DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mist generators: are they worth it?
« on: January 20, 2023, 01:35:17 am »
They're good for upping the spirits of every dorf, and thus upping the spirits of those who absolutely need it.

I like putting the waterfall part of the generator in the entryway of taverns and temples, so that everyone goes through them. As an added bonus, when they pass over the floor gratings through the waterfall, they get washed. Mud, blood, Forgotten Beast dust, vomit, and other things collect in pools under the mist generator. Not all dorfs wash, but they're all washed in the mist generator waterfall!

If you don't have the mod, it is possible to sell half-full used buckets, complete with their contents, although obviously not the wooden ones to the elves.

Interestingly, I had endless injured dorfs stuck in hospital for years in some cases (traction bench was installed incorrectly, took me a while to figure it out) and yet never had a bucket problem, so it depends on the fort in some cases.

I don't like it, and see no point to it other than people who want to criticise the game making a big deal out of it if it's not 18. It's to prevent the inevitable haters, in my opinion, and to prevent liability, got nothing to do with gameplay. But hey, easily repairable, so easily ignored.

No loo(k) and being forced to use mouseover is much more annoying.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Help - Bodies on Fire - Steam

I had a reindeer cheese that wouldn't go out years ago. It kept setting other things on fire, and with a steady stream of
!kitten!->!sock!->!dwarf!->!forest!
it got to be a problem. I ended up walling the thing in, roofing it over, and leaving it to burn eternally in a small hot box. Sodding nuisance, but I had other things to do.

If it's a high priority job, give it to someone who doesn't have other hauling on their list of jobs. You can even cancel everything else they do except priority hauling, if that's your bailiwick.

I often don't actually worry too much about stuff being moved, it will be moved eventually.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Taverns and werebeasts
« on: December 08, 2022, 05:55:45 pm »
I have a tavern, and it's not full of guards, but I do have doors on it. Werebeasts are so rare that I have only had one or two taverns locked to prevent carnage spread, but be prepared is my motto...

"Thiefnoble", a porcupine bone bed menacing with spikes of platinum.
Of course a bed made of porcupine of all things is ridiculous, but it's also one hell of a statement.

It's interesting that the porcupine bones are the bedframe itself, yet the spikes themselves, they're platinum, not porcupine quills. It really does sound like a bed of nails from a pantomime.

how can a TABLE make a plaintive gesture?!

Presumably by lying on its back and showing its fluffy belly like a dog...

....we really need a steam version discussion area. Or perhaps the reverse, assume all is steam except a nonsteamversion discussion area.

Interesting that deconstructing is no longer a task anydorf can do. That means dorfkids can no longer take the task up!

DF General Discussion / Re: Any news when 50.01 gets released classic?

Me, I'm really looking forward to the Mac version, but it will be sad if it's not got the ASCII visuals, I've always loved that about Dwarf Fortress. No doubt it will "happen when it happens" and I'm fine with that. So delighted it's been a successful launch, even if I can't play the game! Very very awesome that it's happened so well.

DF General Discussion / Re: Steam version UI

I bought it, because I have loved this game for over a decade, and there's no reason not to support, but I have no machine capable of running the game.

That said, I always played without addons, and don't see why I would start now, so yeah, I think it will be good enough for me. Soon as I find a way of playing it on the machines I own.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mac version on Steam?
« on: December 06, 2022, 03:43:33 pm »
My machines won't run it either (I need a mac or a linux version) but I bought it anyway, with the assumption that they'll get a mac version to me when they can. It is a great disappointment not to be included in the Steam release, but I can wait.

The forums do appear to be being slashdotted. It probably means good things, I guess, all these people wanting to see to forums and all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: i cant make pi or steel
« on: December 01, 2022, 03:11:26 am »
That list doesn't include a smelter, that's why you can't smelt. You need a smelter to make the iron-bearing ores into iron, then to make the iron bars into pig iron, then to make the pig iron bars into steel. It doesn't have to be a magma smelter, but it will use less coal than a normal smelter.

You could try giving him a private bar with a hired poisoner bartender for the booze issue if you keep him loose. My usual method with undead nobles is walled off rooms with everything they could desire on the inside. They become very slow and steady bookkeepers, and wander their vast rooms at their leasure, occasionally turning into weregiraffes and banging their head on the ceiling. I presume necromancers also don't need food?

Also welcome back, it's great and I'm glad you're having fun :)

Four attempts at getting Wambo to make an image of a goblin spearman riding atop a beak dog:
Spoiler: Attempt #1 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Attempt #2 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Attempt #3 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Attempt #4 (click to show/hide)

The first and second attempts look better, in my opinion, to the third and fourth.
Also, the turkey looks like a cassowary to me.

...wow.

I mean, my dorfs are considered "free range" even compared to players who aren't factory farming them in little cubes, but... wow. Your playstyle is officially as far from mine as I think it's possible to go.
