I like having a tower neighbor, however I find that a lot of the worlds I make do not have any towers in them.  I usually let them run for 500 years or so and I tend to up the variability in biomes by a lot because I like a lot of small regions near one another.  I also up the levels of good and evil and high savagery.  I mod giant animals to be tameable (exotic)

Is any of this likely to be keeping me from getting necromancers?  Is there something I can do to get more towers?
Huh, that's odd. I had a 250 year worl; there was only one necromancer slab, but he and his pupils had taught over a dozen other necromancers. They were mainly from evil races, so maybe adding the evil tag to, like, elves might help

yup, kinda silly. But hey, the game is pretty much in pre-alpha (0.4, not even version 1 yet) and of all the issues, silly things and plain bugs, this is one of the least problematic ones. Unless you try to explode a tame elephant for more leather

Leather and bones, leather and bones; you can forget about the meat because dwarves can live without it.   ;D ;D

Basically leather and bones makes armour.  I have not so far run into any weapons-grade metal, only a ton of gold which attracts goblins I've heard. 

It is rather problematic because the amount of leather and bones I get has a definite affect on whether I beat the goblins that said gold supply will attract.  Once I have the gold I can hopefull buy weapons-grade metal with gold items, but that requires me to survive until the second autumn.
If you're very lucky, you'll get a gold warhammer/mace from a mood!

Urist: "How dare ye! 'Tis a turban, not a pile!"
"SILENCE!" said the turban sitting on the throne, "I am the mayor of these grand halls."
Diplomat: "You... the turban is this fortress' mayor?!"
"NO YOU FOOL, I AM WEARING IT!"
Excellent. Just excellent. I can imagine only a pair of shoes sticking out from underneath.

And then, when you try to atom-smash him for demanding copper beds, the bridge just bounces off.

One of my dogs has finally expired from her wounds.  I set the stockpile right next to the butcher's shop to accept corpses but when I tell the dwarves to butcher an animal there, they keep complaining about there not being a nearby  unrotten butcherable animal.

The dog in question is a tame animal that was unowned and died of wound sustained in a fight with troglodytes (I have the fortune/misfortune of shallow caverns). 

I really want the bones and I do not wish to play until I sorted this out because otherwise the dog will rot.
I think they will only be butchered if they are slaughtered.

Where is dwarf.txt ([SPEECH:dwarf.txt.])? Failing that, how do I change what creatures say in battle?

The folder path should be something like 'Dwarf_Fortress/data/speech'

Though to my knowledge, that speech token is only for bragging about kills.
Yeah, it's for bragging about killing the creature in question. Other in-battle speech is hard-coded.

Edit: Though there are ways to add to in-battle speech with VOCALIZATION and through interactions.
Hmm, VOCALIZATION? I'll have to check that out!

No, but they have access to easy poison. They also have frog pets that will drip.

Nice update, thanks for having lots of pictures.
S'ok - now looking at it, I realize that there are a LOT of pictures in that update.
Riveting story so far. Could I be humanised? In order of preference: Iguk, a squad Sergeant, a trainee soldier or weaponsmith if there's one available. Failing that, any lowly peasant will do.
Iguk is fine! You can be the other sword monkey.  :P

The next update will be delayed, due to another community fort I haven't posted yet and D&D shennanigans.
