Is the population trigger for each race actually working? By the end of year three I usually have enough dwarves to trigger all the sieges, so it's kind of hard to tell.

Do dwarven children (and children in general, I presume) get any negative thoughts if there are no toys to play with? Also, how does a child determine which toys they can play with? Will they just take things they like from the stockpile? Wouldn't this cause some issues if you intend to trade those items?
- Urist McChild has bestowed the name Magma the Death of Elves on a copper mini-forge.
- Urist McChild is depressed due to the sale of a favorite toy
- Dwarven Children are performing a satirical play based on the loss of Magma the Death of Elves the copper mini-forge
- Urist McChild is tantruming!!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves don't grieve for friends and family

Mothers still go mental when their babies are savaged by giant rats and fall into underground pools. So that's something I guess.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adventure Mode Mining
« on: September 30, 2015, 11:57:26 pm »
For the same reason anything else in the development plan isn't in yet, the game isn't finished. Rest assured, it is planned, so sometime over the next 15 years or so you'll be able to build, mine and everything else fortress dwarves get up to.
To pass the time, I believe there's a Dfhack mod which allows you do it.

Even though it seems so obvious, it's actually not. When you think about it,  if you can build/mine wherever you like, logically so should everyone else be able to. Can a goblin build a tunnel to the capital? How does that effect future success at sieges around the world. Why attack through the front gate, when you can just dig through the wall? Are players going to stand for having their meticulously designed fortresses fubar'd by pick-happy gnomes desperate for the booze pile, etc, etc.

DF Suggestions / Re: Clothes Stockpile (Torn)

I haven't tried it, but don't the stockpile quality settings help?
Or is a worn masterwork still a masterwork?

Did you miss the last 23 releases? They were predominantly hot-fixes and other assorted bug stomping. Just as the next 20 or so releases after this big one will be.
You could always just not pay Toady if you disagree with the way he's always worked.

8092
Toady has announced he fixed the biggest part of the issues with sieges for the next release (a world map pathfinding bug)...
While this game of Chinese Whispers across the forum really is entertaining, I feel I should quote what Toady actually said in case anyone forgot. If you still interpret this as 'The next version has sieges galore', then that's great, hope you're right!

There was one pathing error that has been fixed for the next version that should improve the frequencies in some cases (some mountain embarks).  We'll have to see where it goes from there.

Although I always cursed the friends of nature & forces of darkness (mostly the Giant animals they brought, which were 10x more dangerous), that old saying holds true: 'You don't know what you've got till it's gone' :'(  I'm curious what kinds of amusement other Dorfs have created while visitors are on vacation.
If you mean how are we passing the time until the visitor release, I'm trying out the Fortress Defence mod, experimenting with tileset/font/graphic combinations and stuff.

If you were referring to the way some people seem to end up with no sieges recently, then I guess I'd recommend the Fortress Defence mod again. Lots of Fun so far.

please tell me more about this visitor release :) i'm curious
Part of the imminent(ish) new release. Fortress visitors to stay at your taverns, drink your booze and fight each other. Goblins, elves, dwarves and gorlacks all in the same room with an endless flow of ale. What could possibly go wrong...?

Even contains a bug fix for lost siegers that may or may not help the lack of foes issue (I'm skeptical...).

8094
Interesting. Might just be my choice of embark then.
Goblins apparently finished off my fort less than a year after I retired it. Must send in an adventurer to take revenge.

No sieges in first two years of the new fort. Elf and Human caravans showed up though. Wonder why they never came to the last place? It's only just down the road with all the same neighbours. Pathing bug?

8095
How much did you modify the production and trade tags in this mod?
I assume it's still suffering from the same pathing bug that vanilla has, but I had more goblin attacks playing this than I've ever seen before. Makes me wonder if fixing the bug will have much of an effect at all.

We're all alpha testers...

But yeah, sounds like a bug. Although he could be the King. Aren't non-Dwarf nobles treated as pets in the current version?

DF Suggestions / Re: Music, instruments, and sounds and things.

That would be a lot of fun. Just very tiny extracts of a 'tune' as you pass by the tavern would be fine. Plus the ability to extract instruments from Legends for people to fiddle with and produce listenable authentic soundtracks for the more musical let's plays.

I have been unable to find these two tools in a version that works with the latest Dwarf Fortress, and with several months of searching and despair I'm finally asking where to get them and how to install them? Direct links please, I have tried googling and searching the forums as far as my skills allow, but for some unfathomable reasons have always failed on my own.
Just a random thought, but you are running the latest version of Dwarf Fortress (0.40.24), right? It actually seems a lot harder to find utilities for older versions of DF.

Still, clothing size isn't something you can learn.
Why not? People aren't all one size, you know.
After hundreds/thousands of years of living together you'd think Dwarf tailors would have figured out the dimensions of a human by now. It's not like human visitors to your fort are the first encounter with an alien race...
