DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where did my dwarf go? Bridge-a-pult
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:55:06 pm »
^Yup, I lost a set of masterful steel and an artifact battle axe because I thought I'd be smart and use single tile bridges, zombies showed up before I was fully ready for them and I ordered the civvies inside, and set the military to train at the downstairs barracks, last one in got on the bridge as it triggered...

"A masterwork of soandso has been lost!
A masterwork of soandso has been lost!
A masterwork of soandso has been lost!
A masterwork of soandso has been lost!
A masterwork of soandso has been lost!
A masterwork of soandso has been lost!

Which show?
Lost was the whole "you don't get it, we are the island" thing wasn't it?

I know what I've got to do... I've got to go back to the fortress.

(did I do that right? I never saw that awful looking show, just the memes resulting from it)

Last time I tried that with a vampire he just ran laps of his chamber fast enough to visibly lag me up, constantly.

You really don't want to know.

Why do I know this?

Worth noting that multilevel is much better nowadays and puts very little extra strain unless you're running like 10 or more levels visible on a map with tons of spires and such, not even sure how bad it would be then, I kept playable framerates for a while when I did an aboveground magma piston with a 20x18x15 block, which then traded places with a glob of magma the same dimensions and collapsed.

Hmmm... the tower sent some visitors, 4 gobs, a dwarf, and two humans, beat them back to regular death, it is now spring with no caravans and still just the first 2 migrants.

I'd hate to think a fort with a name like Catgrinds is going to do nothing but... grind kittens into food and leather.

"My name is Inigo Montoya.  You mandated a rose gold bed.  Prepare to die."
In case people thought this couldn't seriously happen...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mr. McLegendary there arrived at the fort with maxed out skills and ridiculous stats, but is only 20 and definitely not a vampire (had a few more arrive in a similar state, think I ended up with 3 McLegendary dorfs I decreed were all long-lost brothers who escaped from a particularly effective dwarf day care camp... but I initially was certain he was a vampire (til the flashing hungry/thirsty arrows showed up in quarantine) so I made him a baron when given the chance, as apology.

He actually had no item preferences so I thought he was PERFECT, best noble ever, AND he was the initial militia commander? Hell, made him his own champion because why the hell not, right?

Then... "I need a rose gold bed, not for my royal bedroom, no, I need another bed, so I can nap during meetings, and I want it to be made of a material that means it can only realistically be an artifact, because I'm Urist Mc-Armokdamn-Legendary, that's why!"

Hopefully Mr. Assassin is wearing better gear than masterful steel topped off with an artifact steel breastplate and artifact gold war hammer...

Huh, looks like reality.auditor and I finished at the same time.

Fun read, I can't help but wonder what would happen if you dug out a big above-ground block of obsidian in the floods, set up bridges around it like a magma piston, and then dug out a space the same height or 1 z level shorter than the block below it, with the usual floor+support side connection, before filling the space underneath with water, what exactly would a column of water exposed to glacial air do in that situation... crap, now I gotta try it.

Dwarves are much like pen and paper RPG players, if you want something on fire, simply placing it in their vicinity will serve.

Where do these clouds of dwarf or elf or goblin blood form?

Save the image into df_linux/data/art or what should be a similar path if you're not on linux for some reason.

Build a piston aboveground by removing everything around part of a mountain, then however far down so the dropped block ends up flush with the bridges around it!

That kind of bag is the difference between an axe-wielding maniac and a productive member of the community.

I thought those were the same thing.
I'm pretty sure they still are, but you forgot the hammer wielding maniacs, plus the miner who is overly attached to his blood encrusted pick, so you let him keep it when he joined the military.

I know two little words to fix your problem:
