I like this. Not sure how well any of us could do this, but it'd be a brilliant addition to the game.

Well I'm moderately good at RAW work. Just from looking at examples and templates, I made a new creature from scratch, right from a blank notepad. He didn't act like I wanted, so I deleted him. It's slowed down my creature creation.

Goblins in the new version love humans. Hate everyone else. Same with kobolds. It appears humans have, normally, aligned themselves with goblins and kobolds. You just pissed off a diplomat most likely, and may have accidentally caused the future death of that human kingdom. Good job.

DF General Discussion / How can I get good FPS again?
« on: September 08, 2014, 02:28:43 pm »
My little computer ran vanilla 34.11 with an average of 100 FPS with no problem on 5X5 maps. Now, on a much stronger computer, with 4X4 maps, with some FPS enhancers, no temperature or weather, religious cleaning using DFHack and item atom smashing, I am lucky to get 50 FPS. 1 FPS is the average on my 34.11 machine. How do I get my FPS back? I never leave caverns with a path to my fortress, always walled off. I don't have more than 80 logs at a time, maybe cutting 3-4 trees a year. I atom smash used clothes and excess stone. I put all my solid food into roasts and stews. I don't do any huge projects like artificial lava waterfalls. Why does this new version kill my FPS so heavily?

There's a giant planet made almost entirely of liquid diamond. So should diamonds be removed from Earth because they're rather uncommon? Why should a world reportedly made from half insane deities be 100% like Earth? This is a fantasy game, not real life. Stop thinking of it like real life.

Werebeasts are either horrifyingly bad, like a well-timed weremammoth attack, or hilarious, like when my axe dwarves were charging the wereiguana, and he changed into a fourteen year old human boy, ran into a cage trap, and was placed in my dry moat. Moat full of werebeasts anyone?

Well okay. Knives are made for surgery with diamond edges though. But I guess I can leave them out. Also: how do you feel about adding in japanese swords? I'm thinking nodachi, katana, and wakizashi. Wakizashi being a higher velocity short sword, katana being long sword, and the nodachi being a faster two hand sword. They'd have a smaller contact area, meaning better armour penetration, but then they'd be less likely to cleave parts off, like probably no bifurcation.

He was a goblin. I never checked the combat report, just sat there in confusion. Maybe goblins renamed pikes scythes or something?

Well when a fire breathing, flying, full steel made demon shows up claiming to be a god... Yeah, I was scared he'd flip out at any second.

A friend of mine made adamantium be in the game: basically he made a weaker version of adamantine, but it was one part adamantine mixed with two parts steel. What resulted was basically a dark blue, stronger, lighter steel, less numerous than steel, more numerous than adamantine. In arena, it always lost to adamantine and the divine metals, but beat steel. I could recreate his adamantium, because he decided he didn't like it and deleted it. If anyone wants me to do so, I could.

DF Modding / Non-metal, effective weaponry?
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:48:17 pm »
I've been thinking of adding things like stone hammers, diamond swords, stone spears, and the like for a while now. I tried running a game without any forging or metal work at all, and actually found obsidian swords now do some damage, but not enough to be truly effective. This is somewhat different than I actually expected, as I've seen examples of obsidian knives being sharper than steel ones. But it's forgivable. You can't have a volcano pumping out better than steel swords, can you?

Back to the topic: would you like to see stone hammers and spears, so you could actually arm each peasant in certain emergencies, or a diamond sword, with an edge sharper than steel, maybe a diamond spear, or stone axes, which were used extensively by stone age civilizations? Tell me what you think, and I may add a tier of equipment made of stone to my creature pack that I'm working on. They'd probably be for your backup soldiers/militia, with your normal military using up the metal, while your reserve soldiers use stone weaponry.

Decided to make a 6 wide, 16 deep moat around my castle, just because. It's surrounded by fortifications, immediatly in front of walls, minus some ballista shot points, that so far haven't been used much. The roof I put on already does it's job, but a huge ditch with black and grizzly bears in the bottom never hurt. Man... I never knew how slow fifty legendary miners could dig.

Uhm... The hell? I was trying to take on an invading army with 14 companions, when the apparent leader showed up: he was labeled as a scythemaster!! Were scythes put in as a weapon, and we just weren't told? I don't have any weapon mods in, and, in my confusion, I didn't take screenshots, but with three slashes this guy cut off my hand, cut open my head, then decapitated me. If I see even the word scythe anywhere, I'll screen shot it. Has anyone else seen that?

DF Suggestions / Bring back Demonic Fortresses.
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:56:25 am »
Some people might not have been lucky enough to find one, but a demonic fortress was basically a sealed can of evil feature underground which let you "safely" breach hell, by 100% controlling when you went in. I happened to find them a few times, and enjoyed the challenge of actually fighting my way through hordes of undead to fight my way to the breach into hell. I'm assuming they were replaced in a way by vaults, but still, they were a great feature. It was an interesting way to get to hell, and still fit in with the adamantine canes, as the demons couldn't leave it, but you could break through from the outside.

If Toady had included NATO rifle rounds in the game with no use, would you be clamoring for AK-47s to shoot them with? Or would you be suggesting that the anachronistic bullets just be removed instead? This is obviously a more extreme example (on purpose, to more clearly stimulate intuition), but the logic is exactly the same.

No, it's not. You're suggesting it's ridiculous to use real world alloys, just because aluminum is a bit hard to obtain, and it's different than what humans in the real world did, because of limited access to aluminum. Dwarves in Dwarf Fortress have access to many times more aluminum than the supposed era humans had, and are quite different than humans. The only reason humans of the same era that Dwarf Fortress is set in didn't use aluminum bronze is because of limited access and no way to refine it in large quantities, which the dwarves have, if aluminum was made more common. There's no reason not to use this, and close to none of your arguments have been accurate or Dwarf Fortress related, you're thinking of it like humans in the 1200's having access to tons of aluminum, not dwarves in Dwarf Fortress.
