Distant Worlds has good automation of as much of the game as you want to automate. 

If you use some of the big Mod packs, MOO3 was a good "Macro Management" game.  I think it got panned a little unfairly.

looks okay, but i'm hesitant to dish out $60 for yet another 4x space game that will probably disappoint me.

moo2 still remains my all time favorite, but i think i'm good and done with that franchise.

The nationalism might have been what brought me to really dislike the Stormcloak questline.  As I was playing through it, my approval went from "Rebels, yeah!" to "I picked the wrong side." to, at the end, where Tullius dies, "Dammit, where's the undo button?"

yeah.  all it takes is a visit to windhelm to realize, something's rotten in the camp of stormcloaks.

This game is so much fun.

I don't want to take either side of the civil war, though. There should be a middle ground one where you bitch-slap both sides until they stop fighting. I suppose there is probably a mod for that, but I was hoping to play through the game in vanilla at least once before I go down that road.

i took the side of ulfric in one playthrough, i felt like such a shit for betraying jarl balgruuf that i've never taken the side of the rebels in any other playthrough.  i wish there was a way to convince balgruuf to take the rebel side.

4x space games are among my favorite genre, but they get tedious after a while.

I would recommend a Grassland/Savanah/Shrubland biome embark with Wilderness (not Untamed Wilds) savagery.

hehe.  good advice a bit too late for my first try.  went into untamed wilds forested area and my dwarves spent a couple seasons trying to take down a crippled giant hedgehog. i had to abandon it because dwarves were dying of dehydration.. it died by itself after a while.  not a total failure (had 20k+ in wooden trade goods) so instead of a hunting lodge, the encampment turned into a woodcrafter factory.

this is the embark profile i used.  i'll make some tweaks and try again tomorrow. in the suggested wilderness savannah.  building copper spears though will require a few more things in the profile and i don't know if i can fit them all.  maybe forget about bringing in crossbows and bolts and just build a few wooden ones on site.

thinking of starting an all hunter/trapper embark after my current fortress finishes burning down.
any suggestions on embark profile, location and starting strategy?

the concept is to build an above ground hunting lodge.  some builds; carpentry, butchery, tanning/leather working, craftsdwarf for bone carving.  presumably i'll be able to sell some leather and bone goods to the first caravan in exchange for seeds, drink, picks and maybe an anvil and some live poultry.

i haven't tried adventure mode yet.  can you embark into fortress mode after amassing a fortune and hiring a competent crew?
