DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My First Vampire
« on: April 08, 2016, 02:49:12 pm »
Apparently they can.  My only installed chain is an artifact chain in the baron's room, which is also right next to the hospital.  So when I convict him I get the notification that VAMPIRE has become a hammerer.  He trundles off to the nobles bedroom, chains himself up, and goes to town on his left arm, torso, and both legs.  Then someone will carry him to the hospital, where he gets better.  This last conviction he went from the hospital back to the barons room, became a hammerer again, and beat himself again.  When I checked on him in the hospital, he was glad his sentence had been reduced.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What's better down, up stairs or ramps?
« on: April 07, 2016, 11:20:18 am »
I typically make 3x3 columns of stairs that go from the surface to the bottom (but actually stop at the first cavern encountered) and I can't remember ever having a dwarf fall down a set of stairs.

Wagons will roll down ramps that are three spaces wide.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Locations menu not accessible...?
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:43:53 pm »
The l lists locations that exist.  Things that can belong to locations have a menu to add a new location.  For instance i-m and designate a meeting area, then a to add a location.  (I don't have the game open, so it might not be a, but it is in the menu.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When you first dig down?

A down on the surface, and up/down each level below that.

I've taken to making ramps though.  I channel a 3 wide block, then drop down one level and channel an adjacent 3 wide block, then down again and another channel, etc.

Ok, this vampire is hilarious.  Using the noble screen I assigned him to be the hammerer.  Every time he kills someone I convict him.  AND HE DOES HIS JOB.  After each murder he ends up in the hospital because he beats the holy crap out of himself.  He is still horrified that he kills people, and feels shaken by his self inflicted injuries, and loathing because he beat himself.  This last murder, he beat himself twice!

What about the master relationship?  What does that mean?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tips for picking an embark site
« on: April 04, 2016, 11:25:10 am »
I found a volcano sticking out of a glacier, and the entire cone was inside a 1x1 embark, so I embarked there.  Sadly, a giant magma tube doesn't leave much room for dwarves to live in.

DF Gameplay Questions / My First Vampire

I had a corpse drained of blood.  There were about a dozen witnesses, all children.  A bit suspicious there, but what's the chance that Toady implemented mass false accusation by gangs of children, right?

So I had the vampire beaten, then I drafted him to fight an ettin.  I'm pretty certain he lost both a foot and a hand.  He seems to be better now though.  Which I wasn't expecting.  I was sort of looking forward to have a gimp vampire that had to hobble around.  Is it normal for vampires to heal like that?

I built a slab, and the slab says he is a vampire and killed the dwarf as accused by all those children, so I'm pretty sure I have the right vampire.  But if he was seen doing it, why doesn't he have a kill list when I view him?

But now I'm looking at him, and he is "unfocused after being unable to acquire alcohol" (I'd run out, and the whole fort was drinking water).  Is it normal for a vampire to crave alcohol?  I thought they didn't drink anymore?

His relationships list a master for him.  I've never seen anyone with a master.  Should that have been a red flag before the death?

His thoughts indicate that he was horrified to see the dwarf he killed die.  Is it normal for vampires to be affected by what they do?

Since I've never had a vampire before, I've left him alone after the initial beating.  He seems to spend all his time socializing, and no one else has turned up dead.  But it hasn't been a year yet. How often should I expect him to kill someone?

UPDATE:  He is discussing pulmonary medicine with someone.   I'm not sure if I should find that amusing or if I should prepare a coffin.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Reclaiming is....weird?
« on: March 26, 2016, 08:59:42 pm »
No, I reclaimed something else, not my original embark.  Some other site that the game created.  It has a functioning tavern in it.  And a trade depot.  And a giant underground structure all the way down to the magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Reclaiming is....weird?
« on: March 26, 2016, 08:44:24 pm »
I haven't had time to play for a long time.  Since 42.03 came out.  I downloaded the latest version, made a world, and saw a piece of magma in the frozen ice, so I did a 1x1 embark there.  It was a poor choice.  The magma took up most of my embark, and for some reason my miner climbed to the rim and couldn't get back down.  So I told him to channel out the entire rim.  Magma poured down on everything, and my fortress was lost.  So I decided to try the reclaim option, since I never had.  I went back to that fort to see what the magma had done.  It appears nothing happened.  The rim was still gone, but magma was no longer cascading out.  It was just pooled up there.  So I abandoned it.

But when I had tried to reclaim it I noticed there were lots of things to reclaim that weren't mine.  So I reclaimed again.  My embark had a giant building, with a dwarf living in it (and an @ sign character model).  There was a shaft down that lead to something.  I saw a room filled with armor down there, so I designated a food stockpile next to it to force dwarves down to it.  I found more dwarves.  A baron, a baroness, a queen consort, a baroness consort, three human guests, and three magma crabs.

What?

What have I found here?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Defensive Dwarven Childcare?

I had an odd thought over lunch today.

Has anyone ever killed a forgotten beast (or titan) with a minecart canon that fires dwarven babies?

DF Gameplay Questions / My king likes...
« on: December 31, 2015, 07:19:14 pm »
My king likes the sight of The Pristine Luxury.  It's the last item, after the mink men for their long bodies.

I can't figure out what The Pristine Luxury is though.  Neither "pristine" nor "luxury" find it when I search all the findable strings in legends.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problems with a dwarf in fey mood

AThus, be prepared to build one after the other (or all in parallel) of the shops you don't have when a moody dorfs doesn't claim a shop.

You mean build a coffin, right?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Kids playing outside

I had two kids play make believe in the pile of goblin corpses for more than a year.  Not even the snowstorm dissuaded them.
