I'll take a dorf!

Name: LordBrassroast
Profession: Scientist (just make me write science-y stuff if you can control that  :D)

Thob Steamyboat, the chemist and mathematician, is yours!

Her description is here: http://imgur.com/3h9U4Xj

I even translated her nickname into dwarven for that extra touch. Now, if I could only figure out how to insert imgur pictures into forum posts...

DF Community Games & Stories / Diamonddreams, the Dwarven Library! [42.03]
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:50:11 am »
My cunning plan is to create a fortress like no other - based not on fighting, but on peaceful study, writing and arts. Diamonddreams will consist of a library tower, living quarters, a tavern and a cathedral, but little else. Dwarves will be refined and intelligent, writing books and pondering philosophy. The arts will also be encouraged, with dancing and poetry.

Even the sub-class of servants and workers who mine, smith and farm will be cultured and refined.

This will not be a succession fortress, but you can be dorfed if you wish, and rename them. I will be updating from the point of view of the dwarf/ves I choose as my avatars in DF.

It is a small world with frequent minerals and 550 year history. Its name is the Land of Vision - perhaps an omen?

The Praised Knowing Scholars shall strike the earth! Or, rather, their servants Likot, As and Rigoth will. They'll probably just talk.

Dwarves:
- As Bankringed: Proficient Engraver, Adequate Miner, Novice Reader. Servant Class.
- Rigoth Entracedtowns: Proficient Engraver, Competent Musician, Competent Singer, Adequate Miner, Novice Reader. Servant Class (1st narrator.)
- Likot Tradepaddles: Adequate Miner, Adequate Brewer, Adequate Grower, Novice Reader. Servant Class.

- Ber Splashbanners: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Fluid Engineer, Novice Diagnostician, Novice Surgeon, Novice Bone Doctor, Novice Reader. Expedition Leader (2nd narrator.)
- Feb Ragdune: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Poet, Adequate Geographer, Novice Reader.
- Nomal Whipman: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Astronomer, Adequate Optics Engineer, Novice Reader.
- Thob Steamyboat (a.k.a. LordBrassroasts, Ilul Konosibesh): Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Chemist, Adequate Mathematician, Novice Reader. Dorfed by Lord Brassroasts.

Good work my friend! I wouldn't use this, but good work anyway!

Dwarves in the Night's Watch.

Tyrion Lannister is bros with the King Beneath the Mountain.
Night Watch dwarves for sure - in fact, several tantrumers are sent there as punishment. Surprisingly, they actually quite like it.

Here's a link to a WorldGen setting for Westeros: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16544039/Westeros.txt

Just copy/paste that text into the data/init/world_gen.txt file (using the "Medium World" values), and you should be able to start up a GoT world.

In fact, I think I'll check that out myself... Seems like it's only the continent to the East of the Narrow Sea.

Looking forward to reading your story.

I'll check that out. In case there is any confusion though, I'm not actually trying to make a playthrough (though I ought to), I'm actually trying to write a fanfiction.

Hmm. It entirely depends on how you're interpreting the dwarves - are they relatively normally portrayed or are they the ridiculous insane occasional demon-ripping drunken bastards that happen in some forts, with the ability to build an entire wall in less than a day, mine with the speed of lightning, etc. Hard to say beyond that.

...
Oh, necromancers. Vampires. Werebeasts. Those'd fuck with most everything in Westeros, I'd think.
Maybe have an adventurer pop up.
I'm going for a mix in between - dwarves coher to reality a bit more, but they are still hugely strong for their size and the fortress champion has no skin or nerves due to an encounter with a forgotten beast. Like an even more terrifying Sandor Clegane.

I am planning for them to have a caged werebuffalo.

Huh, well that looks interesting. This world is really coming alive.

Why stop with just 1 fortress?

Get a perfect world-gen of Westeros in one continent and another continent on the east.

Then start / retire fortresses in different areas of the map.

Castle black on the north where you can do a mega project of building 7z high ice walls that connects from west to east.  A men only embark, with females all burrowed in Mole town.

You can even change the raws to allow human embarks.

I'd probably not end up playing a fort and just read legends of different seeds if the world-gen terrain is close to GoT world.
I mean, I could, but I am trying to write a story, not play the game.

I dunno if or when I'll finish this, but it's a fun project. Basically, the mountainhome is moved to the Stark lands using a portal found in a deep cavern, and the dwarves make peace with the Starks and swear fealty. They are lead by a minotaur who is the son of a lady minotaur who fooled the dwarves into believing she was a living goddess, a la Byed Beautyfoolish from Castlemarkets. He wears a set of artifact armour with an artifact bronze shield and greatsword, all forged from the corpse of the bronze colossus who killed his mother. He takes this as a sign of Armok's blessing.

The dwarves become integrated into Stark life to a certain extent, and they become well liked. Then, the events in the books begin. Ned Stark, despite the legendary dwarves in his guard, is captured and executed. The dwarves hold a private ceremony in which it rains blood, proving to them that Armok wants vengence. They call their banners - the forts of their civilisation - to war. They march south with the Stark army, and smash anything in their way.

So, what I want to know is - any suggestions? Any ideas for interactions, battles, characters?

What is this awesome sounding tool?

Thought you might be interested to see a previous attempt at this - an abandoned(?) mod called the Ark Project. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Modification:Ark_Project
Thanks Button.

I'm going to have to go on hiatus for a month or so, as I am moving house. I will try to and update/release this, but it will be infrequently.

Well, it shows up now for some reason, but wouldn't fight.  :o

Maybe the modded attack has something to do with it:
[CREATURE_VARIATION:MANTIS_SHRIMP_PINCER_ATTACK]
Wonder why the 2kg aquatic fish doesn't want to run around the arena fighting. Try a 40kph speed instead of 1 kph, see if it moves in the arena after that. There are a few tags you can try to make it more aggressive.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Creature_token
maybe try amphibious, so it can breathe air and water. also LARGE_PREDATOR.
It wouldn't attack still, though a pigeon will attack an elephant... I'll try changing the attack and increasing the size.

-snip-
I'm not actually planning on adding giant versions of creatures, save a few, though I might add them as an addon. If so, they will definitely be terrors - unnaturally large beasts, and so dangerous fighters. I'm also going to add extinct creatures in an addon.

So, there is the base mod, then the non-actually-real addon, the giant addon (possibly) and the extinct addon.

I'm developing a new mod - Urist's Ark, adding creatures, creatures, creatures (and perhaps stone, clothes and other stuff). I would like some suggestions of what animals YOU would like to see in Dwarf Fortress.
Feel free to take some of my animal additions from OldGenesis mod.

I have Forest Elephant, Dama Gazelle, spaniel, bulldog, mastiff, swamp cat, Dodo bird, marsh owl (fictional amalgam of N owl species), Fisher marten, Zebra, Eland the cowlike antelope,
boa, python, softshell turtle (plus its large version), spearnosed bat,
haddock (super tasty fish, triple price), and probably some more that I added before master Toady added 200+ new animals.

Thanks, I'll probably use them as a base.

My giant mantis shrimp will not show up in the arena:
this part matches the filename?  --> creature_ark_ocean

try removing [AQUATIC] and [UNDERSWIM], see if it appears after removing those tags.
You have set it to weigh 1800 grams (1.8 kg), might be too small to show up in arena?
Well, it shows up now for some reason, but wouldn't fight.  :o

Maybe the modded attack has something to do with it:
