DF Community Games & Stories / Diamonddreams, the Dwarven Library! [42.03]
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:50:11 am »
My cunning plan is to create a fortress like no other - based not on fighting, but on peaceful study, writing and arts. Diamonddreams will consist of a library tower, living quarters, a tavern and a cathedral, but little else. Dwarves will be refined and intelligent, writing books and pondering philosophy. The arts will also be encouraged, with dancing and poetry.

Even the sub-class of servants and workers who mine, smith and farm will be cultured and refined.

This will not be a succession fortress, but you can be dorfed if you wish, and rename them. I will be updating from the point of view of the dwarf/ves I choose as my avatars in DF.

It is a small world with frequent minerals and 550 year history. Its name is the Land of Vision - perhaps an omen?

The Praised Knowing Scholars shall strike the earth! Or, rather, their servants Likot, As and Rigoth will. They'll probably just talk.

Dwarves:
- As Bankringed: Proficient Engraver, Adequate Miner, Novice Reader. Servant Class.
- Rigoth Entracedtowns: Proficient Engraver, Competent Musician, Competent Singer, Adequate Miner, Novice Reader. Servant Class (1st narrator.)
- Likot Tradepaddles: Adequate Miner, Adequate Brewer, Adequate Grower, Novice Reader. Servant Class.

- Ber Splashbanners: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Fluid Engineer, Novice Diagnostician, Novice Surgeon, Novice Bone Doctor, Novice Reader. Expedition Leader (2nd narrator.)
- Feb Ragdune: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Poet, Adequate Geographer, Novice Reader.
- Nomal Whipman: Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Astronomer, Adequate Optics Engineer, Novice Reader.
- Thob Steamyboat (a.k.a. LordBrassroasts, Ilul Konosibesh): Adequate Wordsmith, Adequate Writer, Adequate Chemist, Adequate Mathematician, Novice Reader. Dorfed by Lord Brassroasts.

I dunno if or when I'll finish this, but it's a fun project. Basically, the mountainhome is moved to the Stark lands using a portal found in a deep cavern, and the dwarves make peace with the Starks and swear fealty. They are lead by a minotaur who is the son of a lady minotaur who fooled the dwarves into believing she was a living goddess, a la Byed Beautyfoolish from Castlemarkets. He wears a set of artifact armour with an artifact bronze shield and greatsword, all forged from the corpse of the bronze colossus who killed his mother. He takes this as a sign of Armok's blessing.

The dwarves become integrated into Stark life to a certain extent, and they become well liked. Then, the events in the books begin. Ned Stark, despite the legendary dwarves in his guard, is captured and executed. The dwarves hold a private ceremony in which it rains blood, proving to them that Armok wants vengence. They call their banners - the forts of their civilisation - to war. They march south with the Stark army, and smash anything in their way.

So, what I want to know is - any suggestions? Any ideas for interactions, battles, characters?

DF Modding / Urist's Ark - taking suggestions before launch
« on: April 17, 2015, 05:41:46 pm »
I'm developing a new mod - Urist's Ark, adding creatures, creatures, creatures (and perhaps stone, clothes and other stuff). I would like some suggestions of what animals YOU would like to see in Dwarf Fortress.

Current Animals:
Baboon - a dangerous little beast who can kill a dwarf. They are quite territorial.
Asian Elephant - a smaller elephant.
African Elephant - the current elephant with its name changed.
Roseate Spoonbill - a large bird with a strangely shaped bill (rather like a spoon, obviously).
Domestic Pigeon - a domestic bird with gray feathers. It's clutch is smaller but their eggs are larger than chickens. Their meat is also more valuable (as well as bone and leather, as I can't find a way to make only their meat more valuable).
Scarlet Macaw - large red parrots.
Blue Macaws - extremely rare, very valuable blue parrots.
Bison - a large hairy cow-like creature. Rather like a buffalo, but you can wash your hands in it.
Blue-Footed Booby - a type of booby (*giggles*) that has blue feet. Basically, a cooler seagull.

Current Vermin:
Lemmings - little fat hamsters that live in the arctic and (don't) dive off of cliffs.
Mantis Shrimp - nasty little creatures that can spear prey with a claw. Don't let them near mutagen or radiation.
Stickleback - a fish with spines on its back and a red belly.

DF General Discussion / Huge, HUGE problem
« on: April 13, 2015, 05:50:27 pm »
One of my dwarves has claimed a Clothier's Shop, and wants YARN cloth. I DON'T HAVE ANY.

I need to find some way, through modding or DFhack, to rescue her.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How can I get dwarves to marry?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I'm back, and... wait, what?
« on: April 07, 2015, 05:30:06 pm »
Hi, I'm Illogical_McClure. You may remember me from two mods that stopped development and a stopped community fort, but don't worry, I intend to do something about them.

Now, I suddenly have a pig bone artifact sword, somehow. Is it worth going instead for a steel sword, which is of better material, but not artifact?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Original Insults
« on: December 30, 2014, 02:49:45 pm »
After realising that basically every internet insult was "Lol Fag" and "shut the f*** up r*****" I decided to raise the bar somewhat. All in a NON-HARMFUL NATURE, we will insult the person above us in an original manner, using profile picture, signature, or even nothing to base the insult upon.

HAH! You speak not, for you do not exist, and yet your visage is still as unsightly as that of a monkey! To be precise, a baboon! One which is standing on its hands and facing BACKWARDS!

General Discussion / What is your worst/best trait?
« on: December 30, 2014, 02:41:54 pm »
My worst trait is that I am lazy. I am very good at "half-assing" jobs.

My best trait is that I feel that I can see on both sides of an argument. Or my bookishness. Either one.

Nine ladies mandating,
Ten lords a-leaping up walls,
Eleven kobolds stealing,
Twelve ogres ogging.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Most Pathetic Invaders of All Time?
« on: December 02, 2014, 02:42:20 pm »
I have recently defeated my very first goblin siege!  :D

One of the gobbos, with a copper club (a modded weapon that, unknown to me, was malfunctioning), attacked a honey badger. What followed next was ridiculous. A 36 PAGE combat report, of the two "mighty powers" battling. Eventually, they were both seriously injured and unconcious, so I put them out of their misery. Two 36 page combat reports were ended by a dwarf chopping off both their heads in one sweep each of his -Steel Battle Axe-.

Mine was from Orc Fort in Masterwork. She was my shaman, like a combo of expedition leader & doctor (I think). Well, they can make mandates, so she made a mandate to not export bolas. Well, I was fine with that, as it wasn't exactly a plan of mine to do so. After a couple of seasons, she ended the mandate. Not more than 10 seconds later, she had another mandate... also prohibiting the export of bolas. Really? I didn't even HAVE any bolas. I guess she just wanted to hedge her bets in case any were made.

Not really relevant:

DF Modding / WHAT. THE. HECK.
« on: November 14, 2014, 06:43:10 pm »
So, I was happily modding, and I create a new world. To my surprise, even after genning several worlds and replacing my RAWs, unicorns and gremlins are sitting in caves, there are no dwarves, ogres (in my mod intelligent) are living in other fortresses, elves are in towns and hamlets, goblins are in forest retreats AND KOBOLDS ARE IN FORTS.

WHAT. THE. HECK. I didn't even touch most of those raws!
