DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: April 08, 2015, 06:31:14 pm »
Hunting forgotten beast is very nerve-wracking. It's like a titan that you can't see from a distance, and will probably only get to react when it's already on top of you. It's a mysterious horror in the dark. Recently some idiot dwarves moved back into this ruin; these certainly aren't the kind of guys who survive horror films. I thought I might use them as decoys.
Yeah, I had the surreal experience of there being two fortresses really nearby who had been lost, one to a hydra, one to a FB, I headed inside and was peeking around corners expecting at any moment for a web spewing rabbit made of vomit and pain to jump out and begin humping my earballs out or something... and then find myself relieved to discover that it was only a hydra in the far side of a workshop.

"Oh, it's just a multi-attacking damage sponge, whew, I can deal with this."

Apparently the FB I was looking for was in another castle, Mario.

My nerves are still rattled. I should be relieved, but it irks me that it was able to get a breath in at all. My shield use is legendary, but what if that's not enough?
I'm not sure where I first saw this but someone recently suggested that dragons won't breathe at point blank range, which is very wrong and I am glad, a point blank burst of breath is soaked by your shield and then gone.

At longer ranges it still spreads around you, very dramatic, for sure, but far more annoying if you're surrounded by flammable objects, like wooden toys, grass, animals, goblins, elves, dorfs, humans, corpses, the sky, and so forth.

EDIT: Oh, and for slaying a forgotten beast that destroyed their city ~1000 years ago, I'm just a killer. Not a brave killer, not a heroic or legendary hero, just a killer. Where the fuck is my respect?!
I think there might be an issue with the FB getting a resident tag in the fort, as I recall.

Clearly you don't watch the insanity that pours out of Rumrusher enough:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Why does finding a site with magnetite, marble, magma 15 z down, five nearby dark fortresses, and five towers showing up as neighbors make me so excited?

Neat, bit by bit pulling more of the stuff I use advfort for back out to the x menu!

8389
Very neat, this is definitely one of my favorite plugins, I stopped bothering with therapist actually once I got used to manipulator.

Having more control with the script sounds cool, though I'm not sure fully where I'd apply it much beyond just sorting labors I rarely use to the right... hmmm, actually I wonder now if it would be possible to say... have one of the toggle sorting options move the labors with the most/highest skilled dorfs to the left?

I read that in a voice like the Lumpy Space Portal Frog from Adventure Time... I don't know why.

"Yeahhhh, Ezum, I'm gonna need you to take this sword and go kill those undead outside the Depot for me, okay, that'd be great."

Was discussing this with the gf last night (she loves to talk about dem dorfs and don't even play, I know, I'm a lucky guy) and decided newborn dorfs are like marsupial offspring, blind, lacking rear legs, they simply cling on to their mothers beard and sip at the booze soaked into it until their legs develop and they can drop to the ground, run off into the bushes, and feed.

There are things you can do though, I've been having a lot of fun rerolling 17x17's with settings to give really varied elevation, 1600x1600 variation on savagery, balanced good/evil distribution, and my tweaks to keep goblin pops down. Sometimes I end up with worlds where the only survivors are necros, sometimes I catch it before they spiral and snag worlds that have three or four towers as possible neighbors at a given site.

Nice, I apparently hit the first Meyi Lilactin so hard he came back to life as a female:

(Also, I love the board software here for little things like being able to specify width, use "img width=650" instead of "img" and you get the smaller images you can click to enlarge like those two, I don't mind myself but some posters read on smaller screens or have the pages zoomed differently and it can break tables or just be hard to see at larger img sizes, I find 650 to be a good middle ground, you can do height as well but if you do both it can screw with the aspect ratio)

They probably did kill it before it hit the ground.

In adventurer mode my faster allies will often run alongside things I've sent flying, punching and hacking and kicking them while they sail through the air with all the grace of a bowling ball.

I'm... less comfortable after your description of the wool pounding btw.

Better that than some of the alternatives, last 100+ army I found had a lot of elves too... and goblins, and dorfs, and some humans... but they were undead, and thus a lot less fun.

8398
Good man, truly you are an hero.

Though I'm still uncomfortable with the use of the phrase "vigorous wool pounder"... probably due to my Scottish ancestry.

Found a couple of skirmishes taking place, bumped into one and stood still to see if they would do anything if I just ignored them:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Right off the bat we've got them shooting at each other and one of the gobs on the bottom left is yielding to the one beside them.

They just started fighting and such, then I noticed a group chasing one of the survivors from the other group so I followed them.

What happened next is... uh, hard to explain, see, after they killed that guy I noticed they kept clustering like if he was alive... the whole group... until... well:

...why did they decide to lay on his corpse and roll around in vomit?

The world may never know.

Also did some kid rescuing:

Neat touch that one of the other kids brought up the reunited family members and the Champion responds with "That's terrific!", I thought.

Course, while finding out where some of the last few missing kids were I had the rather weird exchange here:

'Ah yes, so you miss Tobul Furnacemolten, are they your cousin or something?'
"Oh, no, I don't know them."
O.o

Ooookay then.

You can of course ask about the position of your own forces, get info about possible troublemakers in the form of others vying for control, recruit hearthpersons up to a limit, and so forth.

Oh, and dragons will definitely use their breath right up in your face, I prefer when they do actually because then you shield block it before it spreads and sets everything on fire.
