Do you actually wield a weapon ?
The new version lets you put your weapon away to climb. Press 'q' to wield it again.

A volcano eruption ... next to a goblin site  :). The question is, is this a new feature, or a worldgen bug ?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Military doesn't want to equip armor
« on: December 07, 2015, 04:07:41 pm »
It is actually the "replace clothing" option, that doesn't work. They pick up shield, weapon, chainmail, leather armour and trousers, but refuse to wear helmets , boots and gloves, and never drop anything.

I also built coffers in the baracks, for the case they need a place to store their clothes (what some people demand), but it doens't help either.

Maybe, they will wear equipment, if their caps, shoes and gloves rot away.

Curses / Re: Game has problems saving
« on: December 05, 2015, 09:54:02 am »
Some tips, and information to check :
* What version and operation system, do you use, and are there any mods ?
* Does a file named SAVE.DAT exist in the directory of the executable ? Or maybe, is there another file, that seems to be a safegame.
* Is it write protected, has zero size or has other problems ?
* Do you have enough disk space, and write acess on the partition ? (Is it a CD-ROM, Floppy Disk, Network drive, or is your user account restricted)
* Did you properly install it ? Did you properly extract the files from the ZIP file, or just run the executable from the ZIP file ? (Normally, this shouldn't work at all, but maybe some drives allow read acess to the packed art files)
* If you have a Anti-Virus, check its log. Is there anything suspicious. (F.e. Did it mistake LCS for malware, or did some actual malware (Crypto-Ransomware) damage files)
* What do you mean with clicking the X Key?
** If you pressed X in the Safehouse-menu, you properly quitted and the game should be saved.
** If you clicked it instead, nothing should have happened (there is no mouse support)
** If you clicked the cross on Windows windows (assuming you are not using fullscreen), you killed the process. This means, you didn't safe this in-game day, but normally the game is autosaved everytime, you wait a day. Maybe, you have a version without autosave ?  If this is the case, you should get a version with autosave, as this also helps with crashes.

The Tree-Bug seems to be fixed, well done.  :)

There are however some minor bugs (aside from world gen crashes):
* In Fortress mode, Dwarves seem not to be able to use a ramp submerged in water. A dwarf dropped into water, while I penetrated an aquifer, and he got stuck until I pumped the water out (while reaching competend swimming skill). Using ramps in Adventure mode, however works.
* Wordgen can place sites on volcanoes. (This might be an older bug)
* In Adventure mode, drinking water coverings does not work.

From a more intuitive point of view, you are right, but if you look at the values, dark white makes more sense.

The bits in 4bit (=16colour) mode are:
Bit 0 (=1): blue
Bit 1 (=2): green
Bit 2 (=4): red
Bit 3 (=8): extra brightness

So, the first 8 colours are "dark" colours and the last 8 colours are "bright" colours, each in the order : black, blue, green, cyan, red, violet, yellow/brown, white. Colour 7 has the first 3 bits set to "white" (all 1), and the last bit set to "dark", so it is technically dark white, and not bright grey, and colour 8 is bright black instead of dark grey.

Explicit music (don't know why you singled out hip hop) is banned for underage people. It's called a parental advisory. That means that the parent is the point of failure, not the music or the musician or the record company or the government.
I didn't mean, that Beat-Music, Grunge... causes islamism, but all these things were pop-culture, that was once cool because it caused a scare amongst the public, and now children consider islamism cool, because it causes a scare too (thought this time, the scare is justififed).

With Hiphop, the problem is less the music itself, it is more the Hiphop subculture, and the organized crime associated with it. The mantra of hiphop is, "If you are part of a minority, your only option is, to become a gang-meber, Islamist, Christian fundamentalist,...". There are many concerned parents (or Metalheads) that want to ban baggy clothes or hooded sweaters on schools, to prevent crime.

I'd say, remove those kids from their parental care, let Child Protective Services find a deprogramming program suitable for kids, and have the parents of those kids investigated by intelligence services.
I don't think many of their parents are islamists. Islamism is the new Beat-Music (or Grunge, Slipknot, First person shooters, MTV ...), and children - especially those from westernized households - pick the stuff up from Facebook and the like. A strict ban on cellphones, similar devices and internet usage (and Hiphop) for the underage, would solve this problem, and many more, like "cyber-bulliing", "happy-slapping", "cyber-slacking" and their general lack of movement. When I was a child, we didn't have cellphones, and the world was so much better back then.

Another thing, is this hysteric empathy that modern teachers display in religious education and in "special" dicussions after "tragic" events like the attacks on the World-Trade-Center or school shootings. For pupils, it is just fun, to troll the teacher by things like that. It is always fun - and strictly accurate - to remind them on the starving children in Africa, or traffic accidents. For teachers, and the media, a million deaths is a statistic and one death is a tragedy.

By the way: Look for the buzzword "je suis chien": 129 dead humans are a statistic and one dead dog is a tragedy.

Come on, the only thing more dishonourable than chemical weapons are nonlethal chemical weapons. If you really want to do that, you can get deadly - read: more honourable - chemical weapons, by using the exhaust from car engines, or passivly (it won't burn on its own) burning PVC from cables or tubes ... or records from the Eagles of Deathmetal.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Trapped in fortress by titan; trees everywhere
« on: November 16, 2015, 02:13:26 pm »
What is the Titan made of ? If it is flesh, wooden spikes should do well. Otherwise, there are exploits to get sand. Cavern mud or magma-flow may turn into sand, if you build a construction over it and remove it.
EDIT: Oh, sorry, the Titan is already gone. It works against goblins or the next Titan too.

Comparing GNP with religion is problematic, because it is comparing peoples and not people. Inside a given people, the typical situation is ususally, that atheists are more left-wing and christians or other religions are more right-wing. If you compare german countries, you see, that southern "redneck" countries (Bayern) are wealthy and faithfull, while east german countries (Brandenburg) or megacities (Bremen) are poor and mostly atheist, and the western countries (Rheinland-Pfalz) are inbetween.

It is also interesting, if you look at the biographies of international terrorists. Many, of them are cosmopolitans, who travel the world or study abroad. Al Quaida terrorists like Mohammed Atta or Osama bin Laden were Arab cosmopolitans who lived in may different countries, and had good relationships to the USA - bin Laden was even trained in an american terror-camp. They were exactly that kind of persons, that the economist want as immigrants. The dangerous cosmopolitan islamism from Al Quaida comes from Arabia, while justified local islamism from Hisbolla comes from people in Libanon or Palestine, who just defend themselves against Israel.

Amusingly, there are also rumours, that bin Laden had a large stockpile of american porn ... and the CIA confiscated it for themselves.

* the variable mod is computed : attack+bonus-defense-healthroll. If it is below 0, it is set to 0. Melee attacks give a bonus from strength here.

Health is reducing the attack roll, too. The difference between health and armour is, that health always reduces positive attack rolls, but never below zero, while armour can reduce the roll below zero, but is reduced by armour penetration, and covers only some bodyparts.

In first person shooters, hitpoints are often called health, but in LCS health is more like constitution in roguelikes. There is however a chance, that health is reduced permanently, by special wounds (even if they are healed), geting beaten up during interrogation, and by aging.

If the coming of head chopping ultra orthodox guys, who consider middle class syrian as westernized devil is inevitable, why middle class syrians should not try to save own lifes, uh?

Why do you assume, the westernized middle class were secular ? Religious fundamentalism is a movement of wealthy westerners. Poor people can't afford to believe in god, and religious fundamentalism is a western value. The driving forces of secularism are the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China, both eastern countries, while the USA and it's First Amendment is the breeding ground of Adventists, Babtists, Mormons, Jehovas Witness, Scientology, Ku Klux Klan, Pro Life, Zionists, Twelve Tribes, YMCA and other scum. Also, smartphones play an important roll for the proliferation of christian fundamentalism. It is also interesting, that the USA is killing secular leaders like Hussein or Gadafi (and in the future possible Assad) and installing islasmist theocracies, who in the long run byte the USA in the butt. For the case, you don't know, Hussein had nothing to do the Al Quaida, he just wanted to trade oil in Euro instead of Dollar, and got invaded for that. The economical crisis of the EU is the fault of Bush, so no wonder that everybody hates Amecricans. It were western counties, like USA, Britain, Spain and France, who wrecked the Orient to havoc, so why should Germany pay the bill for the mess, that the west caused ?

Short answer : pecentual reduction (or exponential reduction depending on skill)

Long anwser :
First, you must know, how skill rolls work. First, a raw value is computed:
* stat roll : the stat
* skill roll : take half the asociated stat, cap it at skill+3, then add the skill.

Now, you get a 6 sided dice for every three points, and for the remainder a 3 sided or 5 sided dice. All theese dices are wolled, and the 3 best roll are added to a number between 1 and 18

There is further another roll, the damage roll, this is a flat number plus a random number, both defined in the XML of the weapon.

Now, how it works :
* Make the attack roll, of the weapon skill, and the defense roll of the dodge skill
* reduce them if the user is badly wounded or crippled
* get the flat to-hit bonus of the weapon
* if attack+bonus > defense, the shot hits, get the damage of the weapon
* The bodypart is computed. Depending on attack-defense, the probability is affected. Backstabbing gives a bonus here
* For full-automatic weapon, each shot further gets a to-hit penalty. When multiple shots hit, the damage is stacked. If it hits multiple times, a crtitical hit bonus may be aplied. Backstabbing gives 100 bonus here.
* the variable mod is computed : attack+bonus-defense-healthroll. If it is below 0, it is set to 0. Melee attacks give a bonus from strength here.
* Now, the function damagemod is called with mod and damage
** The armour value is computed this depends on armour-type and bodypart. (Police bodyarmour, for example 7 for mody, 0 for other bodyparts)
** The quality of the armour is subracted from it, and if it is damaged, it is further reduced by 1
** if armour is below 0 it is now set to 0
** The variable mod2 id computed by : armour+random(armour+1)-armour_penetration
** If this is above 0, it is subtracted twice from mod (armour_penetration is effective against good armour but doesn't further increase damage)
** mod can now be negative or positive depending on armour and roll
** mod is capped between -8 and +10
** If mod is positive, damage is increased by 20% for each point of mod
** If mod is negative, damage is cut a half for each point of mod

** If the damage is fire damage, and the defender wears bunker gear, the damage is quartered
* If the car in a chase is hit damage is reduced to 0
* The wound is set on the target (this may or may not cause bleeding)
* If the damage is above a certain value, the bodypart is blowen off
* If the damage hits a limb, it is reduced to a nonlethal amount (the limb may still be gone).
* Now, the damage is subtracted from the defenders hitpoints
* If the damage is high, has a certain damage type, there is a random chance, that a special wound (loosing an eye, or rupturing the spleen...) is set. Then, the  hitpoints are set to a maximum value for that wound

Everybody has 100 hitpoints. If somebody has bleeding wounds, the hitpoints are further reduced, by 1 point per bleeding bodypart, and an amount for special wounds.

Tanks get a special handling. They get 15 armour for every bodypart (10 if the damage is fire), and do 5000+random(5000) damage. Some monsters get special attacks, that are persistant, so evern if a recruited Flaming Rabbit becomes a Genetic Monster, it keeps its fire attack.
