DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Controlling Child Areas
« on: November 23, 2022, 04:39:34 pm »
One of the beautiful things about this game is that there are often several solutions to things, making playstyles different and results various. I hate those games where everyone is "This is BIS! Only do this way!" and so on. More fun to have a game with so much variety, so many different ways for things to be "solved".

Hello! Welcome!

I'm not a burrower, so if you don't want to burrow, here's another method:
I found the best way to control children playing was to build them bedrooms around a large wellroom, and stock that wellroom with good quality food and unbinned toy storage areas, unassigned beds and unassigned pieces of good quality furniture. And make that area down the corridor from anywhere else. The kids eventually return to their bedroom to sleep, then go to the toys to play, or the food and booze to get some vittles.... and rarely leave. That said, there are attractions which take their attention. Temples, libraries, the odd tavern (there don't seem to be age limits on taverns) and the wonderful occasional opportunity to deconstruct a built structure. Kids LOVE deconstructing furniture for some reason.

Honestly disappointed it doesn't have at least one of the endemic critters, it just looks like yet another metal shirt to me.

Playing on a Mac, and I've thought for a while this was a Windows OS issue. Back before the issue with travellers from outside the map (currently I don't get migrants, caravans, etc, because of a machine upgrade) my Mac had no FPS issues, even with an in-game decades old game. Even now, with the game only just not working, no FPS issues. I am aware that I'm basically running the thing on WINE or whatever, but still, seems odd that it's not an issue for me. Is there something different about your OS handling the game?

Interesting. You can't reassign your bookkeeper?

I'm pretty sure stockpiled shells don't break down. They do if they're not in a stockpile though. If you've got a real problem with vermin, stable a cat over the shells to kill the vermin. You will need to de-shell the turtle or mussel before the shell ends up on the stockpile. If you are lucky enough to have them fished out of the water, make sure you have a fishery, for mussel shell removal (the mussels should end up in roasts, they're good eating too!).

You could also make a stock of platinum crutches in case of accidents, and sell all the wooden crutches off so the dorfs don't get them by mistake. Platinum crutches really make excellent bludgeoning weapons.

DF General Discussion / Re: Help me solve this crayon drawing conundrum

Thankyou for the update.

I guess if crayons are open sometime, the next step is for someone to make an appropriate donation and request "a draltha not a drunian" or alternatively a large enough of a donation for "a draltha AND a drunian" so that comparisons could be made.

there are some subtleties to the mood system. like the fact some dwarves might demand a specific variety of cloth, or silk. I'm honestly not sure how specific it can be but the wiki will fill you in. sometimes you might find a dwarf asking for the same thing twice - like delphonso said, this can clue you in to the need for a specific variety.

It is always very specific. Silk-derived cloth (Silk cloth), animal yarn-derived cloth (wool cloth, etc), and plant-derived cloth (usually just called "cloth") are different substances and the dorf will decide which it wants. When they go through the list, they might only be missing one ingredient, but the dorf will continue to ask for all of the ingredients, it's up to you to work out which is the missing one. And thread is not cloth: So they could ask for thread and cloth of different types, or the same type.

The clothing wears out WAY too fast within Dwarf Fortress....  it's like the stuff is made out of paper towels.
Even 2000 years ago the clothing which was made would last several years even for people who did hard labor.

My dorfs have clothing that does last that long: Are you making yours out of paper towel? I really don't need to start a clothing industry for three years or more, pretty good for clothes that are constantly worn with no replacements.

Perhaps what we really need is a clothing repair function, so that darns, sashiko and patches can upgrade xxclothingxx to *clothing* again.

DF General Discussion / Re: Trade depot and bins

I run with absolutely no hacks or extras, and can also select gems out of the bins. It's just some people like hitting "trade all" and thus trade the bins by mistake.

(and hoping it gets a Mac release relatively quickly),

Oh so very much yes! This game runs so well on Mac, and so clunkily on Windows!

I'm less enthusiastic about the Steam release because it seems to be art-tile heavy (I really want to keep using the ASCII-like method, as it's better for my eyes) but if it means that more users lead to more mac users then I'm all for it. The M-range chips seem to have locked me out of playing on my mac for now, until I can get an M-free computer again.

Friend of mine hooked his machine up to a huge smart-TV and had this Starcraft in surround-vision thing going on, where each (usually centimetre-high) sprite was the size of my hand or larger. Perhaps a supermegasize TV screen might help you a little in making DF larger? Or is that not going to work?

Make the river variable depth. 3-depth usually, but with "waves" of 4-depth periodically. Pressure plates and floodgates with a hallway randomiser should work. Then when dorfs are trekking through the water they will on occasion be hit with a wave and have to swim for it.

I would just put large binless stockpiles for saleable gems in a room nearby to the trade depot in future. Right now, you can bring the bins to the depot but not sell the elves the bins, just the gems. I mean, they only get upset if you offer them the wooden stuff, they know you're a heathen who uses it, they just don't want to buy the wood.

I prefer to keep my gemstones, as they are nonrenewable resources and I like to use cut gems to decorate furniture.

The appropriate place to put a "let's play" is probably Community Games and Stories.
