DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack

To those mentioning the "python installer" issues - assuming you mean PyInstaller, that cannot possibly be the issue because Armok Vision is written in C#, and has nothing to do with Python at all.

i was talking about pylnp package.  some people have reported getting false positive maleware hits from pyinstaller packages.

but that wasn't it.  windows defender is reporting the maleware directly on armok vision executable.  kind of annoying that i have to disable it every time i run df.  and remember to activate it again several hours later.  lol.

i was just worried about 3rd party tampering but as you said, that cannot be it.  i'm not at all worried about the original files.  the author is kind enough to offer the sources.

windows defender is reporting dangerous trojans in armok vision.exe during unzip of the latest package.  is anyone else getting this?
dementia reported something similar in the Masterwork thread.  It is probably a false positive, but you can download Armok Vision from the original repository if you're worried.

tried it.  getting trojan hits on those too.

[edit]

reporting:
maltule.c!cl
rundas!plock

both are listed as severe threats

[edit 2]

the issue is likely caused by the python installer packager.

Too late! I got the whole thing. Now, which one should I play first? 2, 3, or 4?

3 before 4, 2 anytime.

3 is my fav.  enjoyed 2, 4 is a bit too wonky (and if i'm calling an sr game too wonky, it's *really* out there!).  it has some of the best superhero mechanics i've seen in any game and other developers should take note.  only problem is, in 4 once you get your superhero powers, you won't be doing much driving anymore and the game loses some of its classic charm.

is there a way to force a certain number of imps to work at a specific job?  i keep getting no milling being done messages and there are plenty of imps around and only 1 or 2 imps working the farm.

There was good reason to expect something newer.
The origianl 8 games shown were very interesting titles like
Dragon age 1 and 2.
Mass Effect 2.
Dead Space 2

With those games being the main titles most people buying the bundle probably expected the remaining 4 "secret" games to be Mass Effect and Dead Space 1 to set the player up for the eventual purchase of the third game from the respective series (especially considering you could export Sheppy from game to game) and there weren't really many other known games EA could throw in there.

i might buy it just for the nostalgia factor.  i'll probably end up claiming the keys but never downloading them :/

I find it interesting that so many people judge the value of a game by how many hours they'll play it.

i use a bang per buck ratio.  divide how much i paid for the game with how many hours i've played it.

generally, if the result is around 1, the game is okay.
greater than 1, the game is kinda awful and gets more awful the higher the number
the closer it gets to zero, the more awesome the game.

a couple of examples:

skyrim = 0.06 == awesome
running with rifles = 0.375 == awesome (projected .188 -- will only get better because i'll probably put in 12 more hours)
dwarf fortress = 0.01  == and still going down!
starlight inc. = 12.32 == this game is crap
fight the dragon = 1 == breaks even.  might get a little better, but i doubt it.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI
That's a really fun game. It's pure strategy, though. Don't expect much of the semi-RPG focus of other instalments. There's no wandering officer for hire mode, just being a ruler and commanding armies. There are still the requisite personal battles and 'disputes', and you can marry your officers, iirc, but all that is in service of managing a kingdom and generally just being a warlord.

That said, I love it. Fantastic visual design and heroic battles. Really captures the feel of the period, as imagined in the novel (this game made me attempt to read the books, but I can't say I ever managed to finish the undertaking - at some point it becomes a boring Zhuge Liang wankfest - although I'll always remember Liu Bei eating a guy's wife).

I don't know about the difficulty. Maybe the first few tries, when you still learn how it all works. There's a point when it even becomes trivial to win, and all that's left to enjoy is the feeling of living through some heroic deeds. But there's a period in-between stumbling around and expertise when the game feels challenging and really, really fun.

You should be able to squeeze a few good hours of enjoyment out of this one.

i haven't played this series since the original.  did they remove the hard-coded time limit of a mongol invasion?

i would love to see the classic dune 2 make a come back with a more modern unit control gui.

With a total game overhaul, or still a basic port of the old game into a new UI?

Not like this thing?  http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/old-games/dune-2000.php

which I guess is like 15 years old now.  holy fuck.

edit:  omg, its actually 20 years old.  I thought it had come out significantly later than that, I guess "2000" still seemed futuristic back in 1995.

also, found this:  http://forum.dune2k.com/topic/20346-list-of-dune-ii-clones-and-remakes/

some of those look promising.

But yeah, dry as old breadcrumbs.  I think what I learned from it, is that I just don't enjoy RTS games any longer.  It isn't the days of Dune and Warcraft any more, and the only RTS I've been able to enjoy since then was Homeworld.

ascii graphics are like an explosion in an alphabet soup factory.  it does't need imagination and it requires the brain to readjust to read the screens.
however, if you're playing a game like df, you're not playing it for the graphics but for what it provides.  not having a good basic graphics set hurts the game in the long run, but there are tile sets that alleviate much of the problem.

hoot!  i actually started writing a program for this years ago, then that bastard, universe, took me on a wild ride to places i never expected and the project ended up abandoned.

i'm happy to see someone made a decent program for this great book series.  i still have most of them (the actual books!) somewhere in storage.

I started back with my Nord hitty-things hero character last night, and found that he was unable to sneak.  Moved over to the Altmer sneaky glowy bastard character, had the same problem.  Hitting the sneak button did nothing.

Anyone encounter this problem before?  Any fixes?

check your sneak key binding.
