What I find interesting is that the game makes it a point to make Mercenaries expensive "only if you don't have the right units" kind of guys.

And that other games USUALLY treat mercenaries the same way. Medieval 2 total war sometimes made them useful but it was pretty rare.

Yet in real life... Mercenaries were quite often better then the regular army.

Mount and Blade is sometimes weird.

perhaps if you compare mercenary companies vs regular armies.  the mercenaries in m&b are just another unit type.  you can play as a mercenary company that kicks the ass of any of the royalist units.

the concept behind this game reminds me of the 1990 game imperium (electronic arts).  the names are oddly similar too.  was that game an inspiration to this game?

i'll be almost sad to see this one end.  managed to trap 1 bunny.  gbtw and i just missed a cow. and built a secure room in the nether.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun and I'd be inclined to host it for an extended period of time however, I hate how it divides the  community between two separate servers. Eventually I'd like to host multiple worlds on a single server and connect them together with mods like Multiverse or something similar.

if was fun while it lasted and while these survival worlds are 'fun' to visit, i wouldn't want to live there.

i think with everyone involved and over several days, our total iron harvesting totaled to 5 bars.

the only time i get a follower in skyrim is to complete a daedric quest.

at one time, i used them as mules, but then i just started using the console to give me oodles of carry capacity.

a good way to handle essential npc is to have them fall unconscious if you "kill" them.  and they should stay down until you leave the region.  while they are unconscious, you'll have to option of performing a coup de grace knowing full well that you can break some quest lines by doing so (and even break the main quest, so beware of using this).

planescape:torment.  i would rate it as one of the best games ever made, don't know how it holds up to modern hardware though.

I hope you don't think they are using their own troops to garrison, because they aren't. They just spawn troops when they capture a fortress or town.

the troops they spawn is a pitifully small garrison.  you can take it back easy if you attack right away.  then harass the main force outside of the castle.  individual lords will eventually break off and do their own thing.

So, git M&B from GoG.

Now, I'm in a bit of a rage inducing situation. See, I'm with Swadia, and I want a castle. Now, I HAVE gotten castles, but I can't hold it.

Swadia has been at war with the Khergits for ages. I have gotten various castles, but when I do, it is guaranteed that the Khergits will come (with 1000 horsemen in tow) and take it in about a day.

Now the biggest issue. I am essentially the only effective lord in the kingdom, as most lords are either busy patrolling their turf endlessly, while the others are scattered everywhere  making small attacks and getting captured.

What do B12? What do?

i don't know if this will work for you, but in warband, i used attrition against great odds.  leave a tiny garrison, while you take a small army and harass and skirmish them along the edges (before they actually get to your castle).
if they are already there, let them take it.  they will leave a small garrison and move on to another target.  go immediately in and take it back.

since they are kerghits, i usually just tank them on the field.  an army of about 60 huscarls can take on a 1000 mounted screaming khergits.

how often does the map update?

an army of huscarls is the most powerful force in the game, nothing can stand up to them.
coming in second as the most powerful mobile force in the game are mamluks.

it's been a while since i played, but one strategy that worked for me was to run backwards while swinging a long pole armed weapon.  i think great axe was the one i used.
