DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 24, 2015, 11:13:58 pm »
I have an aging crippled cat who due to injuries years previously, is unable to stand up properly, and drags herself around. She scared off a troll not once, not twice, but three times. It kept trying to attack her, but as soon as he got close, (I'm presuming she hissed and swatted at him) he'd panic and run away.

trying to figure out why the hell arent none of my hunters sleeping in their bed..i always find one of them sleeping on the floor, i checked through them all and all of them have the "grouchy after sleeping on cold hard floor"

none of the other dorfs in my fort has this problem... i tried re assigning them to different beds, reassigning their jobs, everything. and it still persists..atleast all the way until their profession changes to something else. after that i usually loose track of them

Are your squads set to "sleep in own room at will"? If not, they will try to sleep in barracks, I believe. (Also, if they spend too much time on-duty, they will be too exhausted to go back to their rooms, and just go to sleep wherever they are.)

Enemy had came and laid siege on my fort, but they are composed entirely of marksdwarves. Whom am I fighting here exactly?

Assuming an unmodded game, if the message was, in fact "The enemy have come and laid siege to your fort!", they are probably bandits.

Alternately, if the message had been "A vile force of darkness has arrived!" then they would be dwarfs that had been kidknapped and raised by goblins, and so were part of the goblin civ. (Yes, there are occasionally "goblin" sieges that don't contain any goblins.)

DF Modding / Re: Modded Entities, Good & Evil Biomes

Did you test it and find out that it's creature tags? What I mean is that I moved the [USE_GOOD_ANIMALS] [USE_GOOD_PLANTS] [USE_GOOD_WOOD] tags from the elf entity to the human entity and found humans in a good biome.
Yeah, I misread at first, which is why I edited my post -- but didn't edit it quickly enough, apparently :). your second post crossed with my edit.

Are you sure having good/evil materials available doesn't automatically let them settle there? I don't see any tags that look like they could do that in particular. I might need to experiment a little.

Edit: I moved the good material tags from the elves to the humans, and the humans settled all over a good region on the map. It's probably that.

Thanks for the help! :).

DF Modding / Modded Entities, Good & Evil Biomes

Sorry, was unable to find this by searching:

what determines whether a custom modded entity will settle in good/evil biomes in addition to / instead of neutral ones? (I mean actually settle there, not just have access to animals/plants/wood)

It doesn't matter what construction you make. The tile has been exposed to the open sky at some point, so the game will always consider it to be outside from now on. The only way to secure a ice-free well is to build a second, underground one, or pump magma all the way up from the magma sea to a reservoir 2 z-levels below the well you have now, with the magma-heated water stored on the level above that.

On the bright side, if you do build a magma pump stack, that's most of the work for a magma cannon done. Just make sure to power that stack with windmills or something instead of actual dwarves - it would take the entire workforce and the pathing lag would be fairly ridiculous.

Yes, but the second tile has NEVER been exposed to sky. It was still underground when I built a roof over the well; I didn't think that chaneling the dirt out from above it AFTER I built the roof would cause it to freeze. (Also note that I'm not the one that built the original well)

Also the save was still in CLA, so I took the liberty of converting it back to ASCII for the next turn's immediate convenience.

ASCII version

Oops, sorry about that (I had the nagging feeling that I was forgetting something...) thanks for fixing it :)

Oh yeah, there was one other thing I wanted to mention -- I set up glass furnaces and was trying to get pipes and corkscrews made for a magma furnace, but it didn't get very far. (First, I kept running out of charcoal, then it got kind of pushed to the background as I scrambled to finish other things up.) Actually, I'm not sure if the glass furnaces are still there; they might have gotten lost in some of the reshuffling.

(Oh, I also expanded agriculture a bit. Forgot to do images of those.)

1st Granite, Year 54

So, my year as overseer is complete. It's all someone else's problem now.

Soap: We have soap! I finally got the lyemaker to make some lye, and thus soap was finally made.

Well: We have no well, because the ice beneath the one built by the previous overseer didn't thaw out all summer long. I tried to build a new one one space over, since there was liquid water that was still underground and now there was a roof over the spot where the new well would be, but as soon as I canneled away the earth above it, the liquid water froze:

The summer human caravan freaked out and left when they saw the remnants of our "goblin" "seige", (and the other dwarves weren't to keen on seeing all the bodies either), so I created a separate refuse pile for sapients, and walled it off:

General Notes, before posting my final entry:
  • "Lord Brassroast" Abanestun is a legendary mechanic
  • Sorry for the slowdown at the end -- real life got a lot more demanding, and I sort of lost steam.
  • We've still got a bunch of adamantium burning a hole in our pocket.
  • Spring has arrived, so I'm working on my final post now. It should be up shortly.

Well... there goes that one. Apparently I'm just as cursed as RedMageCole.

It could be because of the infamous military dodging through walls glitch... in that case, the barracks area has to be downsized to not go near the tower's edge, or the walls reinforced by double layer walls.

Aw well, what a shame. :'(
Yeah, I really liked what you were doing with the character, and hated having that storyline cut short :(.

I finally found another witness who was able to tell me what happened:

...really not sure what to believe here. I'll just be glad to finish up my final month on the job, write up my final report, and pass the buck torch to someone else.

OOC: I seriously have no idea what happened. I got the alert message, and this is the best I've been able to puzzle out.

Hey, sorry for my absence -- Real Life(TM) ensued.

Planning on getting the final update with LordBrassroast's dorfing,  up sometime late tonight, along with the save file.

Did Captain Awesome get any kills, or did he not participate in the battle?
Nobody who was dorfed participated -- you were all sparring, and the battle ended while you were still en route from the sparring area to the battle. (Calling it a 'battle' is an overstatement, really. More like 'intruders were discovered and eliminated'. I don't think there were even any injuries on our side.)
