surface for ages.

I also always stable a kitten down at magma level where the magmaforges are, otherwise they all wander about on the surface, and the vermin gets insane down at level -150 or so. Dwarfs who like cats are also encouraged to be porters or messengers, travelling the levels as much as possible. They work as verminsweepers, like the Pied Piper of Hamelin...

Current fortress: Some dwarf who got struck down by an elf at some point. I am pretty sure the elf wasn't a relation of the elves who are selling us useful bears currently. There's no way I'm going to do anything about it if they keep bringing us animals we can use.

A previous fortress: I had everyone engraving either the mayor being menaced by his most hated vermin (mosquitos), or the symbol of my civilisation: A floodgate. My fort basically looked like this:
☺☺☺XXXXX☺XXXX☺☺☺☺XXXXXX
☺XXXXXX☺X☺X☺X☺XXXXXX☺☺☺
in different combinations. Everywhere. All we had on the walls were endless masterful floodgate carvings, and the mayor crying in fear with giant mosquitos. Weirdly, the mayor was in a GREAT mood all the time. One engraver was finally found who would engrave food. I fired all the rest of the engravers, and had a new suite of rooms made for the mayor, mostly engraved with various types of fruit, and fruit trees. They were excellent.

I'd recommend magmaforging. And a minecart railway system. Or even a surface magmaforging area, either serviced by pumped or by minecarter magma. Because wood is so... elvish.

Menaces with spikes of bee stings

My thoughts exactly. Now that would be a painful crown to wear!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mute Outpost Liaison
« on: May 10, 2015, 05:50:43 pm »
I have been wondering why my outpost liaison was hanging around my meeting area for a year, when my expedition leader was perfectly available.
I looked at his description, and for some reason he has no tongue. I guess that means he can't hold meetings.

This probably isn't a bug-some people just don't have a tongue-but it is kind of annoying. Time to arrange for an unfortunate accident.
This is amazing.

At least he wasn't pregnant.

As I said, I have honey bee remains, large roach remains, blue jay remains and green tree frog remains. They're all outside, but that should not matter, right?
I believe that could definitely matter, depending on your options. I recall there being something like "ignore outdoor vermin remains" in some menu. Or maybe it was simply something about cleaning outdoors. At any rate, might be worth looking into.

That was my reaction as well. The vermin remains ignore is under {o}rders, and it's buggy. Get some vermin remains into a stockpile deep indoors, and see if it helps any. Also check he's not inadvertantly burrowed.

I always watch the conversations about this with confusion, as I've never had a dwarf so much as stub their toe due to staircases.
Only X stairs have this dangerous property, not > < stairs.

I can have as many as 100 flights of X (up down) stairs stacked on top of each other. They've never experienced a single dwarf falling down them.

Dear Fortress:

Please ignore the current rain of cats and kittens. There was a clerical error in the instructions I gave to our woodcutters. The error has been dealt with, and it won't happen again. Those affected are free to apply to Mayor Urist McCrazycatdorf for kitten fur hats. He is currently holding offices in the hospital until the doctor comes off break. That will be all, thankyou.

--Overseer.

P.S. Until further notice, the mayor will not be signing documents, as both his hands have been broken. Ask the manager if you need documents signed. -Ov.

sometimes when woodcutters fell trees they stand in the way of the falling tree and often die. its surprising he only had a crippled hand.

It can be worse. Try having a tree felled when half a dozen dorfs (including the resident crazy catdorf mayor and his entire brood of kittens) just found the stepladder stockpile, and what you thought was an oak was in fact an apple tree....

It rained kittens for ages, and most of them didn't make it. Suffice to say, it would have been better if they mayor had died, instead of only breaking his hands.

If it's water you need, go for a place with an aquifer. Many aquifers are only a few levels deep, easy to punch, and unlimited water is nice. Aquifer + pumps = surface water, if that's the goal. Make your very own creek!

..and a dwarf died after punching a capybara and then fell down the stairs of my fort? rotted and poured miasma out..
Yeah, they fall down the stairs like that because they lose conciousness.  Staircases are treated like empty space by KO'd things.  I usually split my stair at z-1, just by 10 tiles or so, which lets you put in a guardroom and makes passing out while fleeing from hostiles into the fort less lethal.
This is one of the factors speaking against single central master stair designs for forts.  I once had a syndrome hit, something minor with dizziness and fits of unconsciousness, something like 90 dwarves fell to their deaths.
Well this looks easily weaponisable...

If it's weaponisable, I apparently am immune to this weapon.

I always watch the conversations about this with confusion, as I've never had a dwarf so much as stub their toe due to staircases. On one occasion two Urist McMothers gave birth on the stairs, which I have been told would mean that the baby would fall to the bottom, but it was fine. Since then the Outpost Liaison gave birth on the stairs, and her baby was fine too. I've had an attack of bats on the stairs. Urist Mcfighters would attack and either hit or miss the bats, and never fall. A fighter was injured on the stairs, but he didn't fall down the stairs either. A tired dorf fell asleep in the staircase. He eventually woke up and went and got a beer, having had no problems. I've even managed to collapse part of a staircase in a mistaken attempt at remodelling. There was dust everywhere. Two children were killed when a storeroom full of wood fell on them. And no one, not even those dorfs unconcious on the staircase, fell even a single flight. A fire was lit due to an unexpected FB. Even though there were burning dorfs, kittens, and socks travelling up and down the stairs, they never tripped and fell down the stairs, although one dorf did burn to death on the stairs. I have experimented with Hatch covers, as someone said this would have effect. Dorfs are all still fine.
Am I doing something wrong?
