DF Gameplay Questions / Engraving memorial slabs
« on: July 22, 2022, 05:32:25 am »
When engraving a memorial slab at the craftsdwarf's workshop, is there any way to determine which units in the list might come back as ghosts and which won't?  Pets and enemies do not return to haunt the living, but often have very similar names to the dwarves in the fort who do.  Most of the time, the deceased can be recovered and entombed, but there are a lot of raising bridges in this fort, and a rather dangerous waterfall that has killed more dwarves than any invasion so far.  All unrecoverable.

Last time I tried, exposing tiles to the sun marks them as outdoors, so even if they are floored over with brimstone later, they'll still grow surface crops.  I'm not sure though if this method also affects cave adaptation.  Other than seeing Dwarved vomiting or nauseated by the sun, I'm not sure how one would monitor cave adaptation.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to dig holes
« on: July 18, 2022, 08:09:57 pm »
If you're in a rush, and want a single 1x1 clean hole with magma in it, just equip the unfortunate miner with a copper pick, and everything will disappear before too long.  I usually just dig a maintenance tunnel and build walls around each magma well location, eventually re-purposing the area into weapons storage or something, so the tunnels don't go unused forever.

Spoiler: Magma forge wells (click to show/hide)

If they're really intent on not leaving any time soon, you could set up ballistas and take them out that way.  It may take some time to land a hit if you don't have any trained ballista operators, but a skilled siege operator can send a ballista arrow many screens away with just 1 or 2 tiles wide of a shot pattern.

I had a dream as I was falling asleep where I was splicing 2 wires together and got shocked.  I immediately jumped awake as my whole body twitched.  It was so soon into the dream, that I sort of still thought I was not yet asleep.  I was obviously shocked to find out that I was indeed already asleep.

I trade them away the moment there's even a single x and that helps but unfortunately some littering is unavoidable.

DFHack's sorting of the trade list makes this super easy.  Just filter by name, 'x' and cntrl+<Enter> marks the whole page.  Just be careful not to trade away any prized ibex leather goods you might want to keep.

If it's not worn socks, it's blood and vomit all over my forts.  Dwarven life is messy

You might try making a nudist colony.  I'd expect stress issues there, so the military option seems the best way to deal with clothing mess (aside from your miners and woodcutters)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I get my dwarves to write?

A book about Advancements in Badger Training sounds like it would naturally be a Dwarven best seller.  But if I'm not mistaken, advancements in various sorts of animal training are more related to what your animal trainers are doing than your scholars, and won't end up in their books.

Apparently if you get pulled over by the police in France they can punch the windows out of your car if you don't show them your mirage certificate.

That's 1 way to check if your car windows are indeed a mirage or not.  Any non-mirage windows must be properly registered and issued their certificates of physicality.  Strange rule, but the dream French can do as they please

I believe in free will because the mind seems to be independent of the body.  When we dream, we have a dream body, and experience dream worlds.  So I think there's much more to us as living beings than just the physical aspect of cells, chemicals, electric energy, etc.  The mind is not a physical thing, and can't be measured.  The brain can, but it's not the mind.  I see it as like a car and a driver.  If the driver were the mind, and invisible, we would still be able to see the pedals and other controls move around, and how that results in the car operating out on the road.  In a similar way, we can see all the chemical / electrical signals and activity in the brain and how they result in movement and emotion, but that's just due to our mind operating our physical body.  We're not actually observing the mind itself.  Recognizing this independence of body and mind, I can choose to act despite emotion, and despite hardship, going against the grain in life.  Or I can do what is easy and familiar.  It very much feels like a choice I consciously make.  I suppose there can be the illusion of conscious choice, but that would imply everything else is similarly an illusion, and so all things being equal, there is still equally valid conscious choice occurring in that illusory world.

I know not everyone will agree with this, and that's fine.  I just wanted to share why I personally believe in free will.

Because if the rather unfortunate cavern placement, I had to make rather unorthodox design decisions.

That includes the entire fort being pushed to the left of the screen. My symetry senses tingle constantly.

That's when you just build thousands of stone blocks and make the caverns dwarvenly stick to your original plan.

I've been playing around with forbidding materials for strange moods, and training dwarves just enough in certain skills, and it paid off with an artifact steel sword.  The next goal I suppose should be to find some adamantine.

Actually, my spoiler comment above reminds me
...
I wouldn't mind assigning all of my animal dissector migrants to power a fort's machinery, as this facilitate a use for these dwarves. Perhaps even a giant hamster (tame), if such a thing were possible. Apologies if this is more line with a suggestion, but this has actually confused me for a while.

I don't see why someone couldn't pretent pumps are treadmills and have those migrants pump water through some water wheels to generate power for the machinery.

Is it bad that I just want to tune out of all the politics, ignore the news and just focus that energy on trying to be a more kind person in my little slice of existence?  There's constant disagreement, and pretty much nothing I say or do affects the big news items anyway.  I feel like the only result of paying attention to any of it is that I have more concerns and stress...

He self-indicted after just walking in front of the house with the tools? Big brain advice from the sis too.... Aaah I want to cackle except we live in a postfactual age and I can smell dumb bullshit coming from 120 miles away... This should be the perfect trojan horse... If this guy is guilty imagine how much worse it would be to break and enter some official shit... I'm afraid to find out how galaxy brains will twist themselves to "relate" these two incidents together. Not even gonna name the other one.

I suppose he would be guilty of conspiracy to commit an assassination, rather than actual attempted assassination.  Certainly a big difference between the two.  I don't know if there are any penalties for simply planning a crime though.  That borders on the line of a Minority Report sort of dystopia, whereas up until the act has been committed, I think people can come to their senses and change their minds.  It sounds like the presence of the security team was enough of a catalyst for this guy to do that.  But there also seems to be a gray area where the crime has started but was not completed where some sort of consequences would be useful as a deterrent to others.  Like if you shoot at someone and miss, that seems more of a crime than just shooting at a trash can, even if the results are the same.

Just wanted to share my most recent !fun!:
That's quite an epic start, do you have any plans for revenge on that web-spitting eyeless frog?  I think you should find a way to capture it and harvest its webs, or maybe release it on some invaders?

Will there ever be Randomly generated Martial Arts? Will dwarven children ever play-spar with each other and get combat experience?

I don't know about future plans, but if you're interested in Dwarven fighting techniques, this thread is great:
Kisat Dur: the Dwarven Martial Art

Given the wide array of combat options, I suppose it's in a large part, up to the player to create or follow a particular fighting style.
