DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Training Weapons versus unarmed.
« on: May 09, 2017, 07:34:00 am »
1) Can i make it so people like miners use their picks to fight instead of dropping them when their squad is set to active
No. As long as their mining labor is enabled, that pick is assigned to their "mining uniform". Items appear to be associated with one uniform at a time, my opinion, not certain.
The only other time I have seen a miner use a pick as a weapon is when they see an allied unit under attack, then they seek vengence. A lone miner who is under attack will only defend themselves by parrying with it.

I've had a fort which had an infestation of bats, a long time ago. A group of civilians stood around playing "slap the bat", whacking at it but not hitting it, again and again, until they collapsed from exhaustion. More and more civilians walked up and tried to hit the bat. Eventually the miner of the fort walked up, whacked the bat with his pick once, killing it, and walked off. Every dorf involved in this experience got covered in bat blood. This miner was not part of the military, he was just a civilian with a pick in his hand.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Clothing Disposal Techinques
« on: May 09, 2017, 04:14:44 am »
As I meant to add to my prior joking post, old clothing (washed and torn into strips) could be usefully repurposed as dressings. And if lighting ever gets implemented, even the most unsalvagable rags could be oil-soaked as the tips of torches.

I think that wound dressing would be a great thing to do with old rags. But paper should also be made.

{Urist cancels dress wound: No old/damaged clothing to tear up....}

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting rid of priorities...

EDIT: Oh god finally they stopped. I had to shut down EVERYTHING related to DF in order to get it to stop. Never doing that again...

Yep, that was my experience as well. Never again.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Crazy import from elves...
« on: May 08, 2017, 09:13:37 pm »
If you can afford it, buy it. The elves will bring more to trade in the future and this could lead to a breeding pair of war tigers.
Not even close :(

Let alone war wombats of dooooom. I've had them bring me breeding pairs of lions, or tigers, or bears.
REMEMBER TUNNEL 17!!!

Honestly, make some prepared meals and glass serrated discs in a hurry, and buy it from them. You won't regret it.

I once had the elves bring me a whole stack of stuff made from forgotten beast silk. Those were elves who had had a serious adventure, getting there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bins in large bars/blocks stockpiles
« on: May 08, 2017, 07:52:55 pm »
I find I'm enjoying binless metal bar storage at the moment, due to the prettiness factor:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And it helps when I get a new squad of soldiers to put all their gear on if I have the armour and weapon stockpiles binless as well. Less queueing.

For melting lower-quality gear, I create a stockpile near the smelter that only accepts the lower quality items, then 'd' 'b' 'm' everything on it. Whether I add bins to that stockpile depends on how much recycling I have to be done.

Yeah, quality-specific stockpiles are your friend. One stockpile full of low-quality work next to the smelter. Another stockpile of high-quality "wear this now" work in the armour/weapon room. You can then go through the low-quality stockpile at any point and melt-designate.

My preferred method tends to be an atom smasher and a temporary garbage activity zone. Make sure nothing else is set to be dumped, go through the stockpile for all the unworn x and X items, dump 'em, wait, atom smash.

Takes a loooong time, but effective for getting rid of annoying clothing and seeds that just sit and clutter crap.

I do the same, but not atom smash: all my rags get sold to merchants. It's medieval to have a "rag man" anyhow.

But it would be awesome if we could take all the old broken down clothing and pulp it and turn it into paper, like in real life.

DF Suggestions / Re: Construct smooth walls
« on: May 08, 2017, 07:37:21 pm »
Make slab. Engrave image on slab. Make into wall. That's how it should be handled in my opinion.

I love that plan.

Now, on to the bucket: Milk kangaroos. Feed tiny langurs to make stonk and giant like them.

Oh, that is SO why it happened! Yes yes yes!

Are ettin farms a thing? ;)

They would be, I think, if there were a breeding pair, but it was one male ettin and he's dead now. So are three dwarves, and assorted animals.... It was an epic battle.

(but a migrant couple had two before being incinerated by a caterpillar).

This game. This sodding bloody beautiful game.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: drowning dwarves
« on: May 08, 2017, 05:37:06 am »
Urists useless pet drake, though, that gets put in the drowning chamber with pet dogs (they can't be wartrained), pet kittens, and pet guineacocks. Anyone brings a pet female bird gets to keep it in the fowlhouse, as those produce eggs just as well as the unnamed geese do.
That must be one hell of an unhappy fort...

You'd be surprised, an artifact statue in the main room and an unlimited supply of new clean socks seems to help a lot.

I've also been known to peg all the pets out on the surface just in time for the next goblin siege... I must be a horrible person.

also, hello thisfox ;)

Hello Sweetheart!

Haha, not a problem, at least you always seem to contribute with something usefull :P

I do my best to stay constructive. :)

A minotaur invaded, punched a cow a lot, collapsed from exhaustion, and was promptly stabbed. He must have had a rough life.

"Ah, finally someone from my race! Hello, friend! Is there a tavern around here that I could stay at?"
"Mooooo?"
"How dare you say that about my mother! Prepare to die!"

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf fortress specific PC?
« on: May 03, 2017, 04:42:51 pm »
I am playing with 70+fps on a 7-year-old Macbook Pro. It's the recent version of DF, no add-ons, and having practically no fps issues with a 5-year-old fort, with three aquifer-fed waterfalls and about 70-80 dorfs at a time. There were versions which didn't play well on Mac, but this version works fine. I often play a movie in the same machine whilst playing, or run various other things on the machine, without slowing it down any.

Are you following me, Great Sage, Equal of Heaven? I think that perhaps this is not my problem but instead yours {grin} Hey, this is even a monkey post! haha!

I realise they will not be tame, I'm just amused by the "a few facts" in red, when every other animal is not so labelled. Salmeuk is right, it's the dorfs who have the few facts not the langurs, but I am very amused by the dangerous concept of a set of angry apes in the woods with a few facts about us, and an ornate bucket. "They know too much!" indeed.

Can't get the little bastards into the sodding traps to be retamed at the moment. And I've been dealing with a not-so-amusing ettin attack.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I have some questions
« on: May 01, 2017, 11:55:09 pm »
I would love to breed dragons as well. So far, I've never captured a male and a female. You will need both genders to breed them. Wild animals which are captured and tamed, I'm told, won't ever be truly tame, but their babies will be. It's possible the caravan/visitors can tell the things aren't completely tame.

The eggs issue: I'm guessing you've already checked the wiki on this issue. Are your eggs being incubated, without the dwarfs interfering?

Any of these (and many more things) can prevent hatching:
- The dwarfs collect the eggs from the nest box.
- The Female is disturbed.
- The Female doesn't get touching contact with a Male of the same species (for fertilisation).
- Anything or anyone interrupts the process.

My recommendation is lock the male and female dragon in a closed area with a nesting box, and lock that door solid. Let them out when the eggs have hatched. Also bear in mind baby dragons aren't big, and stay small for many years.

The second problem: The tavern is giving visitors and citizens so much alcohol that they are getting drunk and starting fights. This is a common problem. The best thing to do is to not have a barkeeper, this usually makes the tavern a little less problematic. I've stopped having taverns because they're more trouble than they're worth at the moment.
