I can't wait until the prof does a google search on Dwarf Fortress and finds this thread

Yeah I understand that, not really my thing though.  I feel like there is something about the aesthetic of ASCII and roguelikes in general that always gets lost when these games are given actual graphics.  But to tell the truth I'd enjoy working on an alternate tile/spriteset that works to preserve that, so maybe I'll start up a little project about it once this gets further along
I already have a bit of that done. They're dead easy to make. Find my tileset thread... edit: found. Is 16x16 though.

Whoa.  I wasn't talking about such a direct translation but that is pretty cool!

this looks great, nice job all

I have to say though I think the graphics are too happy: DF (and roguelikes in general) has always seemed to me to be a very dark game.  Which is fine, I think its best if people can choose whatever graphics they want, but I hope there will be the capability to make your own tilesets

When I was considering the original style I wanted to go with on the tiles, I considered something really grim and gritty for a while... but for some reason, the perverse irony of cartoony dwarves building magma-powered deathtraps that they dump on diplomats and the bourgeoisie, and cleaving cartoony goblins in two with big shiney axes was too great to pass up.

There's something decidedly "Itchy and Scratchy" or "Ren and Stimpy" about it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Regarding Digging enemies
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:58:13 pm »
I think one way to work this out is to make digging for everyone, player and non player civs, much more time consuming and difficult, so much so that it wouldn't be considered by the siege troops unless the player is turtling for a lengthy amount of time--where then the siege troops would have to actually set up a sort of camp or little cave and work to sustain themselves (I would also like to see siege camps in general).  So that, if you get tunneled, it's only because you were too cowardly or not a good enough scout or something.

or for less organized molemen, who would be more of a nuisance.

IN ALL SERIOUSNESS I always found it weird that dwarves are content to eat phallic fungi all day--they should be demanding real meat!

DF Suggestions / Re: Stronghold-style Fortress
« on: August 20, 2009, 01:30:23 am »
I think this would be cool if it was implemented along with World generation, such as, world gen would go along as normal until it reached a certain potentially interesting battle/encounter (goblins invading a fortress or something), and you can choose whether or not to take control.  When you take control world gen pauses and then whatever you make happen happens and then world gen continues as normal.  It'd be a nice way to get more involved in the history of worlds :)

I think this should expand to the entrances to fortresses and stuff.  I mean, right now most fortress entrances will amount to a pair of doors stuck in the side of a mountain.  We need huge doors that take levers and pulleys to open, giant engravings up the side of the mountain, and giant statues carved out of the mountain (like Rushmore) or built outside the gates.  The entrances should certainly be a point of pride for the dwarves.

"I.B: Remove good/evil regions and add more specific associations instead"

I want to know what this one entails.

This isn't supposed to sound condescending, but ASCII is the niche, not graphical representations.

ASCII is a Graphical Representation, though.

Hm, I would say ASCII is more like a mix of abstract/iconic/textual representations.  "S" is no way graphically representative of a giant cave spider.
